From personal experience. A lack of communication can lead to arguments about crap that's unrelated to the real problem. So either work on communication (even if it hurts) or like Link said, agree it's not working out and end it. This was where my husband and I were at (we've been married for 23 yrs), we started communicating (yes, somethings did hurt) but we have been in a much better place than we were in yrs. The best advice I got that I believe helped us (mostly me) is "listen to listen and not to respond."

It's well established that people have different "internal clocks" and it's exactly the way that those people will feel most alert and be the most productive later in the day and later in the night, and forcing your clock to a morning person's clock is going to make you feel worse and do worse.
