Penny struggles. At most stuff she tries. It's not that she doesn't care. It's that... she's just awkward. Also she might be addicted to poppies.

As bad as "Pam passes out on the couch" sounds, the reality is that Pam chooses to sleep on the couch while giving Penny the bedroom. She has shown before that she loves and cares for her daughter. That said, Pam is still a problematic mother. She's embarrassed by her situation and that's why she doesn't like people visiting her home or judging her and Penny. She's probably experienced a lot of hardship and that makes her a harsh mother. Not that it excuses her behavior -- Penny is a more insecure and depressed person for it. But it's a very realistic dynamic.

Her question about having kids is always really funny to me because I've always already had kids with someone else when I get this cut scene. I always want to say "Yes Penny I have kids already. They're the children following my husband around at all the town events" That being said, none of the mirage candidates seem to remember that you are married. Either that or they're all intentionally flirty with a married person.

I identify heavily with the awkward well-intentioned but poorly-executed side of Penny… I also always viewed her as one of the more mature/adult candidates due to her teaching job and how she’s always cleaning up after Pam (or it seemed that way to me). I also really liked that when married to her, she still goes and teaches the kids and even does some grocery shopping and stuff for you… busy busy woman. I have a lot of respect for someone trying their best to make good out of a bad situation.

The only thing I found strange about Penny was something she said about Vincent, it wasn't something horrible or anything like that, it's just a small contradiction. You see, in one of Penny's dialogues she talks about children's studies and says that Jas is very good at two specific subjects, but when she goes to talk about Vincent she stops like she doesn't have anything positive to say about his grades and says he has a lot of imagination, but there's a problem, at Vincent's house there's a paper with his grades, and it's possible to see that he got at least B in most subjects and an A in sports. I don't know much about this grading system but it doesn't look that bad, especially for such an active child, but in the previous dialogue Penny doesn't say that Vincent is good at sports or anything like that even though he got a good grade in that subject. I thought it was strange that she didn't remember something she did herself since she wrote the note about Vincent's grades, but there's nothing positive to say about him when talking to us, except Jas, she says two subjects that Jas is good at, but doesn't say the one that Vincent is good at...yeah, everyone has their favorites, even if it's just a little bit...

I made a video about Vincent a while back, so I went back to check real quick! He got: Reading: C Spelling: D Math: C Social Studies: B- Art: B- Sports: A Assuming a US grading system, that would mean his GPA is currently 2.5 which is a C, but it's being bolstered by that physical education class. Food for thought!

People don’t like that telling her the truth hurts her feelings, but isn’t that realistic? Yeah, you lose hearts with her, because she’s embarrassed by being admonished by a relative stranger, or because you don’t like her heartfelt gesture. But, you can earn those hearts back. What people are really annoyed with is that they “game” Penny’s responses because they don’t want the hassle of needing to re-earn her hearts. But sometimes being honest requires sacrifice, and if you want a healthy relationship, you may need to put in the extra work.

Penny is the textbook definition of someone with a combative/abusive parent and little to no parental guidance. She wants to be independent and break free of the restrictive life she's had to lead so far. But with no real role model to look up to and take inspiration from, she fumbles, especially because fiction often provides unrealistic expectations on how achievements should go. She's too ashamed of letting people in because of her home life to really have friends, which stifles her even more, and she's too afraid to really speak her mind to anyone because she's so accustomed to not being able to speak it at all. When she does finally open up to the farmer, it's her being able to move on from having a life so controlled by her mother. I like Penny a lot, and, a part of that is because... I relate to her heavily. We have a lot of the same interests, speech patterns, history, and the same complicated relationship with our mothers. Penny feels very real to me. While troubled home lives can be nightmarish tales of horrific abuse by cruel, evil-hearted people... they can also be this. (Also I agree with you so much on the "feminine women can't cook" trope. My problem with it is that it's always treated like a flaw of her as a person, and it's always characters like Penny who would be otherwise ideal "housewives". Smells like old-fashioned misogyny to me.)

I also relate to her a lot because of all this, I am in an almost identical situation to her, except maybe even more restrictive... and that's the reason I don't like her much, oddly enough. Sometimes if something hits TOO close to home you just don't want to deal with it in an escapist game like that. But she is a complex character, which is good.

