After Putin's attacks on Ukraine, the US White House, the EU and much of the rest of the world hit Russia with strong sanctions targeting their access to key technologies and the global financial system. From chip imports to SWIFT, the sanctions are hard and many companies also decided to pull out. Will they work?

I work in IT consulting company in Russia. Worked on projects in currently sanctioned big bank. All databases are on Oracle, analytics and other system- on SAP. Oracle and SAP have stopped IT support. Needless to say my colleagues from IT department in this bank are in panic mod. Such huge IT environment can't be maintained without 24/7 support from IT providers. Soon it will start to crash. P.S. My company is western based and closes it's office in Moscow. In 2 moths I will be unemployed. 500 out of 2000 employees agreed for relocation ANYWHERE from Russia. Me as well. Specialist exodus from Putin's Russia is going to be enormous.

@Bri Ba There was a reason why German and Italian regimes were not overthrown by there own people during WW2. Putin's Russia is hyper-repressive these days. Any act of protest, or even the lack of active support for this war (they force school kids and students into pro-war flashmobs, and expel those who don't want to), will have harsh consequence. Sadly to say, but everything is in hands of "Ukrainian IT workers in camo and holding AKs". Longer they stand up - faster Putin regime will crash.

If it takes 3 months to make a complicated chip (a figure I vaguely recall reading somewhere recently) and you stop taking orders from Russia because of sanctions, then even when the sanctions end and you start taking orders again, they're going to be waiting a further 3 months to get any chips. What might be a 6-month set of sanctions in general might turn into a 9-month one for chips, just due to manufacturing complexity.

Me as well. 20 years. Not sure what field in the industry that you are, I am Technology Operations. So hardware does fail. But not across the board on all devices that are linked to one another. This is why you would set up Parity and Redundancy among the most important Cloud. My last job was in a massive hospital, and current at the top 3 banks in the US. Our systems are so redundantly reinforced there is never a milisecond of outage time. The possibility of 100x devices backing up data and configurations I couldn't tell you. I do know in my enviroments, downtime doesn't happen due to hardware or software problems. The IaaS takes over. Which could be anywhere in the world. As is physical data centers. Given that implementation, there is PLENTY of months even to get what you need to replace a node in the architecture. I'd like to hear your thoughts.

I'd like to add on your point at around 8:00. The Chip blockage is far far far more devistating as you think. I've worked as an embedded software dev for 20 years and those chips usage goes far beyond than most people think here are just some I've worked on. Chips in gasstations, sewages, waterplants, oilplants, food production etc etc etc. Everything which is somewhat automated/remote controlled with logics in place is royally fucked to put it lightly. It won't even take 1 year until major consequences are beginning to appear in normal peoples life. Fresh water, gas and food will get wracked sooner or later as everything requires modern chips these days. I'am really interested in the way the russians are gonna deal with it. Even us without any trade restrictions had problems the last 3 years due to the semiconductor shortages especially in embedded fields. sry that my grammar sucks hard, but I really wanted to make clear how depended a modern civilization is from these chips. The most basic infrastracture is dependend on it. a little edit for further info. The lowest russian semiconductors got around 130~ nm. They've claimed to produce 90nm but that one never came to light so most likely a propaganda hoax.

You are 100% correct my friend. General purpose chips have insinuated themselves into almost all business. This is why people do not understand the situation in Taiwan. It would be insane for the world to allow China to destroy the largest and most advanced chip maker in the world. Like the Chi-Coms did to the Hong Kong business, they would do the same to Taiwan if they were allowed to. That would cause the tech world to completely collapse. And that would cause a world-wide industrial collapse and thus world wide DEPRESSION.

