World Map in Japan is actually different from the one I used. (Japan is in the centre). But I couldn't find a Japanese one with the right license.

iceberg789 get outta here boii , that is not normal. You order your map according to the time-zones. So you start with the first time-zone to the right and the last to the left. Or west-east as the sun goes. Who places themselves in the middle of a world map? That's stupid ass shit. Gawd damn.
@xenotypos

No, most countries put a map that doesn't cut continents. America is either in the right (like in most Japanese maps), or in the left (like in European maps). I'm satisfied with the "eurocentric" maps, since Europeans are the ones who created those maps the way they are today. In Chinese traditionnal cartography for example (I said traditional, not what is used since the 17th century over there), the south and the north are inversed, which is interesting actually, but I'm diverging.

Curiously enough, they know about the capital city Vienna (and then think it's the country's name). Whenever i say i'm from Austria, they laugh and say "oh! From australia with the kangaroos!" >_>

Not really.. can't actually tell him stupid or not, maybe he's really bad at geography. He might be confused because of the weird map, he knew it's China but couldn't find India, it's already the most left of the map, death end. The highschool girl in the other hand, may be really good at geography, but she's still in school, and they're still teaching these stuff, as when we get older, we mostly forget those we don't really care about xD

World maps in Japan look different from the one I used because we put Japan in the centre. I looked for a blank Japanese map with the right licence but I couldn't find one, so I had to use the US map. It was hard because it has to be blank, coloured, and with borders. "Regular world map" That's only the regular map for certain people. In Japan, maps with Japan in the center are more popular. Here in America, it isn't universal, but I often see world maps with America in the middle.

The maps I've seen always have America to the far left side around the middle, such that hawaii and alaska are at the very edge of the map. Of course, I hardly ever look at maps and maybe they've changed them in the last 16 or so years since I looked at a world map. I've only had to look at the map of the US with any frequency, since I've never left the country.

And it makes much more sense to cut in the middle of gigantic Pacific ocean since there's nothing there anyway and it's just a HUGE piece of water

I'm an african and I can tell where are all countries in Africa with maybe 2 errors, so Nigeria is not big deal but for the rest of the world beside the one who took classes in Geography, put a name on African's countries is hard.. Sad to Know that :( (especially when you know that Africa has a lot of strategic resources). it's really show that we must do much effort to promote our countries and make sure that not only wars, starvation, can be display in medias. Hoppefully one day we could overcome all this.

Really easy to memorise North African countries but those tiny from West Africa are a mess. To memorise something you really should know the context, I had a problem with the Balkan States (Montenegro, Bosnia etc) until I've learned the history of the region. And the post-colonial history of countries in Equatorial Africa and West Africa is not really widely known, before the colonial period all states also had different names (except for Mali Empire) and borders.

Merry Mutima I'm in Europe and I only remember learning to place the countries in Europe and in South America, so I'm only half ok with those two continents and North America, because of common sense and because there aren't many counteies there. It's kind of sad! I feel ashamed that I know so little about placing African countries, I think I'll self study and learn them.

just "discovered" this channel for myself today and i have to say i love it, i was always fascinated about japan, the culture and the people and with this channel i can hvae i little insight of this, really love your interviews, also subscribed to your email japanese course and the first video i got send was awesome, for the first time i feel like i could be able to learn at least a bit about the language which always seem to be so abstract and complicated to learn by yourself, i wrote anything in a textbook as detailed as possible so i can look at stuff when im not sure about them anymore. I dream of visiting japan and from what i hear/read/watched you really should be able to understand at least basic japanese so thats a motivation for me too. i just have to balance it with school caus there i have to learn german (my native language), English and since 2 years spanish aswell. English was easy for me, i learned it with 0 effort but spanish is impossible no matter how hard i try so i hope i can learn japanese without neglecting spanish the difference is, i want to learn japanese but im not interested in learning spanish at all, the language just isnt for me idk how to desrcibe it (sorry for the long unneccesary text but i just had to express whats in my mind) if anyone reads this i hope you have an awesome day

Yes, knowing African or some Asian and Central American countries is quite hard. E.g. Kyrgyzstan or Laos - I mean, I would know where they are less or more but I won't be sure which one EXACTLY. In Europe Balkans is the hardest part to distinguish different countries imo. But generally, Europe is quite easy (at least for me, that could be Eurocentric statement) and South America too. Asia is a big continent so it depends on the region. The biggest countries of North America are also very easy to recognize.

