Today we are trying to use our John Deere 430 garden tractor to move the temporarily incapacitated John Deere Model 60 from its current spot. It's in its own rut. Will the 60 be too heavy? Will the 430 be too light? Watch and see. Thanks for watching.

OK viewers,, so what did we do wrong here? I still believe that the little guy (relatively speaking) has the muscle to do this. If you have any suggestions, we might try them out in a follow up video. Did the 430 need more weight? Maybe take the front plow off? Let me know your ideas!

~1500lbs vs ~6000lbs on a low traction surface. You need at least another 500lb, fill the tires, add wheel weights, add some suitcase weights.

I think in addition to the weights. attaching the strap higher up on the 3 point would "pull" the rear end down adding more weight to the tires rather than just pulling it. my 2c

Pump the rear tires up, that would help, then get a bigger horse. Hitch point was too low on the 430!

In 2013 I had to bring a 2 axle 16’ car hauling trailer down a hill, around a sharp right then sharp left it never would have made behind a pickup. So instead I used my Toro 520xi but I had to do several stop and backup manouvers to get through the two sharp turns. Otherwise it would be a 1-1/2 mile round trip to go down to the public road and loop around to get back on the farm via the old driveway.

I personally would have used the lift leverage of the 3pt hitch.. backed right up the front tires on the model 60 and made the strap as short as it would go. Lift the 3pt on the 430 and put all the front end weight of the model 60 on the rear axle of the 430. 😉 would have drove off with it..

Try a kinetic energy rope! Matt’sOffRoadRecovery (KZbin) uses them with great success. When the budget allows put some 42 or 70lb suitcase weights on for traction. Be careful to go low on tractor (pulling) so you don’t flip backwards with too much bite!

I would LOVE to get one of those. I can't remember if my winch can be respooled with that or not. I really need the suitcase weights but they don't come up used very often so I'll probably have to buy them retail. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I see them for sale but at the same or higher price or more than new! Head done to Hartville Hardware some time, they are a JD dealer. 60-90$ respectively. I’ve never seen that rope on a spool. Pretty sure that’s not how it works watching Matt.

Well I’ll comment too, I think you had it revved up to much. Just making the wheel spin. Two wheel drive 1/2 ton would not of moved it either. You were kinda out classed there. Those 60’s are heavy. And being the tires snuck in the ground would make it very hard to move. Diff lock, low range, lower rpm with a little brake work would help. But still would not of got that out of there. But after all my goings on, it’s great to see a real video and people really trying. Have a good day.

So I checked this one out and I remember looking at the 54" deck craftsman back before I bought the Husqvarna. I thought it was a pretty decent machine but I picked the Husqvarna up used, but nearly new, because it has the Kawasaki twin engine, electronic locking differential, 23" rear tires, and most importantly the K66 hydrostatic transmission.

So, Watching the video, I think you were setup for failure from the beginning. Your tractor has enough grunt for it but maybe a little short on weight. It might have helped if you could have attached the strap at the top of the 3 point from the beginning. Digging out in front of all 4 tires to give you a level spot to get rolling instead of trying to dead pull it out of the ruts would have got you some momentum. Lastly, easing into the motion slower instead of trying to jerk it might have helped you keep from digging holes. The shock of the sudden stop just breaks the traction. Having a kinetic rope may have also been an option. Just my opinion. Good luck, keep up the good work, and hope to see more. I hit the subscribe button, I hope you can to. We will be having some John Deere garden tractor restoration videos soon.

Why the 430 sound like that at high rev? With smoke
@tractorstrailsandlivingfree
@tractorstrailsandlivingfree 2 жыл бұрын
Very good question. I noticed the same thing during filming and on the video. I can't really say why that happened but I can outline the conditions and maybe someone with more expertise could fill the gaps in. It was pretty cold that morning but I did allow it to warm up for several minutes. It was the greatest load to date put upon the tractor since I came to own it. It seemed to happen after I throttled the engine up before pulling. Traditionally, smoke is a sign of incomplete combustion, so I don't know if throttling up put more fuel into the cylinder? I can say this, we used it for a couple more hours that day with no issues or smoke that I can remember. Thanks for watching!

@loutoolguy2644 2 жыл бұрын
Ya not a good video, you with a heavy tractor on you. The trick is weight and traction. A pulling point higher will get you in trouble FAST! So if you wanna turn that baby into a tank add the suitcase weights (whenever you can). That’s step one if you get get traction and you move what you want then…good to go. If front end gets light then a front weight rack with more suitcase weights will glue you to the ground. Then you can move whatever the tractor is capable of. If you can’t then watch some videos on snatch blocks or block and tackles. I watched a guy pull a tree out of the ground with a 45:1 pulling ratio. I would suggest building up to that level only after practice. We don’t want to see that kind of failure captured either.

Why are running the engine at full throttle??? It is because you think horsepower will pull the big tractor, because you think like a four year old. TRACTION pulls the load. When you run full throttle you take what pissy amount of traction you have and piss it in the wind. That 430 has enough power to move the 60 idling. Art from Ohio

That's cool man. So you are saying that if I just have a lot more weight and put it in low range and moderate throttle it will pull the 60? I'm skeptical, but ok. Also from Ohio, thanks for commenting.

@artszabo1015 6 ай бұрын
@@tractorstrailsandlivingfree Don't put it in low range - that puts more torque to the wheels breaking traction. Put it in the highest gear that doesn't stall the engine. I am an old man and I know what I am talking about. You need to keep the engine almost at the stall point.