All the marriage candidates, from what I have seen, have that vibe of being the main character of their own story until suddenly the farmer sweeps in and solves their major life issues with love and marriage. We never get to see these characters solve their issues on their own. To be fair, the farmer is the main character and a large part of the game's appeal is in its wish fulfillment. A good future development would be to see how the characters you don't marry continue on and solve (or don't solve) their life problems.
@marykateharmon
@marykateharmon Жыл бұрын
Yeah. I would love to see further development of them towards their goals, like a second post-marriage/ post-not getting married with the farmer chapter of their lives, reflected in changes in their patterns in the world and in what they say. It would also be nice if others could get married to each other, especially if the farmer could help encourage certain ones if none of the pre-determined ones are to their liking (with their being pre-determined romances between different sets of characters then a secondary one that happens if the farmer marries one or the other of them unless the farm coaxes a character towards someone else) then the farmer's kids could grow up and have other children they hang out with that are around their age. (And Penny could have a questline to get help getting an official teaching license if she doesn't have one already, which is kinda up in the air and would be a good next ). Serious changes could then have sprung from the farmer's introduction to how Pelican Town develops that would likely never quite be the same from player to player, especially depending on how the children's personalities might be made. Though I would argue with Sebastian, it's one story where moving in with the farmer actually does work as a next chapter for his story. He wanted an escape from his house and at first that only escape seems to be to save enough from his job to move into the city. But while he hates his living situation, he also still likes his friends in town and the nature around him. Then the farmer comes and he now has another option, one with a spouse that is willing to take part/understand his hobbies and his work and understands the desire for a fresh start, but also doesn't require him to move far from everything he does love. Then once married, his job most easily allows him to be the spouse that stays at home and looks after the kids while the farmer's off mining or simply busy in the fields. He's also able to work on connecting with his mom again now that the stress of being at the house is gone and he finds new hobbies/things to do and comes out of his shell like collecting frogs and helping around the farm, even requesting the slime hutch (even as I really wish that he would also help with the slime hutch and would beg concerned ape to add that in so that he's not simply asking me to do something that he doesn't take part in at all. I solely got that because he wanted it) that help him develop a new zest for life that helps him not be depressed like he was before while all feeling very in character. I would like to play more of the Stardew version of D&D with him sometimes as a bit of a unique date night and a storyline where he's actually dealing with his family ties more now that he's out of the house and can be helped to reconcile with them or to cut out the ones out of his life he really shouldn't need to deal with. But otherwise, Sebastian's story actually has a satisfactory conclusion in being with the farmer and so I would argue is a large part of why everyone likes his romance story.

I completely feel Penny, especially with the “caring about something, trying to help, getting scolded, and retreating into fiction again” part. Having grown up in a similar situation, I often just stop trying immediately after a screwup and just go back into escapism. With George, I don’t think the friendship loss is her disliking you because you didn’t agree with her. Rather, I think it’s because this new person she just met saw what a screw-up she thinks she is and doesn’t want to interact with you because of that negative case. Her six heart event having the neutral option being telling her it’s bad could be seen as her being comfortable with you in that manner, now. I just do wish she got her own arc instead of it being “get married everything’s good now.” I know that ruins the fantasy for a lot of people, but more could’ve been done than you swooping in and saving her, taking away her chance to get better.

if you think about it, getting married, having kids is her goal. Some people hate it because they can't relate to this goal and think it's somehow wrong because of that or treat her like she is stupid because she has a "basic" goal in life. But I think if that's what she actually wants, that's her choice and saying she needs "an actual goal" is pretty fucked up

Penny is the character I can relate to the most in Stardew. I do think along the lines of getting her out of her situation, but also I think she can do a lot of good if someone is there backing her up and making sure she has a safety net to learn from her mistakes and get better. I personally have the same issue: I care a lot about people, but being Autistic, I cannot always read people correctly, and I have to explicitly learn what to most is nature. Even my IRL partner has a lot in common with Penny (though she is Ace, and her mental status and upbringing are far worse).

I think is a good scene, if we take out the "George you stupid ungrateful old timer should apologize" that he apologizing seems to imply, I also think Penny lost of hearts is realistic since she genuinely cares about George and Evelyn as her secret note letters implied, but here she feels that you're ganging against her for no reason.

