That's right guys, whoever is thinking about learning Spanish, know that you will be able to understand and communicate with Portuguese speakers, specially Brazilian Portuguese. But here's the issue: You will not understand many words but those that you do, it will give you the sense of what the conversation is about. Also, you will have to ask the Portuguese speaker to speak slower than usual. I'm Mexican and never learned/studied Portuguese but I'm able to understand most of the words and that's enough to know what the other is talking about. ✌🏼✌🏼✌🏼

I realize now, through learning spanish that I've aquired a bonus language in Portugese. It's a challenge to understand it. But with some listening excercises it should be a easy enough.
@aethelash19 сағат бұрын
You should also try Italian. It's not that hard if you already speak Spanish. I'm from Argentina and I can understand a lot of it if it is not spoken too fast. And no, I've never learned it and I don't speak it. What I did was: 1) Learn some everyday words that come from unalike roots like "volere" meaning "to need" (Sp. "necesitar" but French "vouloir"), "cattivo" meaning "bad" (Sp. "malo"), "mela" meaning "apple" (Sp. "manzana"), "imparare" meaning "to learn" (Sp. "aprender"), and so on. 2) Learn the sounds, how they are written and the main unalikenesses between Spanish and Italian. It'll be even better if you learn about the main sound shifts from Classical Latin to today's Italian and Spanish, but you don't need to do that if you don't want to or if you think it'll be too hard. 3) Listen to Italian speakers every now and then so I don't forget what I've learnt. And I can learn a bit more along the way! By the way, be aware that spoken French is a lot harder than Italian and Portuguese since it has shifted more than the other Romance tungs. However, there are a lot of French loanwords in today's English so maybe that and your Spanish can help you to understand some written French too. As far as I know, Romanian has shifted a lot too and has Slavic sway. But I've never listened to it carefully so I don't know. And last but not least, be aware that spoken Brazilian Portuguese is a lot easier to understand than spoken European Portuguese. Good luck!
