Couple of thoughts -- Get a ball of yarn and cut a boat load of 6 inch long pieces. Use your painters tape and tape a bunch of the pieces of yarn across the top of the windshield. Then tape a bunch of them across the roof bar of the cage and on every bar of the cage behind the engine. Once you're done, take KaterTot out for some steady state runs (30, 60, 90 mph) with a second car outfitted with a GoPro or two filming what the yarn strands are doing. Add/delete cardboard panels and repeat. You should have a good feel for the aero and duct work you need for the intercooler and cabin after a couple of hours of work. #KaterTotRules

I would put a stock roof on it and build up the scoop above the roof all the way forward to the top of the windshield. It needs a bit of an arch because the air will be moving up along the windshield, so you're trying to scoop it from headed upwards and direct it back down into the intercooler. Think pro-stock hood scoop, only the full width of the roof. You don't need a big opening: a good rule of thumb is half of the total area of your heat exchanger. Your end fairings aren't doing very much as you can probably tell - the air isn't laminar around the side of the car without windows anyway (probably wouldn't be with) and won't be much better once you put the firewall in. I would re-evaluate what's going on behind the firewall/intercooler with streamers once you've done all of that. Once you've sealed off the IC inlet and added the firewall, you might find the air is at such a low pressure back there you might REALLY be pulling air through your intercooler, but maybe ducting it towards the trailing edge of the B pillars would help. Cleaning up the floor can't hurt either. The Smart car has to be one of the worst shapes to start with, aerodynamically, and you haven't helped it much LOL.

Two suggestions: 1: Put in a divider between the engine and the seats, possibly with plexiglass, and install some NACA ducts to get some air into the engine bay under the intercooler. 2: do the same with the roof, use naca ducts to get air to the intercooler it will look more "stock" and should flow pretty good too.

Why not slot the hatch to fit around the intercooler (make it lift off, and use hood pins to hold it in place) and mold a scoop in it (over and under) to direct air flow. Remove the window and vent the hatch to let the intercooler vent through it. You could always make a custom Lexan rear "viewing/vanity" window. Also roll the back edge of the roof down so that it opens up the full face of the intercooler. Since you have to add a firewall, you could make the bottom of the vent part of the firewall so that it goes "through" it.

@Fasterproms you should put a big clear piece of plexi glass between the cab and the engine... possibly just just lay it over the back of the cross member behind you... you will still see all the cool bits from the inside, but you won;t get the exhaust fuming into the cab, as well as an extra layer of protection from a severe engine blow-out or fire (god forbid!!). .. and you can go super safe and get bulletproof plexi glass! Maybe put some weight over the front wheels to, it'll hook up better probably, but no wheelies (sadly). just an idea I though I'd throw out there!

you don't need that scoop on the roof. fit the roof to the cross bar and a fire wall and the whole back of the car is a massive low pressure area. a small wing as you mentioned and you are set. even better, get as much of the rear of the car back on as you can. Keep up the good work, love what you are doing and thanks for the entertainment

Check the "downforce" of the car in both axles so you could tell if it's going to fly at high speeds or not. It's easy by using two lasers pointing at the ground on both axles, try to run on smooth surfaces at constant speeds, and look how much the distance to the floor varies compared to the car when it is not moving. Nice work! :)

That intercooler scoop works great! As for the brake bias, it needs way less at the rear and more at the front. If you go race it jou have to get that done first, if not you'll end up against the wall. I think you can get brakes bias adjusters that are used in racing and rally. I remember Tiltonracing.com makes them. I also think it would be good to have the rear suspension aligned for optimal tracking and traction

For pushing the exhaust out of the cabin, when you make the final roof out of whatever material, you could try putting a NACA duct style hole in it, with a scoop over the top just high enough to funnel air into the cabin and either push the exhaust fumes out or at least dilute it enough to make in managable

At least put it in neutral, release the clutch, rev it high and press the clutch to shift it in first. That is to make the input shaft turn fast to make it "less stressful" to the transmission.

Jeremy have you ever heard anything about polishing the outsides of timing chains to help guide wear at high rpm's? someone told me about it and I was looking at my replacement stock cam chains and they're pretty rough. thoughts?
@madmod
@madmod 4 жыл бұрын
Seems negligible and your guides should be have a nylon or composite surface that rides the chains so they shouldn't drag much at all anyways.
@jacobwalls452
@jacobwalls452 4 жыл бұрын
@@madmod that's what I thought...seems negligible, but maybe at high RPM it matters if you want the ultimate durability....plus it probably just costs sweat equity and some sand paper
@madmod
@madmod 4 жыл бұрын
Borg Warner makes low friction timing chains for many small displacement engines and they do so by changing link design but honestly I think better time and money is spent elsewhere. The same effort hand porting your heads will yield an actual gain in performance. Sanding your timing chains is gunna go in the pro mod list with exhaust bearings and blinker fluid.

When you do a semi-permanent roof,you should make it slide open for the slow hotter times,and close for highway/drags and rain when doing 'road tours'.Takes just side channels,and an x-brace to stop flex.That is so Awesome you're going to want to drive it allot.I would.