@@stargazer6097 do you crucify them for helping, though, or do you in your heart understand that they were only trying to help? People are being extra harsh on Penny while she's only trying to help. I understand that a lot of times we don't wanna be helped, but isn't it fair to also put ourselves in Penny's shoes, since we're already doing that for George? Penny's probably looking for any situation to include herself in to give herself a sense of "usefulness", because with a mom like Pam, who can't get enough of blaming Penny for every little thing, she probably never felt like she's useful enough, good enough. She's craving the feeling of people thanking her and appreciating her because she almost never have felt that way her entire life with this type of mom. So, yes. Geroge's annoyance is justified, but so is Penny's attempt at helping. We always side with the person that seems like the victim, and that's totally understandable, but there's no victim here, there's just a misunderstanding between two adults who didn't make a fuss about it and just went on with their lives.

I suppose to address the “woman who can’t cook” trope, I think it serves a purpose and fits well if it doesn’t become a primary flaw. This is bearing in mind that the trope of a women being unable to cook, regardless of the light it’s placed in, has involvement in reflecting or going against traditional gender roles. At its core, it originally served as a criticism towards women - oh, she’s an otherwise amazing person, but can’t cook, so she’s no longer appealing. This shifted over time, with feminism and the like, into something that was embraced in writing women, embracing that the fact she isn’t good at cooking but still a perfectly capable human being. She’s flawed, but there’s nothing wrong with her flaws, in a society that has embraced a mentality of perfectionism in women. And overall, I think much like other traits and flaws, so long as it’s not their primary trait or flaw without the context fitting that, it’s fine. I see no harm in having a female presenting character, or any character period, not even be able to boil water, or even be a top level chef, but the key is that these are details that round out a character, not a singular skill or flaw that overrides everything else (unless of course your story is about their cooking trials, in which case go with it). The overall goal is a dynamic character, and I think for Penny, not being able to cook isn’t necessarily a primary trait, but more a broader reflection of a common theme: she has good ideas, but doesn’t do well at putting them into action. And perhaps a bit of perfectionism in that she expects it to go well, and if it doesn’t she’s just devastated, without a push to learn and grow from the failure. Which frankly probably goes a lot into her psyche from her neglected living situation.

Penny's more interesting if you assume that she'll fall in love with and marry Sam in the future (as the Flower Dance partners might imply). The farmer offers almost too much support. Unlike some of the other bachelors, Penny isn't nearly as driven by personal goals - she needs external motivation, and with a rich partner who is literally good at everything, there's nothing even remotely uncomfortable enough in her life to do that. Not only do Sam and Penny have a much more equal relationship where they'd both need to step up to build their independent lives, their personal weaknesses become something that helps the other grow and improve as people. Penny encourages Sam to be more mature, but that same immaturity encourages Penny to be more creative, and to view things in a different light that she wouldn't have felt about to do when being a child in poverty with an unfit parent. Plus children's entertainer and elementary teacher just make such a nice duo to think about!

Penny's scene with George turned me off, especially because like mentioned in the video, her losing fp when you try to correct her or don't lie to preserve her feelings. Her (and Haley) not knowing how to cook makes sense to me. I doubt Pam taught her how, nor did Pam teah her how to properly manage a house, which was implied when you build their house and Penny expresses how difficult it is to keep it clean. But I do agree that the trope is played out, overall. It's interesting to me that only a few of the romance-able characters have good backgrounds. Sam has an absent father and has to comfort Vincent about his fears, Sebastian is neglected by his step father, Maru's father is controlling and possessive, Shane had depression and likely PTSD, Leah has an abusive ex, Alex's father was abusive and his mother died, leaving him to be raised by his grandparents who are in an unhealthy marriage. The only ones with "normal" backgrounds are Haley and Emily (whose parents left to travel but both are adults and can care for themselves), and Harvey and Elliot (who we get almost no background for apart from their jobs)

