LEGO Star Wars has been going now for a quarter of a century, and it shows no sign of stopping. For those who have been around the block a few times, though, the lineup of anniversary sets for 2024 feel disconcertingly familiar.
While there are always new LEGO Star Wars fans waiting in the wings to snap up sets that they weren't aware of (if they were even born) ten years ago, it does feel like the theme has been going through the motions lately, without a huge amount of innovation.
This being the case, the upcoming Rebuild the Galaxy Disney+ animation appears as a little ray of hope on the horizon, while it seems the LEGO Star Wars designers have taken the opportunity to explore some more niche interests with the bonus minifigures included in some anniversary sets.

I don't think there's a problem with revisiting the same subject matter, because usually each new iteration of a model is done differently. They use different pieces, different minifigures, different functions, different solutions, etc. And sometimes, these changes turn out to be very interesting and novel, so they don't feel stale at all. And even if they aren't, at least the new sets and/or minifigures are more accessible for fans who can't afford to buy the previous iterations of them on the aftermarket. It's easy for us, as longtime fans interacting primarily with other longtime fans, to lose sight of the fact that there are plenty of other fans who are new to LEGO Star Wars, and that these new sets are many people's first time seeing a particular source material in LEGO form.

I think Rebuild the Galaxy is a great way to create all sorts of new vehicles and also alternative builds. I am hoping that this sets the potential for a LEGO Star Wats movie, in the style of The Lego Movie/ The Lego Batman movie, which could lead to all sorts of new and crazy ships and locations, and stylized versions of characters. As cool as some of the recent sets have been, It'd be good for some variety! I also want some Force Awakens sets for next year. It had so many different vehicles and playsets which were so much fun, most of which I never got back then in 2015. I think that we should get some dioramas or smaller sets of Jakku, Starkiller Base and Maz's Takodana Castle. And I'd be fine with a Resistance X-Wing and First Order TIE Fighter with Finn and Poe. They need to include stuff from the sequel era, no matter what online mobs think. Lots of people love those films too. And more sets like the Holiday Millennium Falcon. Inexpensive little scenes like that please. Maybe a Halloween Vader's Castle! And I'm hoping for some video game sets, like the Rogue Shadow from The Force Unleashed. I'd love for a remake of that set, too! And when the KOTOR remake comes out, maybe a set based on that game of the Ebon Hawk.

The Vong mention made me think. What if we got a wave themed around, say, the new republic fighting the vong. Clones fighting geonosians, two different factions, with ships fleshed out for each, including your standard TIE fighters and X wings etc. Much like Ninjago, Monkey Kid, Mars Mission etc. A new villain every wave.

We won't get Legends stuff often because the ip owner isn't interested in push books from 15 years ago. Lego can't just make random stuff. Doing a mini figure here of there and the odd one-off set is one thing: entire lines based on legends novels is a reach.

I think a lot of collectors forget that play sets are for kids. And a year or two is a long time from a kids pov. So not having an x wing or something for a year is a big deal for them. (That’s how I felt as a kid who loved legos)

I mean, the stuff your describing is unique. You cant call things that didnt exsist 3 years ago old. I mean common man no company diversifies faster than a new line per year. The Shipscale models are so young that 0 of them have retired. I took a collecting break in 2020 and helmets was a new line and the mechs and shipscale as its being done now didnt exsist. The new style of diaramas was brand new too. Harry potter has had three rebuilds of Hogwarts 4 train sets and two different display sized castle and two huts. This is just normal. Getting a new OT Star destroyer after many years is hardly stagnant. Lego isnt making sequel stuff because if shelf warmed and I was collecting when those movie waves exsisted.

I think the last time the Star Wars theme surprised me was when they introduced the Helmet sets! If they re-did the UCS B wing and the UCS Imperial Shuttle I would be happy.

