Having been abroad can be an explanation but that's not always it. We're all wired differently and some folks who are born with musical abilities or some who are neurodivergent have an easier time mimicking most of the sounds they hear. Just having access to audio materials (like songs) is enough in those cases. Speaking from experience.

I have several fellow language industry professionals who publicly identify as neurodivergent, just like me. We sometimes discuss this and our shared experiences reflect this just as much as those we hear from others who also claim neurodiversity. However, observing the occurrence of something within a given group regardless of age, ethno-racial background and professional background, isn't in itself enough to provide answers as to why said thing keeps happening. One thing cute about "kitto katto" is that in Japanese, "kitto" means "definitely", and "katto" sounds like "to win". So it's common in Japan to give KitKats to someone who is studying for tests or about to do a competition so that they'll "definitely win"!

I don't know about other countries, but in Japan, there is a considerable trend of ridiculing those who have accurate English pronunciation. Especially in schools, there is a tendency to make fun of students who try to speak English with a native-like pronunciation. They also feel embarrassed about it. I know someone who entered junior high school and worked hard to develop a native-like English pronunciation in their first English class, but they were made fun of for a whole year. In this video, the two people being interviewed might have been able to pronounce the words better if they were interviewed separately. It's because they might have been self-conscious and embarrassed about their non-native pronunciation, as they are aware of being observed, and they have a sense of shame regarding English pronunciation. (Please excuse my poor English.)

However, the Japanese tendency to be conscious of being observed and the prevalent trend of ridiculing those who speak English properly to some extent hinder us Japanese from achieving correct English pronunciation. If there weren't such characteristics and trends, I think we Japanese would be able to speak English more confidently and fluently than we do now.

Years ago I worked at a Japanese company in the U.S. and communicated with engineers in Japan frequently. They loved faxes and we always communicated that way. There was a complicated engineering/manufacturing problem and their fax had the word “leray” several times in the communication. Although they wrote in English (Janglish) we had no idea what a “leray” was. We gave the fax to Japanese engineers at our facility and they also wondered what “leray” was. After more consultations we found out “leray” was “relay”😄.

@@michaelverbakel7632 there is no "letter L" in Japanese, in either Katakana, or Hiragana, the the closest replacements are the letters Ra, Re, Ri, Ro, and Ru, hence: retteru (letter), miruku (milk). Similar case with people who speak Russian, the letter 'W' and sound 'TH' does not exist in Russian, so in a strong, perhaps just leaning English speaker's Russian accent, 'W', becomes 'V', and "TH" becomes 'S' because it's the closest achievable replacement.

It goes even deeper than that. The prononciation of words also affect the deeper meaning you associate with it (like whether the prononciation is harsh or smooth). And your view of the world is completely structured by the vocabulary of your language as well. It’s not that Japanese People can’t Pronounce McDonalds. It’s that Japanese People are used to Pronouncing it a certain way because of Gairaigo (converting Foreign words to be adopted into the Japanese Language.) So McDonalds would be Makudonarudo (マクドナルド), Kit Kat = Kitto Katto (キトカト), Hamburger = Hanbāgā (ハンバーガーが), Coffee = Kōhī (コーヒー), etc…. It’s kind of like the “correct” way of pronouncing “Karate”. There is the correct Japanese pronunciation of it, and there is the way English Speakers pronounces it. Karate has already been long adopted into the English Lexicon, so an English Speaker pronouncing Karate in a non-Japanese way is not necessarily pronouncing it “incorrectly” either.

6 years ago, when I moved to Japan, my parents made me study in Japan, and I was very excited at first . I was in high school. There were students who always called me 'Oi English girl' and 'foreigner'😂. Because I lived in Australia, I have a great accent, my Japanese wasn't that good, so I spoke English most of the time, but very few people in my class knew English, also their pronunciation was so confusing. No one would talk to me if there was a group activity and they were too anxious to talk to me. I don't have any friends because of the communication gap and all. Once my teacher asked me to read a poem and I read it normally but all the students and even my teacher looked at me like they had seen an alien. everyone made fun of me. Everyone thought I was arrogant because I spoke English, so no one dared to be friends with me.😬 and now i used to be alone 😑

The fact that they're pronouncing differently has little to do with whether the word is adopted into the Japanese language or not. Even if you show a Japanese person an English word that isn't used in Japanese at all, they would still most likely pronounce it according to the Japanese phonetic system. The same goes for English speakers. If shown an unfamiliar Japanese word, they would pronounce differently according to their accent. I think the reason Japanese is especially singled out on this is that there are no single consonants (except one), so the pronouncication changes more than most languages? I obviously don't actually know if that's the case, but it seems most likely

I don’t doubt the initial confusion was partially caused by them being racist (hence me having to unlearn subconsciously racist behavior and filling me with the fear of accidentally being racist without knowing, making me question what is right to say and what would be wrong) and partially because in Dutch some English words aren’t pronounced differently, like for example KFC. Some Dutch people will still Dutchify it, but it’ll sound off then, especially for some brands like KFC. Edit: I wasn’t sure if I was clear on the racism part, but for clarification I meant that I worry I will unintentionally mock the way they speak or am appropriating them by pronouncing the English words like they do. That’s what I thought before I knew that Japanese people translate English words into their own language.

One think to take note about Japanese. Their syllabary consists of two possible patterns with one exception. Namely, they can have a vowel, or they can have a consonant followed by a vowel. The only exception is ン which only appears at the end of some words. The consequence of their syllabary is that virtually every word ends in a vowel sound. So when using a loan word, they almost invariably add a trailing vowel to it. So listen to this video and see how they pronounce words that end in a consonant such as McDonald, Kit-Kat, etc. Most of them added a trailing "o" sound.

Part of it is that the Japanese writing systems always include a vowel except for the n sound. So for example hot dog becomes ホットドッグ (hotto doggu) because you can't just have t or g without a vowel. You can sometimes kinda omit a vowel sound, but it's still there in writing

It is okay to pronunce english word like japanese if you speak with japanese. (even with stranger , we will probably understand ) You should know that it's the same in french , we adapt the pronunciation of these english word to the french one , and i bet it's a common practice everywhere . Even english speaker use it a lot , they are a lot of french word who aren't used propely and it's okay . In a way the word change a bit to be incorporated , like chinese word have change to be incorporated in the japanese language .

Many foreigners asking if the pronunciation is exaggerated? Since when foreigners know how to pronounce Japanese correctly? (Non Japanese speakers) The words are not exaggerated but in full pronunciation, normally Japanese people short most of these words. Asian Boss instead of making fun of the Japanese people should point how helpful Japan tries to pronounce some foreign words in their original form. Also the usage of the katakana for these foreign words is also very helpful.

grammatically, it’s cause Japanese, like some other languages, doesn’t allow consonant clusters, so any time they borrow a word from a language that do have consonant clusters, the rules of the language means they have to break up the consonant clusters with vowels for it to be grammatically correct ^-^

Yeah I find loan words a fascinating part of language exchange. You need to learn to say stuff the Japanese way for it to be right. The same way pronouncing Paris “correctly” in English isn’t actually correct. Loan words aren’t quite the same words as where they came from.

I find it super interesting in some cases especially - “Salsa” is a loan word from Spanish, but in English it doesn’t mean the same thing. Salsa just means sauce in Spanish, but in English is means…well, Salsa. Similar with “Sake” being a specific type of alcohol in English but just alcohol in general for Japanese
