It's great overall but there's a very slight input latency present compared to real hardware - this is a well known issue but the devs don't have a good fix for it. If you're very sensitive to it, you can feel a noticeable difference. Most people probably can't tell but a few games are really difficult for me to play due to the latency.

I'm not a fan of running PS2 games at higher resolutions. The thing is that at higher resolutions low poly models, low resolution textures, LOD transitions are 10x more noticeable and that ruins the immersion. I usually play PS2 games in PCSX2 emulator at native resolution, but with CRT phosphor mask simulation, and because I can also simulate PVM, I get much better picture clarity even compared to my real SD CRT TV. Sometimes I might use 2x resolution scaling becasue that still look good with CRT phosphor mask, but 4-8x resolution scale looks really bad, becuse I can see every single imperfection, and textures look extremely blurry.

Definitely. My only gripe was solved once options were added to take full advantage of G-Sync to perfect frame pacing. I now much prefer PCSX2 over original hardware. Some games require per-game adjustments to make the experience flawless, but all the tools are there.

If you own a CRT TV, go with a PS2. Otherwise, emulation is the better choice. Using a PlayStation 2 on a 4K TV with 480i or 480p resolution can be frustrating, as everything will look too blurry without a hardware scaler, which can cost between $100 and $500.

For 11:25's case here it's more to deal with how the game handles input, but for Gran Turismo 3/4 the case for those have been fixed by Silent's and Aero's controller patch to get more linear throttle and brake inputs. Now as a researcher for the series I'm still digging my way through the game to get to that point to where you can have more movement for the triggers. So it's more done by a patch basis than anything else

Surely the answer is yes by now? 😂 PCSX2 has been going with 20 years of updates by now and hardware has become almost advanced enough for stable PS3 emulation on most titles. I’ve only played a handful of PS2 recently so I can’t say for sure but I’d say it’s a pretty stable emulator by this point…

There are some games that might still have issues. I remember trying an old Astroboy game, where the game seemed to run fine, but the game would crash at the first boss, making it unplayable. I don't know if this was fixed, I don't think it was. Another game I recall having issues is with Superman Returns, which is completely broken in PCSX2 1.6, but playable in 1.7 onwards, and still has minor rendering issues to this day.

They did do something about it. It's called having a freesync monitor and disabling vsync on the emulator. People complaining about this also forget the PS2 had the highest input delay of all 6th gen consoles so the emulator isn't too far off from the original experience so those who complaing about it are probably the rythm gamers, like DDR.

Slight correction, Sonic waterdall effect did not depend on the "bad" composite video signal to work, it axtually depended on the interlaced 480i video which was a fundamental aspect of how a CRT diplay worked. The waterfall looks proper and beautiful even on a CRT with RGB input.

Uhm, Sonic is running in 240p, not 480i and no it looks way worse with RGB but the fuzzy nature of a CRT definitely helps.

@jayminer yes it's technically 240p but every other line is left blank and on the next frame the other lines are rendered. That's why it is called 480i meaning interlaced, not true 480p.

@@agnel47 No, in a 240p mode the same lines are rendered every frame (60 times per second in NTSC land, 50 times per second in PAL land). It's not alternating lines (interlaced) because that would flicker like crazy. I don't know where this misconception of interlaced comes from as I have seen it so many times but 240p that old consoles was using was truly progressive even if it was kind of a hack of the standard to avoid the interlacing.

I play PS2 on my Steam Deck, handheld or on a huge TV via a dock... Only time I have input lag that can be kinda percieved if you look hard enough, is when it is docked and I'm using a Bluetooth controller... However, I do hate newer TVs that add so much lag with their processing, and even if they have a 'Game Mode', there is still so much lag...

Can't forget the original Ratchet & Clank. It's quite CPU intensive to emulate. On top of that, it doesn't render correctly with some forms of hardware acceleration, which makes it even more intensive to emulate. But it's fine because I prefer playing it on PS2 on a CRT, even compared to emulation on my 4k OLED.

Just started using it for gran turismo 4 and have to say looks pretty damn good with game set to 1080i and emulator video output to 4k on an Oled. A step up from the lower resolutions on a crt at least for this games. Have yet to try any other titles though and can't feel the input lag for this game that much (a game like gradius V or any fg be good to test out)

Emulation is already good to the point where you don't need original native hardware. I more happy being able to emulate old games at much higher resolution than spending money on getting upscalers and crt for gameplay. Even linux handhelds are good for playing old school console games now.

The PCSX2 is just way too convenient. Upscaling, textures, connecting wireless controllers. It can be used on potato PC’s/Laptops. I love my PS2 but the PCSX2 is just too good right now.

Just to correct you, FMV cutscenes of both God of War are not in low resolution but in 540p (HQ), this is the reason why both games are in DVD9 (dual layer) 8.5 Gb

I think in the videos he says that the FMVs are low resolution bc you can't upscale them in the emulator like the in game graphics so if let's say you upscale the game in the emulator you will have the game at 1080p resolution or higher but you'll stick with the 540p FMV/videos as they are what they are

As a matter of fact, the samsung s10 plus with wii mote controller blurtoothed, using dolphin bar to pickup the signal.. ported out with a switch dock, or steam deck dock , one time i had re5 running with a wii mote and a ps4 controller , you cant really just switch from ps2 to anything else on the base hardware. In MGS2 if you release the square button fast, Snake shoots. If you release it slowly, Snake puts the gun down without shooting.