Russia, the largest nation on earth, has access to huge natural resources, and an educated, scientifically literate population, and yet its economy is reliant on commodities such as energy and minerals, and ordinary citizens have a relatively low standard of living. The only people who make money are the oligarchs, and they hoard it to themselves, investing in Western economies and assets, and educating their children in the UK and Americ. Putin himself has become incredibly wealthy by stamping down the aspirations of the people he supposedly represents, and has salted away the proceeds with his billionaire friends. For twenty years he has looked backwards with nostalgia to the Soviet era, and he has kept Russia facing in the same direction, while lining his own pockets very deeply. Russia, which once held its own in the space race, has fallen further and further behind the West, and been overtaken by China, and the other rising economies in the East. The only thing he has invested in consistently is the military, and now we see that even that is not as effective as he supposed. He's let his country down very badly, if they did but know it. However he still has enormous potential to do damage - a nuclear weapon can still get by on 75 year old technology, after all. He's signed his own fate now, but who will he take down with him?

This includes food safety (think testing for toxic chemicals on food), petroleum and chemical industry, pharmaceutical industry, medical diagnostics (especially due to some acquisitions in the past decade in cell analysis and CRISPR technology), and chemical and biology research. On March 2, our CEO announced two things. First, we are halting shipments of all equipment except diagnostics and health care to Russia. And limiting in-country service of already deployed equipment to existing diagnostics and healthcare customers. Second, our cheritable foundation is donating $100k to relief organizations supporting the Ukraniran people, and are providing 1:1 corporate matching for employees donating to similar organizations. Over the last month, I have watched the war in Ukraine and what I have seen was discussing behavior from a major power. I have served most of my life as a combat soldier in Canada and toured a lot of ex Warsaw pack countries over my career. These countries broke away from Russia because they wanted freedom to live as they choose. As a soldier, I spent 2 years in war torn country of the former Yugoslavia and witnessed war crimes very similar to the atrocities I am seeing in Ukraine by the Russians today. I seen the ethics of Russian militants in the past first hand and I can tell you that every report I see is the true fingerprint of a communist Russia. I have seen mass graves and the aftermath of rapes and pillaging, (ethnic cleansing) and I can honestly say that it has made a dent in my life as a Canadian. Russia will not stop there they will take Ukraine and then Poland/Baltic states. They will attempt to take Finland and Czechoslovakia if we do not act now. Russia will not stop. NATO must put the foot down or they will walk all over Eastern Europe free as they please. I have trained to fight Russians most of my career and if I can give a word of advice to all who are fighting there now, shoot the Russian officers and unit commanders/NCO, s and the fight is over. The average Soviet soldier is not trained to lead; they will be demoralized with no direction. As much as I hate war, I am a defender of freedom and the freedom of my children. To the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy I take my hat off to you. If I were younger and my children allowed me to I be there fighting right next to you. Forget the worthless currency, non-working credit cards, inflation, layoffs, rapid depopulation, brain drain, etc. It's dependence on foreign expertise, financing and parts for virtually every industry will prove fatal. Western expertise and capital was integral to oil and gas production. Without spare parts tanks, planes, cars, cells, computers, servers and generators can't be fixed. Communications can't be fixed. The now-common sight of abandoned broken down weaponry will become the norm. And in 4 weeks / months when the money dries up how will they pay for the war?

The really interesting part is just the small inefficiencies that get randomly created. Business has a will of its' own and will always move towards being more and more efficient. The more pieces you remove, just means every little business action becomes less efficient and therefore more expensive and it compounds. Even the things Russia still can do on its' own, will now be more expensive..at a time when the Ruble is down almost 40%. Currency getting less valuable, and at the same time every business function getting more expensive. And Russia is not like the USA who can basically print money to get through a trying time, Russia can't just print money because the overall pool of Rubles is magnitudes of order less than the USD.

First of all, now we know that commodities like oil, fertilizer, LNG, and uranium from russia beats the chip makers. For sure you can't make chips without oil. Pretty decent analysis, thank you. I do think there's a chance that we may underestimate Russia's pivot from western products and services in 'some' sectors, to those of China (some tech, cars, etc), India (some software and services), and other non-sanctioning countries, although of course these can't completely fill the vacuum. Also don't forget that Russia's energy exports to south Asia and east Asia will continue (and likely expand), and keep some (lower -than-before) amount revenue coming in. The other thing is that, although emotions and media scrutiny are running high now, making Brand reputation strategy (to cancel Russian contracts) the priority for large international companies/suppliers, when events on the ground stabilize in a few months time, some of these channels may quietly open up again.

