Hello Jason, I have tried Lubuntu a few times through the years, but I'm not keen on it, Bodhi Linux would probably be a better choice for that laptop and a lightweight browser such as Pale Moon. Puppy Linux would also be worth trying.

Good insight and tips Laurence. I'll try both of those when I get back. I will also focus a bit more on my video production quality as well.

Its a general misconception, that linux can make ultra slow hardware fast. This machine maybe good for libre elec, batocera with old console games, volumio for music, daphile music server, ubuntu server with services like samba or docker, and things like that. The OS itself may run decent with light distros, but the modern apps are just too resource hungry for weak processors. In particular websites are very resource hungry nowadays, web browsers are monsterapps. Lubuntu, Xubuntu & Co do a good job when it comes to dual cores of say 2010 and later, with 4 Gb Ram. I run Linux on a 2012 Macbook Air with dualcore Ivy bridge cpu and 4 Gb Ram, quite decent for office and web browsing. Also did i notice that gnome and Kde are not as fat as they used to be, they use more Ram but are quite fast nowadays.

Yes, the browsers are so heavy now on resources on whatever OS. There are cut down browsers out there but they tend to lack features people want so they never gain mainstream traction. The benefits with lightweight Linux distributions tend to be fewer running processes so the processor has a bit more headroom and less RAM usage, but it can't magically turn decades old hardware into snappy speed machines but it can offer advantages over a bloated windows install.

Hi there. Great info and tips I appreciate it! I've been trying to get my hands on an older model macbook air for cheap with 2nd or 3rd gen intel cpus. But people seem to not take care of them and they are either destroyed or they want gold for them where I live :( I do have a core 2 duo mac pro but no ivy bridge one yet!

Very true on all counts!

So a game did better than a website lol. I feel like, perhaps, there was an issue with the nic. Did you try a speed test or try playing a local video to see how it does?

No I didn't try that but I will once I get back from my vaca. Good tip

try debloated version of Windows 10 and run youtube 720p or 480p. Probably linux are choppy for media playback with youtube. Same had choppy experience with core 2 duo laptop with kali linux, zorin OS linux distribution. Now, I have been installed debloated version of windows 10 for smoother experience.

@@mwolf7780 Hi there! Good suggestion, I'll give it a shot. Is it a release through official Microsoft or a release someone cleaned up and released?

@@RememberThisTech not official, its a debloated from some tech enthusiast Try bloated versions like tiny10, superlite 10 etcc. Just search on google " debloated versions of windows 10" or "windows 11"