Under software mode, ridge racer v is perfect and almost every visual bug has been fixed in hardware mode too except 1 where the back of the vehicle is like static but with the correct color so it doesn't look too bad.

I dont know about MGS2 with the text and all, but i had issues with Driver Parallel lines, like if u go to ur garage and want to tune up something the text is like fvcked up, but well enabling HW fixes and then u increase cpu sprite render size to 8 (512 max width), the text was flawless, as far as i can tell. Compared to the SW mode, and it seemed fixed and again as far as i can tell and the little testing i did, it has no effect on like driving or anything else. Also no perf. hit. And i have a 11yr old PC, so with newer HW shouldnt be an issue. Again i dont know if in later game stages it wont cause some BS on the way, but playing like first hour or so of the game didnt produce anything catastrophic. SO maybe it could work on MGS as well. It fixed the essentially UI in that menu, and i think also the map was or had issues. Fixed it all. Maybe it might help for someone that also has these issues and maybe it wont and maybe it did fix this issue but it screwed something else that will later be problematic, i really dont know. But so far its a fix, i guess. Maybe it is already added to autofixes. But like with one or two ratchet and cland games i needed to manualy adjust with hw fixes cause the auto fix was not really good. Im just saying many games are just plug and play sorta, but some still need tweaking. SO Hardware Fixes ON, CPU Sprite Render Size to 8 or less, depends, Driver needed 8.

Pcsx2 allows me to a use a framerate limiter so that I get perfect 60 fps on my 60 hz HD CRT. Ps2 never looked and played so good. I play at 1536p downscales from 1800.

My biggest problem with emulators is that they give me no guarantee that the game I choose to play will go smoothly from start to finish. My emotional disposition when playing always ends up being somewhere between anxiety and doubt, which ends up ruining the experience in some way.

The problem is playing a game on the original console doesn't guarantee a smooth experience either, many a game I have played crashed due to random bugs or something on the disc, the extras you get by playing on an emulator outweigh the experience of the original machine. Things like upscaling the graphics to 4k to remove the jaggies or even playing games at 60 fps instead of 30 fps worse.

LRPS2 on the newest version of retroarch is the best way to play PS2 games now. Low Level hardware accelerated software emulation with upscaling and super sampling, it has all the perks of software emulation rendering acccuracy with great upscaling thet does not break the visuals when rendering at higher resolution. The catch? Your GPU needs to be powerful enough to take advantage of it, and its only available in retroarch so that sucks, because retroarchs interface is dog-ass.

Not too long ago they fixed a bug in God of War that was there for almost 20 years and nobody noticed because most people that use the emulator don't own the console and they don't care.

You're spot on, i love emulation but input lag is really annoying In some emulators, mostly 5th gen consoles and Sega Saturn. I had to play gradius 5 on real hardware on my CRT to 1cc it.

@ItaloInferno Retroarch does a great job with run ahead for older consoles up to PS1. I tested SNES games and it really works. Duckstation good enough with CRT advance shaders that i can tolerate the input lag because they look sooo good its like real CRT, but on PS2 its just too complex. I bought a beast Trinitron 30kg, but its picture is shot and i am waiting for set aside some cache to refurbish it. CRT just the best. One more thing every USB controller has lag. Original hardware controllers where not USB.

Correct me if I'm wrong, USB lag adds up to others like display, software and other things, a frame lasts 16.67 milliseconds, it doesn't matter if my input lag is below 16 milliseconds, it will always lag a single frame. My flat screen has 1 millisecond of lag, my controller 8. I thought it wouldn't make much of a difference buying a less laggy controller since it would always lag a frame no matter what I do. I hope I explained my question well enough, English isn't my first language.

Are you using an Intel CPU? Those have delay issues in the last few generations. Nothing perceptible in PCSX2 on 5700X3D on my end. There's a ton more input lag in some example videos that others have posted, so I'm not saying it's just in your head. I just don't suffer as much.

But it will happen, Switch will surpass PS2 ("160" Million) in less than a year. So maybe you should start preparing mentally for that lol. Nintendo last forecast claims 146M, and they probably sold 5 - 7 millions just this last quarter. So expect Nintendo to be Crowned THE king of most sold consoles sold ever. Btw, most people believe Sony is the current leader, but Nintendo has won more Generations than Sony. Third Gen - NES/NIntendo Fourth Gen - SNES/NIntendo Fifth Gen - PS1/Sony Sixth Gen - PS2/Sony Seventh Gen - Wii/NIntendo Eight Gen - Switch/NIntendo Nineth Gen - UNDEFINED / Probably Sony PS5 That's 4 Generations won by Nintendo against two Gens, maybe three won by Sony. LOL, but perhaps Sony will pull an extra 5million PS2 out of their asses again once "Nintendon't" crushes those numbers.

All these jive turkey moaning people you do have to have a fairly good pc to run it at its best my emulation pc is a I7 13700k rtx 3070 I run in 4k and with even high res texture packs. The games are incredible if you know what you are doing
