@michellejensen40904 жыл бұрын
Those are 2 different kinds of venom, and you may not be allergic to bees. I'm a novice beekeeper and allergic to bees (found out after a few stings - I wasn't being careful enough), but I'm not allergic to yellowjackets. Get an allergy test to find out, and just take your precautions. Get a good suit that the bees can't sting through, some good leather gloves and boots/shoes that cover your ankles. If you live in a place where wearing boots is just too hot, you can add a couple of buttons to the bottoms of each pant leg of your suit and button some elastics down under your feet so that your suit goes over the edge of your shoes. Letting bees sting the crap out of you is not smart, since allergies can be developed over time - be smart and be safe :-)
@davidkirkman22234 жыл бұрын
Michael I am on a wait list now to be tested to see how or what vemon I had the reaction from . I have a full length suit and Vail head covering but I think I am a little gunshy because of this recent issue. I am going to start to wear my bee suit while I retrieve the items I was going for at the house. I guess I was maybe in wrong place at wrong time.lol
@michellejensen40904 жыл бұрын
@@davidkirkman2223 I hear you!...I've been working minimally with my bees since my reactions worsened, but speaking with my allergist has put my mind somewhat at ease. LOL...you are always in the wrong place at the wrong time, if you are at the end of a yellowjackets pointy end ;-) I don't know what kind of suit you have, or what kind are available where you live...but if you have a more serious reaction to bee stings (even locally), you will want to look into the suits that bees cannot penetrate with their stings. The standard cotton or cotton/poly blend just don't cut it. More often than not, the kind you want is also more breathable, and thus far more comfortable either in hot weather, or when you need to have more layers underneath and sweat can dissipate. My season is just about over where I live in Denmark, but I plan to have one of those suits when the new season starts

I'm allergic to bees now too. Never was before in my whole life until I started keeping bees and I still keep bees. I did try to do a removal that went sideways this past year and got excessively stung (around 15 stings and mostly to the head and neck) but I didn't go into anaphylaxis but did break out into hives and almost went to the hospital. A high dose of Benadryl got me back to normal thankfully. I'll always keep bees but now I just have to be more careful and take my time and make sure to use smoke to keep everything calm. Keep doing what you're doing Mr. Ed, we newbies appreciate it!

@@khills yes ma'am that's the goal. Only they are extremely expensive without insurance and I'm hoping to change that soon. For now I just take my time, haven't been stung in months because I know my own bees pretty well and am around them daily so they have my smell pretty well down.
@khills4 жыл бұрын
@@subsy83 I feel ya on the insurance, mate. Definitely ask if there are generics - they cost about $900 less than the epipens did when my insurance decided to be surly about the cost. And there's a GoodRx article on EpiPens, generics, and alternatives that include coupon codes to help knock the price down even further. (I have gone into anaphylaxis and wouldn't wish that on anyone else, so I can be pretty fervent in the whole GET YOU AN EPIPEN TO LOVE thing. 😉 ) But as I was commenting to Jeff elsewhere, hopefully the stings lessen your overall risk of arthritis, at least? Thank you so much for your concern. Everything at the abbey and the area around us is fine, Hurricane Laura was over 100 miles west of us. It was the strongest hurricane to hit Louisiana's coast in over a hundred years, about 150 mph winds. It will be weeks before many have power restored. Please keep all these folks in your prayers. God's peace. Mr. Ed

It is great that the experienced bee keepers do help out and pass down their knowledge to bee keepers just getting into the hobby. More bee keepers more bees can be saved from destruction. That was a pretty impressive size hive those bees had there . Mr Ed with your hair cut short like that and a clean shaven face I hardly recognized you . Thank you for creating and posting this video. Stay safe and God Bless you all .