If not, could you make one on this topic? I hear points where they say the English equivalent of a word (i.e. blue-ブルー, pink-ピンク), but there are also times I hear things like 緑 or 黄色. What's the reason for this?

So many people flipping out because of the non-standard map layout. It could have been upside down and backwards and anyone with half a brain could have easily adapted and started locating things again. It's like spinning a globe and stopping it at a random point, no biggie.

The issue isn't the size of the map overall nor where it's centered, yet the main issue I have is that the countries are not proportionate to their actual size as well as the borders theselves being quite off due toward said improper sizes. It really threw me off, and I'm the kind of asshat who knows exactly where Kuwait, Turkey & Jordan or the French Polynesian or Starbuck & McDonald Islands' are.

As someone who knows about practically every country and can locate pretty much every country in the world with absolute ease (just sometimes confusing Benin and Togo with each other, as well as Niue, Nauru, and Kiribati (pronounced "Kiribas", by the way, and named after "Gilbert")...), I think it's sad that so many people (in all countries) don't care. But I very much appreciate those who do care. People who don't care about maps also don't know what's happening to the environment. Hint...it's mostly getting worse and worse, and forests and coral reefs are disappearing before our eyes...well, before the eyes of people who are interested in seeing, at least. (By the way, did you not know Venezuela, when the schoolgirl got it? I think the other schoolgirl said that "It's not the yellow one", but it was.)

I live in Canada. In high school, my teacher made us take a test every two weeks where we took a blank continent map and placed all the country names we could remember in the right places. I scored extremely well, had an almost perfect score for Asia(which included the middle east) and Africa. And most people had high scores. I forgot a lot but I mostly remember countries where my friends are from and countries surrounding them. Then I can remember most European countries because I study European history in college rn.

Of course, Nepal is a famous Asian country it borders India from the south,east and west and the Tibetan plateau (China) north. It looks like a horizontal french fry and it shares the Himalayas along with Bhutan and China. They also are famous for their long traditions of fighting and their Gurkhas the national soldiers who made a name for themselves in the British empire's army. Correct me if something's wrong, I didn't check Wikipedia ;-;

Pretty random but I'm interested in japanese culture and school system and thought of going there as an exchange student on 2nd of High school (I'm on 9th grade on middle school) but I have problems learning the writing, especially kanji and hiragana. I barely know 5 kanjis and hiraganas and a couple of hiraganas. The only word I can write from memory is 'Kira kira'. I'm weirdly fluent in English (my first language is Finnish) and I'm learning russian and swedish at school as well. Everyone says I'm good at languages but it's really hard, honestly. Any tips learning to read so I can start the talking side as well? ;-; I really want to learn reading at first. The pronouncation is so similar to finnish that it's not something I get bothered about.

I don't even know how some people got to the knowledge that Bulgaria is in Europe. The image that they have of it and some others is so African.

You inspired me to take a geography quiz. I found one similar to this at www.sporcle.com/games/teedslaststand/find-world-countries. It's good because it has random order and makes it very clear what you're clicking on, but it's bad because it mixes up the map with lots of insets. I got 187/197 in 16 min. 44 sec. the first time, a perfect score in 11 min. 50 sec. the second time, and 196/197 in 10 min. 5 sec the third time (I think I misread one). Yes that included Nigeria the first time. Nigeria is a major world country (7th most populous), and I've met many Nigerians in Texas.
