When my French Canadian friend was here visiting in Texas, no one could understand her accent when we went through a drive-thru. One day she got frustrated and gave her best attempt at a strong southern accent and they got every word!

Southern accents. When I first moved here in 1982, I used to smile at people talking to me, then ask my husband what they said!

When my (Northern born and raised) husband and I went to visit relatives in Kentucky and Arkansas, I became his official interpreter. The first time that we visited them, he still had most of his Northeast (Connecticut) accent....... and.... he would get this response after he would talk to strangers (in their areas): “Yah ain’t from round these parts..” or “From the North, ain’t ya”.

Guys, there are two "port scans". On is for a deep water shipping lane. The other is for cancer patients on chemotherapy. When they pump you full of chemo, it goes through a "port" implanted under your skin leading to your heart which then pumps the meds throughout your body. Things like blood clots and such can block a port, so they have to "scan" it with ultrasound to make sure it's fine.

Even when I try my best to suppress my accent, voice apps never understand me. I can't tell you how many of those business phone answer machines I've ended up hollering at. That poor woman who recorded all those terrible things must feel bad for alienating so many people from businesses.

Siri is bad. Those ones that businesses use should be banned under the Geneva convention.

I live in St. Louis, Missouri, which has been called the northern most Southern city, and the western most Eastern city. Several years ago, I watched as a friend of mine who's a native St. Louisan "translate" between someone from northern Georgia and someone from Vermont.

What frustrates me the most is, it aint like there’s not a lot of us. More people live in the south than any other region of the US. Over 100 million people. But it can understand a Australian person or something and there are only like 25 million of them.
