It is worth mentioning that if someone was going to buy a Microshift bar end for the purpose of shifting an 11 speed cassette with an Eagle rear derailleur, they would probably be better off with the Microshift BS-SR-M11-R, which pulls the 1.12 X-Actuation ratio that both Sram 11 speed mtb and Eagle use. Its not surprising that the Microshift BS-M11 you used and linked in the description works, because 11 speed Shimano Dyna-Sys has a pull ratio of 1.1. But if someone was buying parts they might as well get the correct cable pull, not one that is off by .02. Though if someone was buying a cassette, derailleur and bar end shifter, to do a similar setup, it wouldn't be any more expensive to get an NX eagle cassette and a Microshift BS-SR-M12 shifter, to go with that NX eagle derailleur. That would have the same range as the setup you show here, and 12 speeds, using parts that are designed to be compatible with each other, for around the same price. In my opinion Microshift makes enough different bar end shifters that you could have a variety of economical, wide-range "mullet" setups using one without any hacks or questionable compatibility. I think a more interesting challenge is finding a set up that uses a dual control lever, and has the same range as the expensive AXS Eagle setup you reference in these videos. I'd imagine a decent amount of riders would not view a bar end shifter as a comparable alternative to AXS Eagle. Thats why I hope you do someday try the Microshift SB-M110 dual control shifter + Box 2 X-Wide derailleur 11 speed setup I suggested last video!

Geek/nerd alert: Shimano Dyna-Sys (MTB) 10-speed and 11-speed shifters pull 3.4 and 3.6 mm of cable per shift, respectively. SRAM 11-speed and 12-speed MTB rear derailleurs are identical, cable pull-wise, and will shift 11-speed cassettes with 3.5 mm of cable actuation per shift. Either way, one is 0.1 mm or about 3% off per shift from ideal/spec, so it's not surprising your mix-n-match kinda worked. For best effect, key in the derailleur adjustment for the middle of the cassette, and the discrepancy will be halved at the top and bottom gears. (Trivial: 0.1 mm difference in cable pull per shift is about the same discrepancy that Shimano 7-speed shifters have from 8-speed, and those interchange well enough, especially with a floating top pulley on the derailleur)

Russ, its worth looking into an inline barrel adjuster, the reason mountain rear ders dont have barrel adjusters is because they have them at the shifter (the better location). When I do 1x?? on my Salsa Fargo and Warbird I put and inline adjuster near the bars so that I can make my setup adjustments in the stand and on the fly (while actively riding). A number of companies make these, but I like the jagwire ones the most of the versions that I have used.

Great video, just FYI...switching from friction to index won't change the amount of cable pulled. The same distance is still covered. Think of it like a clicked or declicked aperture ring on a lens. The click (index) just gives a predetermined distance between open & closed down (high & low gears in this analogy ).

This video has been saved and I already started to look funny at my drive train. So it appears you can shift a SRAM eagle RD on a 11 speed cassette with a Shimano 11 speed mountain index. Actually, I have STIs talking to a Shimano MTB RD through a Jtek ShiftMate at the moment: wondering if I could operate the SRAM NX with it on a humongous cassette with it --there is some slack in the system and it might just work, as the MicroShift does.

I can't help thinking that to wrap so much chain maybe the next generation of derailleurs will have an extra articulation in the arm. Dear Bike Professor Roca: Love the Cave of Bad Ideas and the intro to this series! I've been curious about how to expand my gear range/lower the gear inches on one of my Bike Fridays that I currently have a 1x7 (50t chain ring and a 13-30). As I consider the size of rear derailleur for a mega cassette and the limited ground clearance on a 20" wheel, I don't think this would be an optimal setup, right? I am probably better off going 2x in the front and adding a front derailleur.

On a mountain bike, the barrel adjuster would seize in the grime at the rear derailleur. On road brifters, there's really not a good place for a barrel adjuster. Some road bikes have in-line barrel adjusters between handlebar and frame. That's how I've set my gravel bike up with an older Shimano SLX 9 speed mountain derailleur.

@RollinRat lol cadence is always a compromise with range. But i find I only care about cadence on the road so as long as my first 3 or 4 gears are pretty close I don't mind. @RollinRat My whole setup cost me probably 200 bucks for everything and works for the all the dj/street stuff I do and for trail riding. The box components stuff is also really cheap and will fit any hub back to the 1990s. But the fact is that all drivetrains have compromise, if cadence is not one you're willing to make then yeah a front derailleur with a tight ratio cassette is best for you. Is chain slap the end of the world for most single track? No but for hucking it in the city peace of mind and simplicity are great (for me). I've definitely dropped a chain in downtown traffic before and its a bad day.

