Can it capture plugins?! | Using the GE250 to Tone Capture Neural DSP Fortin Nameless 2.0

Heya! I was asked recently if it was possible to use the Mooer GE250 to tone capture a guitar plugin. I thought, there's probably no way to do this... but wanted to give it a try anyways. So here is my attempt at capturing the tone of the Fortin Nameless 2.0 guitar plugin from Neural DSP. I was surprised! I thought it sounded pretty close, and was really impressed! It didn't come without some challenges, but I think with some more time and effort, I could probably match it almost perfectly!

Great video! I just did the same this weekend with 410HJS Marshall Amp but with the GE300. In the GE300, the power amp section is in the amp block and not the cabinet block, so it seems to capture the entire amp. You do have to pick something very close as your target amp and I found using the Distinct mode vs. Original mode on the GE amp helped. And then modified the eq of the amp block to really dial it in. Came incredibly close to the actual amp. Would be interesting to see what gets you closer, the tone capture from the GE250 vs. the new Mooer technology on the GE Labs that you can then load into the amp block of the GE 250. That would be a great comparison since the GE Lab was supposedly designed specifically to do that and to capture through an audio interface. Just playing around, it seems like tones i downloaded from Mooer Studio were better with the .GIN and .GNR files from GE Lab than they were from ones I downloaded that were from GE tone capture profiles with the .mo files. Just a thought for a shootout......Mooer vs. Mooer tone capture since the GE Lab capture is supposed to be their latest and greatest for creating profiles :-). Have an awesome week!

i literally just commented if you was able to capture a floor unit on one of the other videos haha! crazy?! only thing id say is by the looks of it the ge250 is able to load 10 IR's, if people are saying the tones dont match the big reason why would more than likely be the Impulses! so for example if you use plugins with an exteranal IR loader like the GGD Cali Oversized where you can export your own IR files you could essentially capture your ampsim and load the IR you made. either way i will absolutely be investing into the GE250 as it looks like ths the most well build unit that captures without the hefty price tag!

That tone capture is pretty underwhelming but as you said it's trying something unorthodox. Is it possible to disable the cab on the GE250 and then do a full capture of the Neural plugin with the stock cabs in the plugin?

Yeah, I think it got closer at the end of the video... just need to figure out the weord compression thing. You totally could, but I was trying to simplify the process... if I could nail the preamp, I might try the whole thing next. I'll probably attempt it with the GELabs again

What would be interesting is if you're using the Howard Benson or Will Putney plugin and you're trying to capture amp blends. You could use the Seacows Meshall IR and probably have some interesting results

Interesting idea. Some eq to polish off the sound on the Mooer might help. Maybe as you say, picking a different amp on the Mooer. Keep plugging away at it. Wonder if anyone’s tried this with a Kemper. I think the Kemper has a different capture method completely though. Who knows though, maybe you find the perfect amp sounds out of a hybrid capture. 🤘🏻

Totally! I was pretty surprised with the result. I think with some time I could get it even closer... and I love this amp sim, so it would be rad to have it on a floor modeler with fx and whatnot

Interesting! I have been curious whether or not I can capture the sound of a fuzz pedal + amplifier with the GE250, since I don't want to shell out the extra cash for the GE300 just for the pedal capture mode. I guess this kind of answers the question! Thank you!

The compression/mushy sound might be you have too many Digital (A/D to D/A) conversion going ON...Does the GE250 have SP/DIF to cut down the Digital conversion...??? If your computer has SP/DIF output or a USB interface with SP/DIF into the GE250 it should sound better...?? I know you can profile a plug in if you have a Kemper though..??

Maybe try it WITH the natural cab? I can tell you from experience that the Kemper does its best when you capture all of it. I did this with this same plug in and got great results. The Kemper is weak when run into impulses outside of it though. I'm currently building a clone of this amp can't wait to be done with it.

@@TaylorDanley worth the experiment I guess. Know what Kemper does is model the gain staging, sag, clarity, etc of the Amp and then creates an impulse. I think this unit is doing more of an eq match. So maybe the eq match would be better with the impulse imo (more accurate) plus the neural cab sounds really good.

Maybe putting a reamp box between the apollo and the return on the Preamp Live would give a better result.

Taylor, do you ever use amp sims to practice? If so, do you run the amp out of monitors, real amps or an FRFR? I can only get a good sound on headphones and I have spent a fortune trying to get a sound that matches the one on my headphones.

No, my practice/live rig is an axefx3 and seymour Duncan powerstage 700. You can probably run an amp sim, but then youd need a computer and interface... which is inconvenient. And you can run it through either PA (frfr) or a real amp. Just turn the cab section off if you're using a real amp.

Maybe you can try turn off IR in ge250 and then capture DSP amp +IR , and compare with this vdo .... By the way it's like a tongue twister to say lol

Interesting experiment. Definitely a usable tone, even if the grind pedal seems kinda no existent in the tone capture. Would be interesting to hear the captured tone back to back from the Mooer amp you chose as the closest sound. Then, see if you can match it be EQing the mooer amp.

ge300 is a big step up. It has a ton of extra controls for the amps/cabs. It also has some synthesizer tech in it, if that's your thing.

Tone capture sounds a bit lifeless. Please explore GE labs and those gir and ngr files. This is good alternative to tone capture.

Bias Amp 2 has a Match Tone feature, you can capture by either a real amp, or a 20 second .wav guitar audio file.
