It's not a rangefinder camera. It's a P&S. A rangefinder camera uses two windows and a mechanism to take advantage of parallax in order to allow you to focus by overlapping two images.

If I had to guess: the eye symbol most likely triggers "red eye reduction". If it is what i think it is, it should fire a little pre-flash with this setting on.

Yea that's a good call, quite likely it's something like that. I'm going to be shooting another roll on it this week, I'll try it out

What you'll notice when the red eye reduction is on is that the Minolta will flash that incandescent light a few times before it takes the picture. It causes people's pupils to close. Olympus uses a different approach rapidly fires the actual camera flash few times.

It's on my watch-list on eBay now! Thanks for the hint. I bought adapters so I can use 135-film in my 6x6 and 6x9 cameras and also get panoramic images what are SO COOL.

What is the aspect ratio of the panorama mode? May it be 16:9? It is a bit wasting film. But I agree, shooting in an other aspect ratio makes you to shoot in another way. It is more cinematic than photographic. Real panoramic shots you make with a shorter focal length. 24 mm on 35 mm film wood be fine. The XPan is unreached, ever.

The aspect ratio is a little wider than 16:9 it comes out to roughly 3:1. Most of the shots in this video were shot on 28mm for reference

Quick question when you flip the switch to panoramic mode does it also change the aspect ratio in the viewfinder? or does it only change it inside the camera?

it changes it in the viewfinder as well! I can't believe I didn't mention that in the video, it's what really makes the shooting experience different with this camera. In full frame mode there is also some very feint lines to indicate where the black bars come down to

@@crtvfrdm Thanks man, yah i've been struggling to find a clip of someone actually showing through the viewfinder how it looks. I saw a couple other minoltas do it but there doesn't seem to be any clips of this particular one doing it. I mainly want to use the camera as a "what it would look like in panoramic" viewfinder, cause that will carry over to my digital shots as well, it's very tough to imagine what pano would look like without actually seeing it

@@faintanomaly if you only want to use it as a viewfinder before you take the shot on digital I would recommend going for something even cheaper than this one. I was just at a camera store today that had some really cheap plastic manual panorama point and shoots, around 10-15 bucks each. even though I paid only 10 for this minolta I've seen it go for much more on ebay etc. I think I got a really good deal on it. the plastic ones will weigh about 1/4th what this minolta weighs and they are about half the size too. which I'd say is nice if you're going to be carrying 2 cameras at least

yah i also know of those ones, but people in my country, for some reason, decide to sell them at the same price as the minolta zoom 28, so i'm going to go for the zoom 28 just because it seems to be a better value. plus i want to take some on location shots with the film camera while i'm doing more "pro" work with the digital setup. it seems to be a pretty cost effective way of doing it@@crtvfrdm

I own this camera, the red light means there’s not enough light and the flash will go off. If you have it in auto mode for the flash, it will go off. If you switched it off, the red light will flicker indicating the shot will be dark.

Or if you still want the the "real, uncropped panoramic experience", a medium format lens + 3D print body should be more affordable option. Of course typically you need to put a 3rd party rangefinder. Such a bulky setup, though. Not as compact as the X-Pan. Don't forget that the Fuji GX617 (the X-Pan's much bigger brother) is also damn expensive.

​@@crtvfrdm Zeker! Bijvoorbeeld de ND617 wordt ook gewoon geprint. Bij middenformaatcamera's zit de sluiter in de lens. Middenformaat is ook minder gevoelig voor lichtlekken. Eigenlijk is de body dus alleen een filmhouder. Focussen kan gewoon door te zone focussen, en als je je telefoon's camera gebruikt kan je de compositie behoorlijk goed inschatten. Overigens heeft iemand ook al een 35mm X-pan uit hout gemaakt, met een middenformaat copal lens, zo belicht je vrijwel hetzelfde als met de Xpan. De link naar het filmpje heb ik niet bij de hand, maar het is volgens mij een aantal dagen geleden geüpload.
