Against AKI I try to maintain a midrange distance, just outside her whip usually. A bit like Chun you really can’t let her get too much space or she gets the chance to fireball and can just walk behind or drive rush behind it, which either nets her a ton of screen space, an easy anti-air if you try to jump, or a free mix. You stay relatively close so both her whip and fireball (which is very slow) are vulnerable to jump-ins and DI. And yes IMO YOLO DI is a good strategy in this matchup, at least throw it out once so it’s added to her mental stack, otherwise she’ll just dominate neutral with her big buttons and fireballs. Ryu is best off letting her dictate the pace of the match, just focusing on cornering her and occasionally sniping fireball/whip startups with your jumps/di. Even a heavy tatsu isn’t a terrible idea sometimes if you know she’ll always drive rush behind a fireball. Denjin helps a lot bc you can on-reaction answer her fireball startup with a quicker fireball with more hits. It is a bad matchup IMO, the ryu has to really know what to do.

I saw 5, they all lost miserably. All videos on YT be like "OMG RYU AND HIS DAMAGE ARE TIER OMEGA WOW", but when the big boys and the big tournaments arrive, people will choose any character over Ryu. That's pretty telling lmao

Yeah ryu is fine for ranked but once the top dogs get in there ryu has no chance!

In the world there are only few good ryus they don’t pass 10-15 players. Only one of them entered evo What do you expect statistically the outcome would be?! And paladin got top 16 in last ceo. So ryu is good if in top player hands. He just didn’t do well at evo.

Justin Wong plays modern... he had a reality show like thing that he hosted and one of the three finalists was a modern player. Certainly the reaction times are far shorter for modern in regard to super for characters like Zangief.

what i hate most about modern controls is the reaction time, im completely okay with newbies using inputs at the press of a button while also having a damage reduction, but like i just cant jump against modern cuz i know ill get dp everytime. it would be nice if they added some frames of lag on startup on modern but i do admit im still new to streetfighter so idk much.

Aki imo is probably top 3. Any scrub can do a 24 hit combo with her. You're just sitting there waiting for it to end and then next thing you know you get thrown. The poison skews the animations so a lot of her attacks just seem invisible to me. They over buff'd her in season 2. Aki and Bison are the only two characters right now that give me the "Way too OP" feeling. Ken is still borderline there.

I think what you’re saying about modern controls applies a little more at higher ranks. When you’re first learning the game or are in lower ranks it’s really annoying losing to people who can mash one button and get a consistent combo into level 3. Im fine with one buttons supers/specials, but I think assist combos plague lower ranks where people can’t do combos consistently.
