...Gavin says that you can't use the sink if there are dirty dishes in the sink. Presumably, he'd use the sink to wash dishes. Why would dishes in the sink prevent that from happening?

I think what he meant is that piling up the dishes in the sink makes it hard to have the space needed to comfortably wash them, as opposed to piling them up on the side and running them under the water one by one. It's also hard to wash your hands or any fruit/veggies if there's dishes cutting the free space to the faucet

You also use the sink to fill up a pot, kettle, or Brita pitcher.

I agree with both of them, but it is incredibly difficult if you have a household full of children/siblings, there are 10 of us living in our house, it's really hard for me and my mom to keep it clean.

The reason to put stuff in the sink, at least temporarily, is if it’s a hot tray, pan, etc that will burn the kitchen tops. Rinse it out with cold water and let it cool in the sink.