I’ve never actually married Penny because I’m in a perpetual loop of story options with one character (lol), but I definitely fall into the trap that I want to help Penny out of her current situation more than I feel attached to her personal story or growth through the heart scenes. I think her trying to cook is endearing, because it reminds me of my stepmom, who couldn’t cook much when she met my dad but kept trying different things for our sake. And I appreciate that Penny places the kid discussion on the table early in the relationship building-it’s an important talk to have between partners to make sure they’re compatible going into the future. But the one cutscene that really puts me at odds with Penny is the scene with George. It makes me so uncomfortable that she just steps in and pushes him aside. Regardless of intention, it’s incredibly disrespectful to assume someone who is elderly and/or disabled requires your help. Consent is key in any situation, and I will take the loss of friendship points in this scene every time. It’s too bad that we don’t get to see too much growth with Penny after marriage. I think it makes sense that she would be a stay-at-home mom / part-time teacher for the kids of the valley. It suits her desires and is a respectable choice of career. However, in the case of game mechanics, it’s not unique to anything she was doing before marriage and it’s on par with the other marriage candidates who generally do something from home and are taking care of any kids that you choose to have. So, the end result is Penny being unremarkable as a relationship partner, which is a shame.

It’s crazy that Penny’s father feels trapped yet trapped them in a life of poverty in an effort to free himself. Ofc don’t stay in an environment you’re not happy in but also… idk I can’t help but think he ran off with Pammy’s money. But that’s also “I know this person but not that person” bias. Also tbh I relate to Pam’s “don’t touch my stuff” arguments. Like I’m fine with people helping but it’s prob best to help when I’m there too so I know where things are 😅

I think the reason the "I don't want to be tied down" answer doesn't drop as much is because you KNOW you don't want that to happen. I think the farmer doesn't want to hurt their family, so they'd rather just not get close to people to begin with.

My interpretation of Penny's character is that living in the trailer with Pam, she never gets the chance she needs to actually shine; she's like a candle under a bushel. Marrying the farmer allows her to thrive in a way she never could while taking care of her mother. I don't buy the idea of marrying Penny to 'save' her; i married her in my game because she's a sweetheart and I liked her.

Her 8 heart event was also funny but in a lesser way, she asked me about wanting kids and I stared at her like, girl I'm married with 2 kids, YOU WENT TO MY WEDDING!!

Listen, the whole neglectful parents thing, I can relate to. But I cannot get past the fact that she's so easily offended and you can lose so many hearts with her for saying the wrong thing. She's had to walk around eggshells but then now you, the player and potential spouse has to walk around eggshells with her because you call her out on her bullshit (esp the George scene where she's objectively wrong for) and you lose friendship with her and I can't move past that.

My impression of Penny is that she suffers from depression. I think she is my least favorite marriage candidate cause the game wants you to lie or encourage bad behavior as you get rewarded in universe with more hearts for doing so. That struck me as a very bad dynamic to fall into and Penny just gives me the vibe of someone who would be massively codependent. Like, that can be really bad and maybe it just hits close to home but it is why I do not like her as a marriage candidate. She views the farmer and having kids as fixes to her life, as things that will break her out of her depression. That was my impression. It's kinda weird, but I actually started to like Haley as a candidate. Like she is totally mean to you at the beginning but as she gets more hearts with you you see her grow so much. She becomes a lot more open minded and willing to try new things based on her dialogue. When I first played I hated her for how she initially treats the farmer, so I find it funny that she is now my go to batchelorette. Also, the deadly cook is an overused trope, I see it so much in anime and sitcoms that it just is a beaten down joke that is centered on like, "woman bad" humor. It would be cool to have more cases of one person is able to cook but the other is really good, or if one person can't cook have them ask for help in learning because usually an adult recognizes playing with fire can be bad if you don't know what to do. Or maybe both or no one is a good cook. I dunno, deadly chef is just overdone and gets more of a groan of boredom than any jovial sensation at this point for me.

I despise that I have to lie to her to become friends. It's not okay to just grab someone's wheelchair, especially while they are in it!!! But telling her that just makes her upset. Specifically in her 8-heart scene, it sucks that you lose friendship if I tell her the truth, that I'm just not a fan of kids. She acts like having different opinions about your own future plans is a friendship deal-breaker. We're still only friends at 8 hearts, why can't we just disagree?

My defense for the kids aspect would be that if the idea is that you're getting hearts with her in order to marry her, it's best to agree on whether you want kids or not before marriage, so that would literally be a deal-breaker for her if you both aren't a fan of kids and don't want a large family like she does. Think of how terrible it would be in real life if one person wanted a large family of seven/eight kids and the other could only barely assent to having one child if even that, and they were thinking of getting married. The different marriage candidates are not meant for everyone to reflect real life and that is a major example of why. (More wish that if you married Penny, you really could have that large family in game).