@@RichardKendrick RIP I wish companies would stop fussing with cable pull but you can still use a friction shifter. I'm planning on putting their 1x8 on a new bike for the gf this season, major upgrade to her 3 speed internal hub. @RollinRat I live in CO at the base of the rockies so yeah there are some hills. I also like to do big days on the weekend linking up as many trails as i can between A and B. 11-36 with a 36 ring certainly means I know how to spin and mash, and while I'm definitely fixed gear ss curious I can only afford to own 1 bike right now. Being able to hit the local trails, and hold a steady 15-20 mph or faster on the road and in traffic is a real tall order for ss. I'm in the same boat almost with keeping old stuff, I started riding as an adult on a 1994 rigid mtb. I still have that frameset and all its parts but the drivetrain I experimented with on that (used sram 1x7 dh derailleur + cut down 10spd cassette) I transplanted onto a used ritchey p26 frame. That's the last 26er Ritchey made (oddly enough there was no competition on that ebay bid), which being what it is meant I didn't need new tires drivetrain, bb or cranks. I could get a fork and wheels all used for super cheap. In the end the soul of that bright purple 90s rig is still there just with disc brakes, and slightly more stable geo. I think we can both agree that this industry has become increasingly wasteful encouraging people to buy the latest and greatest every season. I'm a broke college kid in a pricey town and I see all kinds of car-rack queen bicycles (carbon xc bikes, brand new enduro rigs etc.) on the backs of expensive cars. These are bikes that you know get maybe a few hundred miles a summer. Then you see these unfair comparisons on popular cycling channels or publications acting as if what was once a standard is now unusable.

GRX 1x rear mech looks like a rebranded XT 8000 to me with the cable pull altered of course. And the XT works flawlessly with a sunrace 11-50 so the GRX should work too. I just wish Shimano skipped the 11 speed stuff and went straight into 12 speed with a 10-51 cassete. All they really needed to do is a drop bar shifter compatible with the existing 12 speed mountain bike stuff, XTR 9100, XT 8100 and SLX 7100 that would've been perfect. Drop bar SLX 7100 would be the perfect alternative to the Eagle AXS stuff.

Thanks to this “bad” or, rather, bad-ass idea, I’m inspired to upgrade my 1x11 drop bar bike to a budget mullet too. But first, I’m curious about the ergonomics of the Gevenalle “brifter” vs. bar-end shifter. Do you have a preference for one or the other on the road or trail? I’d think bar-end shifters would be best for rough terrain as one would likely be in the hooks anyway and the shifter would be closer to your hands than any other configuration, including trigger sifters mounted to the bar tops.

Perhaps already mentioned, but Microshift now makes a 12 speed (SRAM and Shimano) 12 speed bar end shifter: www.microshift.com/en/product/bs-sr-m12/ I get the fun of the video is to see what parts can be mixed/matched, but if someone is going to actually try and put together a mullet setup on the cheap via buying parts, getting a 12 speed bar end shifter is probably the safer bet over an 11 speed when the price difference is negligible. Anyway, keep up the good work Russ and HELLO from Long Beach.

Depends on your drivetrain. I was working with what I had which is 11spd and unwilling to go to XD freehub because THAT would cost another $100. So yes, if you've got 12, it goes without saying get that. If you've got 11, like I do, this works.
@ryantaylor8208

Wait, so this was a 12 speed NX MTB derailleur on an 11 speed cassette and an 11 speed micro shift bar end shifter? I guess I assumed you had a Sunrace 12 speed cassette that mates to a non-XD hub. Either way, just wanted to ensure others knew the 12 speed Microshift bar end shifter existed as I think it’s a relatively new part to their lineup.