New Orleans such a historic town to do a bee removal. Do the bees in New Orleans eat crawfish?
@JeffHorchoff4 жыл бұрын
Most bees prefer shrimp and crabs. God's pece Don. Mr. Ed

Jeff Horchoff Bees, I prefer Shrimp and Crab also!!! If I eat a crawfish it’s going to be the tail only! No way will I suck out everything out of a crawfish shell. I know exactly what the saltwater does that they are washed in before they are boiled. I spent a little time in Butte La Rose in my younger years enjoyed a lot of crawfish boils and they thought that I was wasteful because I only ate the meat out of the tail.

@@JeffHorchoff Mr. Ed, thank you for your blessing! I just started watching your show. I started watching it because I am terrified of bees, and I thought watching your show would help me overcome my fear! So watching how they are around you, and how very little times you get stung does give my comfort with them. Thank you! God has shown me that this fear is a hindrance in my life. Now, I don't want to start a beehive, but I don't want to be afraid of them anymore anymore and you are definitely helping me achieve that goal. Thanks, and many blessings be apon you for that! 🤟💚☘

Wonderful how you shared your experience with a new beekeeper. Love the bee wrangling tee shirt & hat. Week two of not getting notification of your video upload. Last week I unsubscribed, re-subscribed, and clicked the bell again. That did not fix the problem. Lots more ads during videos. Oh KZbin!!! Not sure if you can do anything to change things, but wanted to make you aware. Take care, stay safe, and God bless.

When I was a kid my dad took my brothers and I to a place that I can't remember were, but they had a glass beehive in there store. It had alot of bee's. They were able to get out to do bee stuff, and a place in the bottom of the hive so they could get some of the honey right there in the store. It was so interesting because a person could see the bee's working inside the glass. It was a huge hive. If I remember clearly it was clear to the ceiling. Maybe 3 ft. wide/thick. Have you ever thought about creating one in the store. It would be very interesting for others to be able to see it from behind the glass. It was glass on every part. And could be seen from 4 directions. If I'm wrong about the size it would be because I was 9 or 10 years old, and everything looks enormous at that age. I'm l52 right know so it was along time ago.

It's nice to sit back and run the video and be an advisor for a change. Enjoyed the New Orleans drive around. Such a pretty city with lots of rich history. Nice one handed queen catcher - awesome sauce! lol Good information on the allergies. When I first started, I'd swell up pretty good with a sting, but now it's like a mosquito bite, but it still stings! I hope I don't develop an allergy like he did, he's a brave man. Thanks for the video. Take care Mr. Ed.

I was trying to get the feel of how the Rooster does a cut out, and you know what, I like it. New Orleans certainly has diversity, and history. After being born and raised there, I'm very familiar with it. Using my fingers to catch the queen is my go to method now, very little chance of harming her. Thanks for watching. God's peace D. Mr. Ed

Another awesome video! I have a question Jeff. There's a park near me with a bee hive inside a water meter cavity. It's on the ground and about 2'x3'. They look like honey bees. If I tell the municipality I know they'll just exterminate the hive. 1. Is there any easy way I can identify these as honey bees? and 2. Is there a simple and cost effective bee house I can propose to municipality to use in the local trees to give these local bees a better home? This park is one of very few natural near-water sources of land for bees in a mostly suburban area. Thanks for all you do!
@JeffHorchoff4 жыл бұрын
It is very common to have honey bees take up residence in a water meter. If you are interested in trying to relocate these bees, and I'm pretty sure that's what they are, I would suggest contacting your county agent and asking if they can put you in touch with a local bee keeper who has the means to go about rescuing these bees. I could be wrong, but municipalities are more concerned with the bottom line than rescuing bees. I wish you and the bees success, let me know how things turn out. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

Good morning, Mr. Ed, glad to watch you wrangle bees while I sip my morning coffee. Good job on that removal to the beginner beekeeper--like a boss! That's a fascinating story about the allergy thing, I'm allergic as well and didn't know you could be "de-sensitized" like that. Fascinating! Oh, and just letting you know my beautiful new rosary has arrived, and is hanging right next to me as I type. I love it! God's blessing on you beekeepers, doing God's work caring for these fascinating little creatures.
