Ally is very good. 24/7 customer service is great, and I very rarely have transaction blocks, card holds, and virtually no spending or transaction limits like all the brick and mortar banks that want to block your card just about every day for "suspicious activity", causing you to get stuck somewhere.

I have ING which has a very high 4% interest and it's approved by the central bank. I transferred it to another bank, though. The problem is there are no people to talk when you need to inquire about something, they do have the highest rates for just storing money there but it's a good back up bank.

I am researching online banks right now- all the goods and bads. Wanting to put my 6 months account in one. For all the good reviews listed here, I find a lot of bad reviews online for the same banks. But what I am most concerned about is, how accessible is my money when I need it? Do they link back to your brick and mortar account easily? Is depositing a check by picture easy and accepted without problem? Which ones do you receive a free debit card or check book? Looking for something that is paying over 2%, low/no fees, and a small minimum balance.
@billybuttons42985 жыл бұрын
I use CIT Bank. It's definitely nothing fancy. You link your account to your brick and mortar and the only way that I can tell to move money into CIT Bank is by transferring from your brick and mortar. That's definitely the negative; you'll have to perform an external transfer to your brick and mortar bank in order to get those funds. Which is free, but it takes a business day. The good news, it's FDIC insured and you get a 2.45% rate. No real minimum account balance, but if you want to keep receiving the higher 2.45% rate, you have to do one of the following: 1. deposit $100/month into the account or 2. have a $25k balance. Otherwise, the interest drops to 1.14%.

I have a high yield savings account through PNC. 2.35% interest if you live in a state without a PNC branch. My goal is to keep 3 months of my emergency fund at my Credit Union and 3 months in my PNC account just to have something that will keep up with inflation better.

I was thinking the same as I am not 100% comfortable with having all my savings in an online account. Is this your reason also for having some in a credit union and some in a high yield account?

I'm 19 years old with a 36,000~43,000 income. I'm in baby step #3 and I do not own a home. How should I go about looking for a home price wise? I'm trying to get something quick so that I can get out of my father's spare room, but I also do not want to go crazy and be broke off of it. Furthermore I'm living on the minimum amount possible so 3 - 6 months of expenses is less than 6000 what would you recommend as a good emergency fund since this amount of money doesn't really give me a conforming feeling if bad things were to happen.
@arthrodea5 жыл бұрын
This is just my opinion, but I think you should include the cost of monthly rent or mortgage plus all the utilities (water bill, electric bill) into your 6 months living expenses. If you take home around 36,000/yr minimum, I would think around 18,000 dollars. Maybe at least bulk up your emergency fund to 10,000 dollars to start. You probably also need to start establishing "sinking funds" to cover expected costs that are going to come up. You are going to need money to cover car repairs at some point (so each month you put money aside into a "car fund"). You are going to need to buy birthday or Christmas presents. You will need to go to the dentist once a year, and may end up in a doctors office for a (hopefully minor) medical problem that needs a copay or medication - so you start a "medical fund" and put money into that each month. You need a "home repairs" fund, because at some point the roof will leak or the toilet will break in your new home, and you have to fix that. These type of expenses often throw people off, and they start reaching for their emergency fund, but they are actually expected costs.

@@zachus1000 Pretty much anyone could start a credit union. If the members sign in the membership agreement their purchases could be used as a collection of data (obviously not "John spent $12.99 at Dunkin donuts") to show for example a correlation between Starbucks transactions and low average account balances.
