it's crazy because i watched princess mononoke for the first time the other day and as i was watching it i had a sudden lightbulb moment about the similarities between it and both breath of the wild and tears of the kingdom, the superpowered arm, the prince with long hair wearing blue exploring the wilds and helping people, the koroks as well, it was cool to see where those ideas came from

The more inspiration it can take from Princess Mononoke the better. Such a beautiful and classic film. As for Link’s arm I wonder if that green energy is less healing his arm and more sealing the malice. If they want to draw from Mononoke then could have part of the journey being the need to heal Link’s arm before the malice poisoning his arm breaks free from that green sealing energy.

I appreciate the lack of leaks ‘cause leaks either result in one of two-three things: -somebody is fired over NDA or risks getting fired because servers got hacked -entire work gets scrapped in favor of so-called Spoiler Free Shockvalue Culture (moreso an issue with films and animation, and sometimes books, but I can see it becoming a “solution” trend in games) Or -the leaks are all fake red herrings by trolls or the company itself to try and keep the actual information leaked It ain’t classy. Somebody inevitably gets hurt with leaks and the art ultimately gets ruined to some degree

I would prefer if they didn't use any more of Ghibli. Unless Nintendo agrees to make games for Studio Ghibli's properties (which while awesome would be problematic since half of those stories themselves come from a now dead author), isn't Zelda supposed to be its own thing? To me this is already a bit too much to take from something that isn't part of a religion, culture, or history. I mean before this the most they've ever taken from a single story was King Arthor, right? (Or maybe LotR?) Unless you can tell me the name of the first story to have magic, wizards, goblins, cyclops, elves, and/or undead. Granted I can't say my opinion is better than yours, it's just how I feel.

Studio Ghibli is not a synonym of Hayao Miyazaki movies. Why is this idea so difficult to understand. Studio Ghibli is an animation studio. It is a company that has done and does what it is paid to do. It has made feature films, tv-movies, tv-shows, short films, commercials, has work to made video games and other things. There is no "Studio Ghibli something...". If people are talking about Hayao Miyazaki's movies then talk about Hayao Miyazaki's movies. He is the person from whose mind all the magic, beauty, adventure, happiness, sadness and wonder in his films has come from. Give respect to Hayao Miazaki. He truly deserves it, not a company that has just animated his movies. This videos title should be: 'Can Hayao Miyazaki's films tell us the story of Tear of the Kingdom?'. :)

I could see an ending where instead of killing Ganondorf the old fashion way, they sort of exorcise him instead. Like, you have the final battle as usual, but the final cutscene involves Link and Zelda somehow releasing Ganondorf from his malice and allowing him to pass on without reincarnating. I mean, at this point he's coming across less like a tyrant king and more like a vengeful spirit/deity. Maybe taking that approach would be appropriate from both a practical and thematic standpoint.

Something really interesting, at least to me, is that in Mononoke, Ahistaka's tribe is heavily inspired in the Ainu, an ethnic group native to Japan and Russia. DNA studies has determined they originated in Siberia. The interesting part is, studies of indigenous tribes in the americas has determined they also likely originated from Siberia. So basically TOTK has aesthetics inspired by cultures in two different corners of the world that had one common origin.
@kacperwoch4368
@kacperwoch4368 Жыл бұрын
Common Siberian origin... over 25,000 years ago. While Ainu could be considered one culture, native Americans are not one culture or one people. Your observation is interesting but almost certainly unintentional on Nintendo's part.

Hey Zeltik, the connections to the Aztec creation mythos and 5 suns might be an interesting read for you. BotW Malice is really similar to the Aztec idea about the nature of the earth and their belief about how the earth must be appeased but while appeased serves the Aztec gods is extremely reminiscent of what I think is happening with Gannondorf. Plus Zonai architecture looks extremely pre colonial meso/south american. See I think Gannondorf is being Siphoned for magical power, the Sheikah tech was being powered by this pilfered might, hence why we hear that it has been acting up at the end of BotW. This also fits nicely into the basic concept of the 5 suns, Hyrule has used this siphon system to change the cycle of Gannondorf's attacks from every few hundred years to every ten thousand because it takes him longer to gather enough strength for an escape attempt but the near escape in the age of calamity led to the siphon seal breaking at the end of BotW and his slow release there after. Maybe the green magic powered tech we see in the trailers is part of a secondary system made as a backup to the sheikah in case gannondorf manages to free himself.