If you look at China, or India, or even most of ASEAN / Africa, their local media and attitudes are hugely in support of Russia (in sharp contract to their official diplomatic stances). Many Indians and Chinese are urging their companies to jump into Russia to fill in the market gap left vacant by the West. Of course the business reality is nowhere that simple as fast expansion has huge logistics issues even without sanctions involved. But it certainly gives you a feel for the atmosphere. There will be a lot of people willing to pass the Russians even "forbidden goods" in some secret manner while looking the other way.

Saying that Putin's foreign reserves were frozen is true but also undersells just how unprecedented this is. Never before has the central bank of a G20 economy been heavily sanctioned, and iirc the only central banks the US has ever directly sanctioned were North Korea, Venezuela, and Iran, all absolutely tiny economies compared to Russia. Not only that, but the largest proportion of his reserves were not in dollars, but in Euros, with Putin betting that Western European economies highly dependent on Russian energy exports would not join in the sanctions, which, at first, they didn't. If the invasion had lasted just a couple days like Putin seems to have planned, this strategy would have worked perfectly. Besides, the whole reason you invest in foreign assets for your war chest is to *protect the value of the ruble.* When the ruble starts to fall you sell off your foreign currencies and exchange them for rubles to keep the price up. The real question here isn't why Putin thought foreign assets would help his economy, it's why we're in week 3 of what everyone else thought would be a 3 day war. How did not only US intelligence but Putin himself so heavily overestimate the Russian military?

Intelligence has never been his strong suit. Ruthlessness is his claim to fame. Take away his nukes, assassinations of any who oppose him internally, as well as his backing by the Russian mafia and oligarchs and he'd have been outplayed and gone long ago. We're talking about someone whose foreign policy has simply been to see which side the US takes and then take the other...regardless of the effect of those decisions on his country. That doesn't exactly require much thought. Edit: Also, he thought this invasion was a good idea...even after decades of funneling military funding into his and his buddies private bank accounts leaving them without proper funding for maintenance. Then he wonders why his tanks can't go five miles without breaking down and his air power is so unreliable compared to his peer's. Then, there's his foolish reliance on conscript troops and brutal tactics which lower the morale of the soldiers who have to carry them out. Back in the day, the Soviet army had Commissars to deal with the morale issue. Now they have to use high command and get them killed at a ridiculously high rate by having to go to the front and crack the whip themselves.

But Have they taken full credit ? - answer is yes. With Chinese economy slowing due to bad terms with others, other starting to pull out there resources, their bad one child policy ie a shrinking working class people. Historically all dictatorship collapse by public is done when the times turns bad and still their behaviour don't change. If thing are getting better general public will tolerate more and more but when things start to turn bad even earlier level of tolerance start to be less. In your preview of your Technorama channel, you speak of Ada Lovelace and the Analytical Engine - "the computer with cogs and wheels". It was not conceived by Ada Lovelace - it was conceived and partly built by Charles Babbage, who didn't even get a mention in your comment. He demonstrated parts of the machine to her when they met in 1833. Ada was the daughter of the poet Lord Byron, but she had studied mathematics, and was very interested in the concepts of the analytical engine (as the computer was called), and is hailed as the world's first programmer. It was made for mathematical analysis of numeric problems, such as statistics, finance, etc, but Ada, more imaginativew than Babbage, was the first to see deeper possiblities of using it for anaysis of shapes and objects, such as topology and musical composition. The scientific computer language, Ada, was named after her. Babbage was not a good man manager, could not hold staff, and never completed the analytical engine. It was later built from his plans, and an example of it can be seen in the Science Museum in London.
