I discuss with Prof. Anandaroop Bhattacharya the prospects of science graduates for industrial jobs. Currently, a faculty member in the Mechanical Engineering Department at IIT Kharagpur and formerly senior professional at Intel, General Motors, General Electric, Prof. Bhattacharya has had a unique combination of extensive experience in both industry and academia.
This video will be followed by other video(s) containing further discussions on industrial jobs and how to approach industrial job interviews.

Hello Sir, I am a post doc in IIT Madras. I did BS MS in physics from IISER Kolkata and did a PhD in Optics from Ecole Normale Sueprieure in France. I want to become a faculty in either IIT or NIT in India. I want to know about the roles played by the following points when I will apply for a faculty position in these institutes. 1. Publication record (on an average how many and what impact factor) 2. Recommendation (necessities to have worked with influential scientists in India and their recommendation) 3. Diversity of research (is it an advantage to have worked on different or interdisciplinary topics) 4. Research experience (is it necessary to have worked in research at least 3 years after PhD, or is it required to have foreign post doc experience) 5. Age (will I be judged on my age, for example will it be difficult if my age is above 35 to get a position ) 6. Topic of research ( is it necessary to pick research topics that are "hot", like quantum technologies, machine learning, etc). Can you please make a video and share your point of views highlighting the importance of these criteria?

Hello Dr Chatterjee! Thanks for asking some very important questions. I am actually thinking of making such a video. However, please do note that my viewpoint will be somewhat based on my experiences in engineering and, to an extent, applied mathematics (my postdoc was in applied mathematics). However, I can tell you one thing for certain that your publication record is the number one factor. Since you are in Physics, it will be a tremendous boost if you have had publications in some of the most respected journals (PRL, Physical Review A, B, etc., APL, JAP, J Phys. Cond. Matt. and so on). Regarding age, unfortunately, there is a strictness regarding that 35 age limit. If you can put in your application before you turn 35, you will be safe (doesn't matter if you are 35+ at the time of presentation and interview).

3:10 I am positively surprised that a professor brings up such serious problems, solutions and current research in a general discussion. Most engineers do not know that the old "soldering lead" is actually tin-lead alloy, and to avoid lead poisoning, the new soldering material is lead-free SAC alloy and still research going on many such fundamental and serious problems. There are a lot of opportunities,100s of problems need to be solved, and thousands of useful and safe products need to be created. Environmental protection itself will create millions of jobs. If the students think fixing bugs for amazon and google and using ML to distinguish dogs from cats are challenging problems to solve, they do not know what real problems are. In 10 years, you will not have safe drinking water; no facebook and whatsApp chatting can help you, perhaps real science and engineering can.

True. AI and ML does have uses in hard core engineering problems too. Especially in very messy kind of situations where classical modelling may perhaps be able to capture only a part of the picture (I am personally old school and still do classical modeling in my actual research work). And, people do need to understand the difference between being a technology consumer and being a technology creator (I think you had yourself mentioned this earlier).

Sir as I am studying mechanical engineering more deeply, I think it is more like physics especially in the topics like fluid dynamics and heat transfer and turbulence . Your views

You are right. Those subjects have a distinctively close to physics. So also elasticity. Additionally, you will find a great number of applied mathematicians working on fluid mechanics and solid mechanics problems. In fact, I did my own postdoctoral research in applied mathematics departments.

Hello, I'm not the right person to answer this, but one thing I can say is age doesn't restrict to from learning nor does the degree you have opted. Watching my fellow mates i have seen them working in these areas although they are from mechanical engineering. So start with programming and some languages. C,c++ and python are best for beginners. Python agin is used a lot in machine learning etc. There are number of nptel courses (for theoretical understanding.) Watch them and try to implement these on your own. Find some simple mini project ideas and try to implement it. If you can spend money on courses use some Coursera, edx material. Also there are some other platforms which minimise the burden and each you everything from beginning.

You can try starting off with NPTEL courses, along with their certification exams.

I'm the right person I'm leaning nlp under guidance of industry experienced people First decide and get all in People will throw buzz words like iot, etc Other will say it is hype But I will not All are good on one condition U must select one and go all in It will atleast take 1 yr to achieve significant understanding and designing ml ai products Follow Coursera and KZbin

I think IISERs are best option for people interested in Science. Both in terms of research and guidance in Scientific career. I think there is less rat race and more research oriented mindset as compare to IITs.

Sir, thank you a lot for this video. You might even not know how many physics students will benefit (or atleast get some insight) from this. PhD or being a professor may not be for everyone who pursues a Masters in Physics. But once we are enrolled in an MSc, almost all routes seem to have closed.