Anyone know if there is a legit reason for road/mtn diff cable pull ratios? Or just to make you buy within the categories?
@ricktan5663
@ricktan5663 4 жыл бұрын
Only thing I can think of is less volume/lever range on the mtn shifters as opposed to the road brifters.Personally, I think that Shimano should just allow road brifters and any kind of front/rear derailleurs if they are Di2.
@HollyBoni
@HollyBoni 4 жыл бұрын
When Shimano introduced the Dyna Sys pull ratio on 10spd mountain stuff, they said it was because it works better in an "MTB environment" when the cables are grimy etc. (Until Dyna Sys, Shimano tried to keep the same pull ratio, but that meant they had to decrease the cable pull each time an extra speed was added to the back. This became problematic on 10spd) But internally routed 10spd brifters that used the old cable pull worked like shit all the time, so Shimano moved to a longer cable pull on 11spd road stuff anyways... So on the Shimano side both MTB and road stuff moved to longer cable pull, just a slightly different cable pull... On the SRAM side both 10spd MTB and road stuff used the same cable pull and pull ratio, and both worked great, but they changed the MTB stuff on 11spd. I think both manufacturers did it to keep you from mixing stuff. But then the whole gravel and drop bar MTB thing came along. If you look at SRAM 1x11 road and MTB stuff they're pretty much the same, just with different cable pull and pull ratios, and for example a 10spd GRX rear derailleur is exactly the same as an older 10spd MTB rear derailleur... It makes no sense at all.

@RollinRat Same here, I love writing youtube comments on my typewriter and then mailing them to youtube. 😁 I was half joking, although I hate old bike stuff and tech with passion. 💩🤮 I used to work as a mechanic in a store where we mainly specialized in vintage bikes. Never again! 😁 (But really, I hope i'll never work as a bike mechanic again anywhere else either)
@HollyBoni

@RollinRat "They dont make things like they used to, especially in Asia!!" That's simply racist! 😁 As I said i'm quite familiar with old bikes and old components (and the "everything was better in the good old days" mentality) so I don't need someone else's word. Personally I hate it all, and I hated it even more when I had to work on those damn things every day. I'm very happy with new bike tech and i'll never ever recommend vintage and/or outdated components to people who actually want to use their bikes. In my experience modern stuff works brilliantly, and can actually make biking more enjoyable for most people compared to old stuff which a lot of the time is pretty much working against you. So let's just agree to disagree. 😉
@HollyBoni
@HollyBoni 4 жыл бұрын
@RollinRat The racist thing was just a joke, I guess you didn't notice the emoji? I don't see how a 40 year old hub is "better" than anything (strong word) new. Why? Modern hubs are so simple, they're cleverly designed so you can switch them from thru axle to QR sometimes even without tools, they're usually better sealed, and you can replace the entire bearing (not just the cones and the ball bearings like in the case of most, but not all old hubs) and they will run like new again. Why wouldn't they be able to run for years and years? You can keep repeating that you "built things that fly in space" etc, but no offense, I think you're simply stuck in the past and afraid to try new things. My boss was exactly like that, i've heard him say so many times how hydraulic brakes suck because "you have to bleed them all the time". Funny thing is, I don't think he ever owned a bike with hydros. (Also, don't forget that old tech was new once... I'm sure plenty of people protested decades ago against the tech that you love. That's just how the world works.) I'm younger, but I think that i've played with and worked on more older stuff than most bikers from the older generations. I know that there are some vintage parts that are beautifully made. But the modern stuff that's not as beautifully made still does the job, and does it much better. For example you say brifters are complicated and prone to failure. I say that the SRAM levers on my bike haven't missed a beat since I got them. I've ridden them everywhere including mountain bike trails, I fell and they took most of the hit, zero problems. I replace the cable and housing every year just so I sleep better at night, but other than that I don't even need to touch the barrel adjuster. Yes, brifters can fail, and friction shifters are more reliable. But do I want to trade the convenience of an indexed shifter right under my fingers? Hell no! I've ridden plenty of single speed bikes. They can be fun for a city run around or something, and I know people use them for more who enjoy torturing themselves. I like to ride everywhere, in one ride i'll mix pavement, dirt roads, singletrack, i'll ride up and down mountains. I utilize the entire gear range on my bike. I might climb singletrack for an hour in my lowest gear, then ride a fast paved section in the higher gears. A single speed bike would make things simply miserable. The world has moved on. Just because something is more complicated, that doesn't mean it will fail immediately. Modern components, even in the cheaper segment work great, and there have been plenty of innovations that make biking more fun and more user friendly. I just helped out my friend's girlfriend. She has an old road bike, we replaced her 2x7 downtube shifter groupset with a modern groupset with brifters, a wider gear range etc. She got much faster and wider tires. We threw the stupid old handlebars in the trash and got her some compact bars. She likes riding her bike sooo much more, and she doesn't know anything about the "tech side" of biking. I can't really say anything more, peace! ✌️
