phung tran yea but if you send a single ship to mine multiple asteroids for most of its minerals it could be extremely effective, however the global currency would need to adapt as well because you would need enough money to rebuild the shuttles whilst ensuring that you can get paid top dollar for your minerals which I feel like not enough people have enough money to buy them like that. however it's probably how well farm resources if we survive long enough.

Alchemists only thought of turning lead into gold less than 1000 years ago, when the books of Jabir ibn Hayyan were translated and diffused in Europe. He had devised an alternative theory to replace the Four Elements of the Greek. His theory claimed that all metals were made of the same two "principles", but different metals combined them in different ways. It was that theory that made turning lead into gold seem a plausible thing worth trying.

The idea of a philosopher's stone stems from a 2,000 year old discovery that if you mix a stone called sphalerite with copper ore, when smelted you end up with brass and, of course, brass resembles gold. A theory became prevalent that if you discovered the right sort of stone you could use it to turn base metals into gold, just as sphalerite turned copper into brass. Sphalerite, by the way, is an ore of zinc.

No, because they didn't know what "elements" really are. The ancients postulated that all earthly matter (i.e. matter that can exist on Earth) was composed of four "elements," Earth, Air, Fire, and Water (which is why we still refer to anything unprotected from weather as "exposed to the elements"), and celestial matter (i.e. matter that can only exist in the heavens) was composed of a fifth element, or "essence," called Aether (not the organic compound of that name), hence the fifth essence, or "quintessence." Since they believed that various forms of matter contained varying amounts of Earth, Air, Fire, and Water, it made sense that if you mixed, heated, cooled, etc. the right combination of materials, you could get that mysterious recipe with the right combination of E, A, F, and W to make gold. It was only when alchemists became chemists and realized that there were dozens of types of atoms, not just four, and an element could not be changed into another element through chemical means, that the Philosopher's Stone was understood to be impossible.

They were not even really trying to do it through 'chemistry'. The prevailing thought for much of the time was that the recipe for transmuting lead into gold was known then lost, but that ancient people hid the recipe in code and analogy in their various myths.

Sebastian Elytron speaking of rewriting books, doesn’t that Japanese scientist’s work suggest that transmutation can be done electrically? I guess that the concept was questionable.

I think everyone here knew that the ingredient of the philosopher stone is of course, The soul of human being.

Alchemy: the science of understanding, deconstructing, and reconstructing matter. However, it is not an all-powerful art. It is impossible to create something out of nothing. If one wishes to obtain something, something of equal value must be given. This is the law of equivalent exchange; the basis of all alchemy. In accordance to this law, there is a taboo among alchemists. Human transmutation is strictly forbidden. For what could equal the value of a human soul?

When I first heard philosopher stone the idea came into my mind is "Fullmetal Alchemist" and the innocent isphalen who sacrificed to make them.

Can’t make yourself immortal? Well when transhumanism takes hold, that may change (sort of).

It is sad that in 2017, some (most ?) people don't even know what transhumanism means. I think it is a marketing problem, transhumanism doesn't sound good/sounds too complicated. A better approach should be to call it: "never be sick again" or "the end of diseases and illnesses" (i know it isn't the true meaning of transhumanism, but i think this is the better approach no matter what).

John Rogers yeah, it’s like the word liberal. Every single thing has been said about it.
