Nate kinda mentioned it but I think the Movie will have a significant impact on holiday sales. If you saw it in theaters, then you saw how freakin massive it was with entire families dressed up as Mario characters. Kids will want to play as Mario, Luigi, Peach and Toad. This game captures their personalities with fantastic art and animations. Also it sounds like the perfect game to play with your child since you can save them or have them play as Yoshi.

I'm going to defend Sunshine a bit because I grew up with it. Definitely flawed but it set up a lot for the series. The island and worlds feel more lived in than any other Mario game. I never get tired of coming out of a level and seeing how my actions affected the hub world (which is the best hub world in the series, though not the most iconic.) The levels weren't just floating blocks in air or space but actual places. The NPCs are also the best in the series. And Flood adding movements to Mario's moveset would not be attempted against until the likes of Cappy. The influence Sunshine had on Odyssey is very strong

Sunshine had a rushed development, resulting in lots of glitches, limited variety of missions, an underwhelming final level.... and I absolutely love the game. Mario's movement feels great, I find fludd very fun to use, and the tropical themes and music are so good.

Big agree. Sunshine is still my favorite Mario game of all time, and a top 5 game of all time period. Just a joy to play, and F.L.U.D.D. is a super fun natural evolution of Mario 64s 3D platforming. Take me back to Isle Delfino.

Alot of ppl hate that game, but I played it recently and definitely loved it. Great music, great level design. A bit short sure, but lots of fun. I like more that style of sabdboxes with a central hub and hidden secrets, that just a linear succesion of levels.

U Deluxe_ and _Super Mario 3D Land._

I'd say Yoshi's Island suffered in sales because of the success of Donkey Kong Country. DKC came out in 94 with DKC2 following in 95, creating internal competition for YI. DKC was a huge hit and still fresh in people's minds when DKC2 came out, SMW was already several years old by the time YI came along. Also DKC's digitized graphic style went over so well at the time, I think many people dismissed YI because of it's art direction which is ironic because YI aged very well in that department whereas the digitized graphics seem much less impressive now than they did in the 90s

I think we're looking at a well-crafted 2D masterpiece. I still have to play it of course but just from looking at the gameplay videos, I haven't seen a 2D platformer oozing with this much mechanics, soul, and personality since Rayman Legends for the Wii U. It’s quite refreshing.

@@radiorah768 I actually played the Definitive version of it on Switch not that long ago. I guess I’m just not a fan of how gimmicky it is, and a lot of its levels feel a bit trial and error based and you have to be very quick with your reaction time for certain levels, which I’m not a fan of, plus having to look around for all of the blue fairy things makes the levels drag on a bit too much for me. I also find the overworld to make the game a bit unmotivating to go through since it doesn’t feel like you’re actually going on an adventure, you’re just going through a ton of paintings that you can freely choose from. The artstyle is also a bit of a turnoff for me since it kind of looks a bit like a mobile game to me. I also find it a bit annoying having to revisit levels to save 3 more of those blue fairy things by having to speedrun through the levels which feels very trial and error dependent. The Murphy levels are also a bit of an annoyance to me. While I haven’t played Donkey Kong Country 2, I HAVE played through Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze and that game is up there as one of my favorite 2D platformers. It feels challenging but also fun and simple to go through, and none of its levels feel annoying except for a few of the underwater levels in world 4. I’ve also played through SMB3 and really enjoyed breezing through its levels, although they feel a bit too short and easy for me despite a lot of people finding that game to be difficult near the end. Personally I think I might prefer NSMB DS and maybe even NSMBU over it, though I’m definitely in the minority with that opinion lol.

ATLUS would be crazy not to put metaphor on switch 2, maybe even switch 1 as well if they can squeeze a port out. The game doesn't have that much buzz and needs to prove itself as a new IP, if it's a launch game it could easily have a boost in sales due to being on a shiny new console. Sega probably have had dev kits for a while now, considering they developed the port for P5 and Metaphor uses the P5 engine they could probably go for a simultaneous release if they worked with the studio zero team. I can see them not being able to delay the launch to set up timing for a switch 2 release due to microsoft deals though.

Yoshi’s island is not imo a 2D Mario game, but it is imo better than all of them. So much creativity in level themes, enemy design, level design, artstyle, game mechanics, music, etc. it’s just art. As a newer gamer, SNES games unsurprisingly always feel a bit dated and bland when compared to modern games, but Yoshi’s Island’s unbridled creativity means it still stands the test of time. 2D Mario’s focus is less on creativity and more on fun platforming stages and movement, which isn’t a bad thing at all. Yoshi’s focus on unique gimmicks mean it’s less replayable and fun from a purely gameplay perspective. This is why I don’t consider it to be a “true” Mario. Mario Wonder looks like it’s trying to capture that essence, that ethos of creativity from Yoshi’s Island. If it can also balance it with the tight gameplay fun of 2D Marios, then my word Nintendo will have made an all-timer.

You can't talk about best of all time without playing it... and then replaying it... and then waiting for the novelty to go away... and replaying it yet again. You have to put the game through it's paces just like the others have. I'll say that there is potential with this one with respect to level design, mechanics and all of that, but it absolutely won't have the same impact as SMB, SMB3 or SMW did. That's pretty much impossible these days as there is so much saturation, even within Nintendo itself. I just don't see this title having the same impact as Breath of the Wild, although I expect it to be excellent. I do think it's important though to distinguish between "impact" and "best". Best can be analyzed with a modern lens and judged with 2023 standards, and in this sense, Wonder could turn out to be the best 2D Mario for sure. I believe any game that actually has the best controls, mechanics and design by 2023 standards is actually the correct "best". In this area, something like Ocarina ranks very poorly - not just to other modern Zelda games, but even stuff like Rise of the Tomb Raider and many other games are simply doing things much better. If you're being honest with yourself, you know this statement is right. It's pretty hard to argue that Twilight Princess isn't just a strict upgrade over Ocarina - it is. What reviewers thought at the time doesn't matter - our standard should be everything we know now in 2023. The list of best games in a particular genre will likely be new ones, not old ones. But impact is very different, and we can actually account for history, reviews at the time of release, cultural impact, influence on future games, etc. And in this sense, Ocarina does still score highly. And sadly, I doubt very many games will ever enter this list now as gaming has long past the innovation phase. Even something "spicy" in 2023 is still fairly iterative when it comes down to it. Breath of the Wild might be one of the only games to actually enter the conversation here. Nothing new really qualifies anymore. Like what would actually qualify - the first mass-market VR game? The first highly rated neural chip game? It would have to be something like that to even make such a list.

Wonder feels like that weirdness upgrade to Mario like SMW2YI was to SMW. I liked some of the NSMBU games but they did feel underwhelming. I think NSMBU2 though, with the usage of the gold coin mechanic, could have been used in even more unique ways--I don't think they used the full potential of that mechanic.

To me, take the Mario IP away from this game and it appears to be a well polished above average side-scroller. Nothing more.

im playing it right now on my modded switch, first world is nice and the overworld is beautiful. call me crazy but i do prefer the triple jump from the new series hopefully theres a badge for that.

@@RhythmGrizz everybody related to spawn wave got the hate over the years. Like the mayor in Ghostbusters 2 said "Being miserable and treating other people like dirt is every New Yorker's god-given right".

Don't understand hype for this game. New Super Mario games were very bland. They were just okay. And I do not see any evidence from the previews that this is any different. If this was new 2d donkey kong, Zelda or Metroid I would be way more excited because Nintendo delivered for the previous titles.

I would rather have a 3d mario Game every 10 years than this. I will not play this.