To be fair, a lot of folks see her losing friendship points in the 2-heart scene as her being embarrassed or feeling like you dislike her. Plus, irl, if you call ppl out on things they do wrong, it may sting a bit and they may feel awkward for a while. As for the whole kids thing, depending on how you answer, the points lost aren’t rlly that much. The biggest loss in points you can get in that event is if you decline to be a guest speaker and say you hate kids (which is pretty harsh admittedly, hell, the kids r right there too lol). I see these things as learning experiences for Penny since she seems like she doesn’t get out much. But, everyone experiences the game differently I suppose.

I think the game animation takes that scene out of context. I think the idea of the scene was that George was having difficulty getting his mail, so Penny who was very close by, helped him get it. Almost like holding a door open for someone who has their hands full with groceries.
@overthinkit_
@overthinkit_ Жыл бұрын
@@ominousflames14 There's an issue with that idea, though, and that is that Penny wasn't politely holding a door open and waiting for George to make his way through it. Forgive me if my memory of the scene is a bit foggy, but from what I can remember, Penny notices George struggling, says "let me help you," and then _immediately_ takes hold on his wheelchair, pushes him out of the way, and grabs the mail from the mailbox for him. A wheelchair is a mobility device. Pushing someone's wheelchair is, in abled terms, similar to picking someone up and carrying/dragging them around. The issue isn't that Penny wanted to help, or even assumed George needed help, but that she moved him without his consent. Had she asked beforehand, there would be a lot less to complain about in the scene.

While Penny stays on my friend list, as an absurdly successful farmer I’m happy to help her (and Pam) out where I can. In her scene with George I do criticise and take the loss of points. To me (biased bc I’ve been there) it’s a case of her mistaking niceness for kindness, that she could readily learn from if the game allowed. Beyond that I give her props for trying to help others, even with all the reasons she has to feel inadequate to the task. It’s no small feat for someone to give what they’ve scarcely received. Re bad cooking, I mind the trope less than the social presumption of “the woman does the home cooking” that it builds on 😔 Meanwhile the farmer can instantly make any recipe! (PS Let Penny enjoy poppies, she’s still lucid enough to resist the power of rabbit’s feet 😅)

Penny is my least favorite marriage candidate. It just feels so much to me like she was "planted" in the game for people who want to sweep a poor troubled girl off her feet and give her a happy ending. I've even seen some people say they feel guilty for NOT marrying her! I'd really prefer if she had more of an arc of becoming more confident and self assured, not just becoming singularly obsessed with the farmer and their future family. Maybe she could start a little one-room schoolhouse or something? Idk, her story is depressing if you don't marry her because then she never gets the family she wants, but even if you marry her she still doesn't have any real growth.

Finally, my favorite NPC! Sorry if I get carried away, but I've never had a chance to express my feelings about this character. I'll try to be brief: I don't know why most players that marry Penny choose her. As for me, she was the character that hooked me up from the very beginning... because I too came from a complicated house with drinking and finance problems and fled to fantasy worlds. I too find myself, up until this day unfortunately, dreaming about going somewhere else and starting over with someone good and nice, and discovering what a real family should feel like. I fell in love with this NPC because I felt like she was a well written character, just a really nice person to have around. I've married her in every file faithfully from 2016 up until today, except for my most recent one, because I married a player (uurrg, 3D love, i know, ew) with whom I'm gonna move out shortly and write my own fantasy story 🥰 Oh, I also find it really cool that Penny's dream is to have a big family and just live well and we can help her with that. Most other players just give up on their dreams after marrying and that upsets me. Makes me think I'm being abusive idk.

