The 2020 Candidates Tournament is an 8-player double round-robin that will decide Magnus Carlsen's challenger for the World Championship match that's set to take place in Dubai this December. The 14-round event is being played in the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Yekaterinburg, Russia from 17 March to 3 April 2020. The prize fund is €500,000.
The players have 100 minutes for 40 moves, then 50 minutes for the next 20 moves, then 15 minutes to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment from move 1. No draw offers are allowed until after move 40. A playoff (beginning with four 25-minute games) is unlikely as head-to-head, no. of wins and Sonneborn-Berger are used first to break a tie for 1st place. Official website: en.candidates-2020.com

Great quote from Ding's postgame interview: "At one point I wanted to take with dxe5 and make a quick draw but then I thought it's not my style and I have to play for the most critical line (Nxe5)" Incredible bounceback by Ding, to refute such a complicated engine line OTB (even if it was a semi-bluff) is why he's one of the greats of this era

Marshall Attack still is my most favorite game in capablanca saga
@somewhere6
@somewhere6 4 жыл бұрын
There are similarities but the 1918 game was more of a clear masterpiece. i.e. Marshall was going for broke continuously with no compromises. Capablanca was also direct. i.e. accept the gambit, defend, then counterattack. In this game, we have a preparation but Fabiano seemed to change directions and was unclear as to what approach he wanted to take. Likewise, Ding alternated between defending and then inducing more complication and arguably making things more difficult for himself.

I am happy that playing chess won over memorizing lines. Fabiano and Ding are my favorites players to be the candidate. I felt Fabiano was at one point playing only for time over Ding, he should have taken at least 20 minutes in a critical position. Ding's time went low but did not affect his performance. This win helps Ding psychologically and the tournament is better for the fans.

Moises Osorio fabi has lost the last 3 classical games against ding now. Surely that played on his mind. Especially the novelty. After he was down 2 pawns fabi had no other choice but to go all in and hope ding makes a mistake. Fabi knows ding seldom makes mistakes for nothing and knows his best chance is to try force a mistake in time trouble.

I agree that this is one of the great games worth analyzing in depth. However, it evokes last year's world championship, when Caruana came into almost every game with a prepared attack, but Carlsen was able to apply superior OTB thinking to neutralize his opponent. I think this game shows two things: first, Fabi is easily the most prepared player in the Candidates Tournament, and second, Ding is (not quite so easily but still...) the best OTB player -- when he's not distracted by larger concerns. Against any other opponent in the tournament, Fabi would have won in spectacular fashion. Ding shows how patience and focus pay off. If Ding wins his next one, then regardless of what else is going on in the standings, I think we'll see him again become the favourite to be Magnus's next challenger.

This is what separates the good from the greats; coming up big when you are down and out, and when the odds are stacked against you. 2-0 down, against the top seed, coming up against insane preparation, weathering the storm and than winning. What a performance. Ding is 100% back in the tournament now.
@somewhere6

Maybe. We will see. Fabiano lost this as much as Ding won it. Ding also got himself into further complications when simplifying likely could have won more easily. That's a dangerous way to play. Entertaining for sure but he will have to be in consistently top form and we have not seen that yet.

Same feeling, he doesn't mind playing moves that don't really do much as far as we are concerned but little but little his position keeps getting brilliant. Somehow I feel like his opening preparation is kind of off in this tournament, which is why in all three games he was behind after the opening But against Fabiano he was able to find the absolute winning moves especially around the time when the black Knight goes from f8 to g6 and h6

I am so glad Ding won this. It was most satisfying at so many levels. I like Ding's style, so it's good that he finally got a point here. But more than that, I don't really like the course of present day chess, where everybody has an engine and the just try to catch the other guy out of preparation with 20 moves memorized. So it was awesome, that Ding could refute Fabi's preparation.

In the end of the video, Agadmator has brilliantly formulated my overall impression of Fabiano that I got during the WCC match in 2018. Fabiano is brilliant in memorizing complicated engine lines in the opening but he lacks the feeling of the game (says the guy blundering his pieces in every second game). It is the reason why I could not root for him in the match against Magnus. Fabi is like that person in school who is respected by teachers and peers for putting great effort for learning everything and getting good grades. BUT, there are always folks who get even better grades without putting so much sweat because they are simply smarter and they can cathc everything on the fly.

@Bach Wagner If you have the second highest grade in your math class, over the course of several years' sample size, that makes you the second best at math in your class. If the third best student gets a better score on one pop quiz, it doesn't actually make him the better "math brain", it means that he won the daily competition. Fabi has better scores, on average, against his peers than Ding does and that's why he's higher rated. His Chess brain, which I think can only tangibly be measured by rating, would therefore have to be superior to Ding's just based off of virtually any logical reasoning.