The Helmets should have a constant so much more they could have done, a Phase 1 or Phase 2 helmet with added parts to change it into whatever legion you wanted would have been fantastic just think the Go Brick Me set from Brickheadz. And there's still so many helmets they could do from just the OT and PT alone I would have liked to see the ST as well.

Disagree with Star Wars getting new incoming fans. The franchise is actually struggling with this for the first time. There are A LOT of different reasons for this. It obviously does not help that the content has not been great over the past 7 or so years. If I remember the stats correctly, the overwhelming majority of the Ahsoka show viewership was older millennials. Kids are not watching Star Wars. And parents are not introducing kids to the franchise like they used to. And this is important for Star Wars because, let's face it, the original six movies are a tough watch by today's standards. This is not at all the case with Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings (greatest trilogy of all time).

Would love to see more prequel stuff because star wars is a great franchise but the sets based on Revenge of the Sith and Phantom Menace are usually quite rare and I can’t find any at reasonable prices, there are still a lot of things from these movies they haven’t done yet or that they haven’t done in a while that I would love to see.

Lego could do a few more interesting sets for shows like Andor, e.g. Mon Mothma's Coruscant speeder (could be Speed Champions + scale) or the Fondor, but they are pretty hamstrung by the sequels which themselves gave us more variations on existing themes rather than brand new ships ... apart from the Resistance Bomber (I love it / it got a lot of hate), Kylo Ren's shuttle and the Resistance troop transporter. I would love to see a 2-in-1 Slave One with the parts to make either Jango or Boba's version, maybe we'll get a Naboo Royal Starship in the new midi scale range. I think with there was more they could have done with the helmets (a royal guard, at-at driver, an IG-11 as they did the Dark Troopers); the Coruscant Gunship (got a lot of hate) and the midi-scale ships are new, the UCS and MBS builds continue to be pretty amazing, the spider droid from Mando, the mechs ... They had a little theme of mini builds with Ben's hut, Yoda's hut, Luke's hut, the mini Anakin vs Obi 1 Mustafa build. There was Vader's castle which is great. The Scythe from Kenobi is a great set. Whatever you think of Solo and Rogue 1, the sets and figures were fantastic. The Ahsoka sets are top.When I think about it, they have been pretty imaginative in many ways around that core offering of Millenium Falcon, X-wing, Ties etc. A dedicated CMF line would be great, but that seems off the cards for whatever licensing / other reason. What they / we really need is more fresh Star Wars content of the type that has given us the Razor Crest, the Scythe, Ashoka's shuttle and so on as great sets. Let's see what sets the Acolyte and Skeleton Crew bring!

As a Lego fan who’s been interested in the hobby since my 1st sets as child with Dino Attack in 2005 & Lego Agents in 2008 but just recently got into Lego Star Wars last year in 2023, I love it when Lego does some out there stuff like Jek 14, Darth Revan, Enfys Nest, & Major Vonreg, so one thing that’s at the top of my list but Lego probably won’t make is a Rancor Dragon. AFOLs who complain about sets or ideas that have been “done before” need to understand that LEGOs main demographic is only into LEGO for a few years of their life unlike us weirdos.

