More like Aung San Suu Kyi was never really in power. The military were in charge, but she was a figurehead. Conveniently for the military, she was a lightening rod taking all the hits from the international community for all the wrongs which she was powerless to change. The military were happy with that arrangement until they saw her as a real threat when her party won the election in November by a landslide. They have always been the power behind the throne. Now, they are back to being the power on the throne.

@Diana Jue Fair enough. But what I was suggesting is, a sitting US President falsely claiming an unfair election and trying to stage a coup to overturn the results was a kind of encouragement to the military in Myanmar, and frankly to all politicians around the world. Even in West African solid democracy, Ghana, the presidential election was contested by the losing candidate who happens to be himself a former president who had accepted a peaceful transition the first time he lost the elections 5 years ago, as did his predecessors for decades. And all of a sudden, seeing what was going on in the US he tried to pull what I call a Trump. That’s the bad example that was set by Donald Trump. It will take for ever to fix this kind of damage.

I may be wrong, but I think by having the military to be an active political party who are being the opposition is a really bad position. Because if the military is outside of the ruling government, then whoever wins the general election that's not the military party will not have their support. So the crimes against the Rohingya people makes more sense if they were carried out by the military faction (which are not loyal to the ruling government in the first place) so the entire ruling government will not have any power to control or stop it. Military should be neutral, and loyal to whichever democratically elected government. they should not be allowed to run as a political party.

Myanmar's military is no different from any terrorist organization. It has a grip on the whole country for decades now and mobilizes whenever they want. Myanmar is lagging behind in many development metrics because of their instability

As the leader of democtacy, the army coup is not the answer, the us govt to urge the Burmese to give ultimatum to give back the power to the people by 100 days, if not the coalition of different countries will replace that govt.

Aung San Suu Kyi's party could not do anything for the Rohingyas, they did not make any progress on the return of Rohingyas. If a democratic party can't do anything for the Rohingya, who will??? The Rohingyas are cursing Suu Kyi's party.

Myanmar seems to be at risk of either becoming a pretty severe military dictatorship again, or going through some years of chaos and some level of anarchy. It probably also won't help that it'll be in the best interest for their neighbours to keep stability. The Chinese and the Indians are probably two large powers who will have a vested interest in dropping some kind of military intervention into the nation. I could realistically see a Chinese force dropping in at some point. I don't think the Chinese care too much about who's running the country, but more that they are pro China.

For people who are saying that ASSK was sheltering the military when they were called to court. Was she supposed to admit that she, as a president, cannot control her own military? In outsider's eyes, she and the military are one in the same; Myanmar. As long as you do a little bit of research, you can discover that the parliament is made of two opposing democracy and military. And the military is always wanting to throw dirty water on her, why? So that the military can get their money & power back. With the current coup as proof, u can see how greedy the military is. They don't care about the people nor the country's reputation. Willing to do anything, even risk getting other international countries involved.

China is having a keen eye on this event . They could even have had a sly , slant eyed slithering part in this . In the next ten years there will be much economic progress in Myanmar contributed by China but the white guy won 't like this and there could be repercussions . India and China's relation could be warmer if level headed blokes helm the government . My two pennies worth folks . Peace to the world .

@@aktarurrahman7940 You make a good point, my friend. You make a good point. It's ridiculous that we live in such a time: even in the developed nations, every minute feels medieval. When will intelligent people come together under a combined, modern moral standard and say "enough is enough"? We have plenty of bright CEOs, but very few of them have the basic common sense to not sell their advanced equipment to horrendous humans rights abusers. Worldwide, there is no group ensuring a minimalistic standard of peace, and there absolutely should be. There's no reason any military should have total control over its people in any nation. If a few nations got together in consensus, they could easily tighten the noose around this coupe's neck. My question is: why are civilized nations willing to block foreign interference, but they're never willing to prevent homegrown terror? You look at the police in the United States, and the way they corroborate with justice officials: the way local government feeds into state government, and they're all cheating the common people with impunity, and you wonder why we don't have a citizens justice bureau to try the corrupt public officials (and even more, why the international community isn't outlining a way to implement such a thing and demanding that it happen ASAP). It might sound 'futuristic' or 'far-fetched' to suggest a system that would be less susceptible (or even nearly immune) to corruption, but we live in the age of technology! Our court systems should be (and probably could be) as sophisticated, human-proof, and consistent as cryptocurrency--there's no reason they shouldn't be! We have everything we need to craft a perfect government, and it probably doesn't even matter if it just starts with 10 people and a small plot of land: if it works, eventually it should take over. I'm so tired of it, bro. When are we, as a society, going to get out of the dark ages and say, in unity, 'bring the future in'.

When the members of Burma Army talks about Democracy, They are talking about the Tribal-Democracy which is the only thing they understand. Daw Suu Kyi means Democracy, a genuine precious Democracy and as precious as Gold in the eyes of the international community as well as for the innocent people of Burma. We have a problem here, because we can not mix gold with with cheap plastic-rubbish in the house of goldsmith or in the house of parliament. The only thing we should do now is to pick p the rubbish and chuck them out. Let the EU send the responsible generals to the international court of justice in the Hague.