i'm so glad that botw/totk has introduced more western fans to castle in the sky. it's essentially the lord of the rings of japanese fantasy, in terms of sheer influence on the genre, including past zelda games! twilight princess's sky temple is the first example that comes to mind. it has that same ethereal, melancholic vibe that you described in the video. despite its advanced technology and it being inhabited by the occa, the city in the sky still feels empty, overgrown, and haunted by a history too distant and alien to be understood today. other zelda games like minish cap and especially skyward sword also feature some nods to castle in the sky, but i wanted to highlight twilight princess since i just finished replaying it as i patiently wait for totk 🥲 while we all wait, i'd highly recommend castle in the sky to any zelda fan that hasn't seen it already. it's my all-time favorite movie, so i love seeing it get the attention it deserves! :)

Also I wanted to say I really respect zeltik for not making a vid on the artbook leak, I know he's worked tremendously hard to have even the small relationship with Nintendo he has developed, im sure there was soooo much pressure and anxiety about what he should or shouldn't do, he could've made so much content and end the dry spell of not much being released on ToTK, and probably tons of money too, but he had the integrity to keep his channel pure for those who want wait and experience the game and its official updates as it's creators and publisher truly intended. With malice coming from underground, sky islands appearing and what you said in the video, that zelda may have to let go of hyrule, maybe in tears of the kingdom ganondorf will conquer hyrule. Zelda will help the people escape to the sky islands, possibly becoming hylia in the process. This would create a state similar to the start of skyward sword, or create an actual loop through time magic.

What if he was tired of being destined to be the one to save Hyrule over and over again? What would Hylia even say? Huge rabbit holes aside, this is a pretty awesome video.

I think after the most recent trailer where Zelda is basically wearing the outfit we can say there's a good chance we'll get some big parallels plot wise.

This analysis and discussion is amazing. BotW is my favourite LoZ beating SS, which was my former favourite LoZ title, and I absolutely LOVE Studio Ghibli movies and other movies with the same animation style and story telling.

You went so in depth but tripped at the last hurdle. Thematics are what matter most in Eastern storytelling. Princess Mononoke is in itself a spiritual successor to Nausicaa, further developing its nature/technology theme in a more nuanced way with the introduction of Iron Town as an example of how technology isn't alway bad. I would expect Tears of the Kingdom to further develop these Ghibli themes, especially considering that Princess Mononoke ends in a somewhat open ended way with its core issues not entirely resolved. Meanwhile the Zelda franchise has been building its own themes in the form of the oft-misunderstood timelines. They represent different philosophies, approaches to the same predicament - that of one who would fall on their sword to defeat the bad (Downfall), that of one who sees good in the bad (Child) and that of one who tries to evade the bad (Adult). The Child timeline has been delivering metaphors much like the demon boar - like how Majora's Mask puppeteers Skull Kid, how Midna is seduced by the Fused Shadow. How another Ganondorf winds up on a path to evil. To me the progression is really obvious - Ganondorf can be redeemed, MUST be redeemed to have any hope of seeing malice for the true threat it really is.

Great analysis! The connection between Ghibli and Zelda has always been clear, but I am amazed how much of it is understated. Much of the parallel I've read seem confined to either Mononoke, Spirited Away and Castle in the sky. But for me it goes much further than this.

Castle in the sky and princess Mononoke are my two fav Ghibli movies. 100% the first thing I noticed when I played BOTW. Especially the mountain spirit and the forest spirits.

im so happy i decided to play botw back in 2020, when i got my switch. it was my first zelda game. when the game first came out i thought it looked awesome and i might try it. but i think it might have been your videos that gave me the push? since then ive been partial to stories with huge worlds and abandoned ruined cities. the awe and the unsettling atmosphere gives me a rush and the sense of scale is incredible. thats why i played the last guardian, and why i watched castle in the sky before watching this video. id been meaning to do it for a while and seeing that you uploaded this video gave me a good excuse. it was incredible. i cant wait for totk.

@@mythicdawn9574 I’ve since played OoT which was pretty good, I really enjoyed it. Although in some parts I didn’t have much fun but in some I really had fun with. Like the fire temple, and the well in kakariko. Now I’m getting started on MM which so far is a confusing game lol. But the mystery of it all is very intriguing.

This is such an interesting take! Really enjoyed this video and it makes me even more curious to see if any of these predictions come true. Also makes me wish there were more Studio Ghibli-like video games. (Ni No Kuni is a great example, but something with a darker feel).