See I think one of their biggest issues is not revisiting past sets enough, or more accurately properly. The LEGO MTT for example. The last (best) one of that way 7662 WAY back in the early 2000's. Then the last time we got that was 10 years ago and it was an AWFUL representation of it. Shrunken down way too much and could hold the same amount of Droids as the current droid carrier. The Droid carrier is another point actually, that being a May 4th exclusibe for ordering a certain amount was entirely stupid. Should of been a full on released set as it would of mega sold out. They release X-Wings here, TIE variants there and Star Destroyers everywhere, a million billion falcons, which fair enough. Best representations of star wars but at this point does that even matter anymore? One main thing I've noticed about the Star Wars sets is how entirely unbalanced the Clone v Droid armies are. You get the odd few sets of Droids (Like the AAT back in 2020) but generally its massively shrunken down sets like the aformentioned MTT or combined with some level of clones, usually being MASSIVELY outnumbered by said clones. I currently restarded collecitng LEGO again and have a decent clone army with around 50 clones, speeders, walkers and turrets galore. the Droids... 18 and 6 B2's with pathetically small representations of their bigger droids or a single Dwarf Spider droid. Clones are forever getting battle packs and army builder packs such as the 332nd pack or the 501st pack, Droids... they are lucky to get a combo pack WITH clones. Yet Rebels, though are treated similar to the CIS, still get more and get army builder packs like the Empire, usually alongside the Imperial sets. This most recent wave is a perfect example, the 2 army builder packs were 501st with a turret and the 332nd with a speeder. Surely it would of been a bit better if it was the 501st pack and a droid pack, maybe with 2 B2's 2 S.T.A.Ps and either a spider droid or speeder/turret like build the pilot for the speeder or giant gun operated by a Tactical droid maybe. or even just Vulture droids, haven't had one of those in a while lol. sorry, got on a bit of a tangent there, either way. Maybe they should stop with release what they THINK will make the biggest sales and actually try new things, sure it might not hit home as much as they want it to but its got to be worth a try. The Yavin IV base didn't work out well so it put them off? Maybe, BUT do it in smaller sets. Don't make the new thing a big 2-300 quid set, stick with the smaller levels, maximum £50 and see how it goes.

Who actually wanted that Death Star play set, sounded horrible and really boring what scenes can you act out within that, a Star Destroyer is an evergreen production should always have one on the shelves last one we got was in 2014. What StarWars sets should they be making, they're not touching both the Sequel Trilogy or The High Republic as they're not popular enough or liked widely by fans. So Lego won't take such unnecessary or unfinancially successful risks. KOTOR sets again likely won't be ever made unless like you say it conicides with a game or movie. They had stuff with EA before with Battlefront 2 (2017) and BD-1 so I'm surprised they didn't make a FO set wave, as it would have been easy to do. The OT more so than the PREQUELS is a constant seller. They're just starting to make more prequel sets again and I'm all for it. Plus LEGO is mostly locked to the Canon/whatever Disney puts out. Andor could have gotten a larger wave the same with the other shows but they never go them. If Acolyte is good then we could get sets based on that but some fans have already written it off before it's even came out. I'd be ready to get the Rebuild the galaxy Tie Fighter vs X-wing set 2 copies to have one converted and a normal version. Helmets should have been continued imo.

There are many Jedis in the Star Wars universe, yet we keep getting Anakin, Obi-Wan, or Luke. It's as if other characters are irrelevant to the franchise, which raises questions about the decision-making process. Additionally, there's a tradition where every pink brick included in a set means the team gets a cake. What department at what company would have such a tradition?

Ryan Johnson just did what he wanted on 8 with no regard for 7, and then by 9, they lost its director and were backed into a creative corner and had to bring back Palpatine to have some kind of conclusion. It was a mess. Don't even get me started on how they made Luke and Han into losers....

​@LemonAid_osc I'll give my reasoning. Some of the lines his dismissing as old hat are less then three years old. The Shipsxale mini display sets have 2 waves and 0 have retired. Mech started after my break in 2020. The new dioramas were new 4 years ago. Lego exclusive show sets are not a huge seller, but in a place were we have many relatively new lines and a brand new one releasing this year Star Wars might be the least stagnant ip theme. Harry Potter is worse, Superheros repeat as much or more, etc. We don't get sets for niche stuff because it's niche. Lego does rare one off niche stuff rarely because it shelf warms. Sequel stuff shelf also warms, which is sad, cause feel how you like about those films some of the designs are cool.

I mean, in the end, this is just an essay by an author who writes about Lego. His thoughts on the matter. It's food for the mind, some of it is new information for me, the KOTOR game for example, makes sense, some of it, like the whole mech-mania, I just think it's a bit much because we look at all the stuff all the time, but for a little kid, who gets a mech one in a while, they love those things.
