A few observations about Carlini in this game: 1. Its not often you see Carl with less time on his clock than his opponent. 2. he almost never sacs and this wasn't really a sac...he got two pawns plus his opponent's castling rights, which is probably worth a pawn. Still even that much is an unusual move for him. 3. Never seen him so silent....guess he had a failure to "kabibilate" 4. as usual, he's too arrogant to resign, and not enough of a sportsman to say "good game". He just says "I refuse to move"...until Dave makes him move!

How is it arrogant. I don't say good game to my family and friends, we already have that understanding. Also, being overly friendly doesn't add spice to the competition.

The opening played was the Czech Benoni...In closed positions where there are no pawn breaks and no pawns have been exchanged there will be a lot of piece maneuvering...Closed games require a lot of waiting and patience...Carlini made the mistake of trying to force the play by making a hasty, foolish knight sac...The FIDE master just sat back and waited on Carlini to run out of patience and make a mistake then he capitalized on it...Simple chess.

@soakedbearrd
@soakedbearrd 5 жыл бұрын
@@kaijiesoo8588 Nc7+, Kd8, Nxa8, Qxg2, Rf1, Qxh3. Black wins knight on a8 eventually no? Black has healthy pass h pawn, stopped white from castling kingside, got three pawns and white's knight is at least temporary trapped. Soon to follow b6 and Bb7. White has no checks and the position at least in the center is closed so black king safety isnt that bad. Dunno, its messy so maybe you are right.
@kaijiesoo8588
@kaijiesoo8588 5 жыл бұрын
soakedbearrd Afraid not. Qxh3 Be2! threatening Qxd6. Only way to defend the pawn is Ke7, which allows the knight to escape.
@soakedbearrd
@soakedbearrd 5 жыл бұрын
You are right Qxh3 is greedy and just an outright blunder. Stopped analyzing it myself and put it on the comp. Comp Recommends Nb1 instead of Qxh3. So Nb1, Be2, Qg6 and gives white a +0.3 evaluation. About 10 moves later black manages to kill knight but white is still a +0.1 advantage since he is up the exchange. Black is up a pawn and has better pawn structure. But white has two rooks to black rook and bishop. Eventually, it all get traded down into a bishop and pawn against a Rook and it looks like a draw (didnt go past move 70). Its an interesting line nonetheless that isnt as straight forward as it first seemed to me.

I think your assessment of the initial position is wrong and there is a reason why the engine shows white as having the edge in the poistion. Just my 2 cents, you said white pieces are inactive, but let's compare for a bit white bishop : for black is undeveloped and blocked by his own pieces, has nowhere to go at the moment, if the knight moves all the available squares for it are controlled by white so that's a no-no. if b pawn moves then he'll be staring at a pawnchain pretty much being useless if both a pawn and b pawn move it will be most likely a chain stare with an extra tempo loss. These above make it a terrible bishop, white at least can maneuver through e2 either activating or trading for an active knight black bishop: for black it's unable to effectively influence the game, just stares at own pawnchain, true it has more sense than the white one, this one at least protects the base of the pawnchain but is effectively a better version of a pawn, the only available maneuver is f8 - h6 followed or preceded by a pawnbreak on the kingside, this makes it really bad. for white all you have to do is a pawnbreak on the queenside b4 and some pressure or even trade it for an active knight i'd say this piece is also better for white The knights are a bit better for black yes, but it's only a closed position for so long, until white decides to open even if it means sacking a paw ( definitely not a knight ) and when that happens i feel that black is a bit worse Black does have the space advantage indeed but has a weaker king and will have a much harder time connecting rooks :)