I find Shane to work better as a regular NPC as opposed to being a marriage candidate, and thinking on that with Penny, it sort of works the same way. Penny was the first person I ever married in stardew (and now the only bachelorette I marry because I want to, not to just see the cutscenes).I had a simillar childhood to Penny and I think that’s what pushed me to give her the bouquet after befriending her and seeing what her life was like. I know that at least I, when I was in a similar situation would’ve wished for someone to come sweep me off my feet, but maybe that’s just me. After you marry her, Penny does seem really happy, and that makes me feel so so happy for her, but at the same time, her schedule doesn’t change much after you marry her, she still teaches Jas and Vincent every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and I feel like that’s a good thing. Marrying Penny doesn’t stop her from achieving her goals- to make sure Jas and Vincent have somewhere to learn and a future ahead of them, and that’s great. The only cutscene I don’t like with her is the one with George, as a person who sometimes has to use a wheelchair (because my legs aren’t strong enough to hold me, I usually use crutches, but when traveling long distances I sometimes use my wheelchair) As you said, Penny did a bad thing by moving George; The wheelchair feels like a part of my body (at least for me) considering it’s there instead of my legs, so imagine just someone dragging you away when you *look* like you need help without asking first I do agree with one thing more than the others- I do really wish we’d see Penny grow more after she leaves Pam and gets married, but again, sadly that’s not how marriage works in Statdew Valley. That’s all sorry for writing paragraphs in the comments- really enjoyed the video!!

@hudsonbakke8836
@hudsonbakke8836 2 ай бұрын
Penny's my absolute favorite. She's clearly sweet and caring but is a victim of circumstance and because of that is never shown any real appreciation for her actions, at least until you come along. Also because of how awkward and fumbling she is (which is also probably due to her life situation), that also leads people to not appreciate her effort, even when it's legitimate. Then, when you finally show her the appreciation she's been lacking, she starts getting attached to you, which makes complete sense. She also just generally seems to become a happier and more confident person as you gain more hearts with her, at least while you're present. Her problems don't disappear, but she's able to deal with them a lot better once someone (you) starts finally treating her like a person and showing appreciation for her. At least for me, I didn't marry her because I wanted to save her. I did it because she's a kind, genuine, and selfless person. Unlike certain other bachelorettes whose names start with an H and end in "ailey," you don't have to coax Penny out of her shell for her to become a good person. *She's already a good person at heart when you meet her*, she just needs more support in order to thrive. Most people only see Penny for the results of her actions. I see Penny for the motives behind those actions. On the cooking part, yes, it's a tired trope of women not being able to cook, but I think there's more to it than just that. The food Penny cooks for you in her 6 heart cutscene is more than edible, in fact, it's quite nutritious, restoring somewhere around 150-200 energy (I don't remember exactly). Far from just being a silly woman who can't cook, this is a metaphor for Penny's whole character. On the outside, the food isn't very appealing based on appearance or even taste. But when you give it a chance and eat it, as bad as it tastes, it actually nourishes you quite a lot. Similarly Penny might not look very enticing on the outside, but if you put in the effort to get closer to her, you'll find that she's a deeply caring and compassionate person, who's deserving of way better than what she receives from everyone else.

Out of all the marriages I've had in SDV, Penny feels the worst to me. At first you'd think that getting her in a better living condition and having a family is everything she wants, but when you get there... well, it's everything she wants. It's like she wants to dissolve as a person to become just a mother. Which is her full right, but at the same time she could be so much more. Ironically, that was the only playthrough in which I had no kids at all, because her eagerness questioned my character's (or my own) commitment. Bottom line: Being married to Penny never made me feel things. Building her and Pam a house did - but you don't need to romance her for that.

So, I think being a mom / homemaker is a valid choice of career path if that is good with her and her chosen partner. If it makes her happy, then that’s awesome! I think the bigger issue is that being a “parent who watches the home and maybe does a part-time thing on the side” is basically what all of the spouses do after marriage in Stardew. So, Penny’s career hopes don’t make her stand out as a candidate in the game, which is probably why it feels like she doesn’t have anything more to her.

What are you talking about? There's literally a heart event telling you "hey, this is the best bachelorette if you share her goals of building a family" (Will say sweet things about how a happy family you are), just as Abigail one says "This bachelorette is the one to go is you like exploring the mines" (will give you literally bombs for breakfast). I completely agree with the flaws of post marriage but that's a complain that can be attributed to every single other marriable npc. No one goes deeper than those character traits, no one move on, no one improves out a pseudo-"break your shell" character development that goes nowhere after you divorced them. I agree with your perspective on her, but it seems unfair to me that you don't recognized this very same flaw in all the other characters which you enjoyed.

Penny was my first, and still is my favourite spouse. But I do find it somewhat disappointing that she has one of the least interesting 14 heart scenes. Something that builds upon and maybe even resolves her relationship with Pam would be so much better for her than randomly decorating one room of your house.

I unfortunately relate to Penny a little closely. I apologize a lot but I am trying not to. Even my therapist has pointed out my apologizing as a thing I should try to do less and I am trying but it's a conditioned response from my childhood. I can't stop it anymore than I can stop the fear from taking over when people get angry and throw things across the room. I mean that doesn't happen very often but when it does it takes me all the way back to those days and I get trapped in my own fear for a good solid ten minutes. My therapist tells me that with trauma comes actual brain changes that lead to the fear response and conditioned responses and they are not easy to get rid of. But she is helping me to cope with them as much as possible. Honestly I wish I could just stop apologizing but it's so ingrained now that I might not be able to change it or lessen it. I keep trying to change it though, I hate having to apologize for existing.

I very much understand what the game was going for especially when it comes to the meal Penny makes. It's called being polite & encouraging. I think the "do you want kids" question options are...very poorly done. There's no "Maybe not right now." at best you could do is the "No I don't think I'd be good at it." The other 2 options are such deal breakers for players and obviously the last one stings personally for Penny. It's one of things that sometimes the game devs don't always think of & kind of rail road the player, (this games in Bioware games like Dragon Age or Starwars Kotor) where you get the strangest of options and where sometimes you can't let them down easy, it's either "Yes I'll marry you" or "PIss off creep." There's no in between. Sometimes it's just not as intuitive as we players would like.

Penny act very passionately and unbothered of saying what she feels like about something, and sometimes have these awkward moments, but really, anyone here does'nt?? Getting intimately along with someone is very trial and error, as no one knows to not be awkward from birth, and it's not something you get to learn by simply watching people, awkward moments *will* happen, and hopefully you will feel weird about it, because that's how we learn social behavior. My thoughts about Penny are that she might've got along with this weird sensation, and really care more about expressing herself, be it talking or actions. Sure, I guess Penny atitude concerning George wasn't the best, and we can't properly see Penny's development in this regard, as the way the unmodded game progression is modeled, it doesnt give the appropriate room/time for the characters to reflect deeper about themselves and develop their personalities further. All of this said, y'know, when we are falling in love with someone, part of what we're in love with are reflections of ourselves. Maybe, those who get along with Penny, in some way, are dealing with their own social awkwardness expressing their feelings.

I like the traditional vibes. I think the george scene is blown out of proportion. They are neighbors and know each other. Its a small loss of friendship to say hey dont do that because her feelings are hurt jist like anyone else. You try to do a good thing and guess what people are mad at you because you did it wrong you will shut down. She works hard wants kids loves kids some call it boring but id rather have a wife then a gamer acholic artist etc. Sticks to the traditional vaules i like.

Penny is one of the townsfolk I just don't interact with and that's because I married her once and felt how she kind of went stagnant. So since then, I kinda just don't go out of my way. She's on the level of Sam for me in regards to interest, which, sadly, isn't that high. If it was possible to help her get her own living situation and independence somewhere in the future, I probably would do the 8 hearts for her. But since that's not a thing, I'll just make do with saying 'hi' whenever I'm at the library.

This video made me want to ship Penny and Elliott xD Elliott, he is quite childish and stubborn, and yet, he is very very independent, and was courageous enough to leave his place and live on his own, I think he would mesh well with Penny in the way that they would have a lot of conversations about books, and they both have this flare of pretending they are on some other universe than real life xD Except Eliott shows it out, and Penny internalizes it, Elliott could make her express her fantasies out a little more and in a safe space too xD I think penny would be admiring Elliott's resolve to quit his home to pursue the life he dreams of. And she would bring a little more order into his life. Hm ACTUALLY IT DOESN'T NECESSARILY HAVE TO BE A ROMANTIC THING WHY AREN'T THEY FRIENDS THEY WOULD BE BEST FRIENDS

I think the reason why saying you don't want kids only drops you by 10 points. Is because you're being honest. Well, at least she sees it as being honest. You're not ready for marriage and kids, whereas her father pretended he was happy for years before deciding to split.

I like how this game is a bit more complex than it appears at a glance. It can have some surprisingly deep moments. I do agree though a bit, I do kinda wish the story of the wife/husband continued a bit after marriage. But as it is, it’s still fairly good, and I admittedly don’t mind too much that not all the characters change a lot. I would like it if that happened, but it’s not something that I feel it absolutely needs.
