The problem is even finding a good internship position, companies tend to choose people with experience even for that kind of positions. Beside that, positions for chemical engineers only, are very rare even in pharma industry or chemical industry in general, there is a lot of competition from other engineers such as mechanical engineers or automation engineers or even chemists or graduates in biotechnology. I think today is not a good moment for chemical engineering in general and beside that, companies are becoming more and more demanding even for internships that are formally on the job formation opportunities. Job market for chemical engineers today, is awful. At least this is my experience, I hope out there there is someone with a good experience in chemical engineering to share

@@legokat7256 i suggest you to keep improving your skills. The IT and Digital business line is always looking for new employers, so you can learn coding or using digital tools like SAP. Also Project Management, Energy Management or Audit certifications can boost your CV. After several Months some energy companies are finally noticing me because as a chemical engineer, I am very versatile and I can be employed in several jobs related to energy Management, energy procurment, IT and Digital, Thermal plants design and so on. I also think that the renewable energy business line is growing fast and it is a flourishing sector and it can be good to point your attention to it. Basically the key factor in a chemical engineering CV is versatility, so in my opinion you have to invest in that, don't be scared to try to work in a new area or for a role that you never tried before. Last but not least, keep trying, don't be discouraged, soon or later your chance will come to you, I know that this can sound pleonastic, but trust me, that is the way things are, if you keep trying, it's only a matter of time, you will get a good job. Anyway I am italian and my experience is related to the european job market, but I think that all we chemical engineers of all the world are facing the same problems now, so I hope this can help you.

i really wish i tried looking for a placement during my 2nd year, i graduated with a bachelors degree with no internships or experience. i found a lab assistant job and now im an analyst at an environmental firm involved in regulatory affairs for pesticides. its not real engineering but im hoping this experience and a masters degree can hopefully make me more appealing for a engineering job

Actually in pharma chemE are favoured above all the others. Biotechnologist are mainly formed for lab work, mechanical/automation engineers are not as qualified as chemE in process engineering. Now i dont know how's the situation in the US but here in germany there are thousands of positions as process engineer :D

Great tips Eggs! I have seen so many examples of engineers from different disciplines working in fields that are not necessarily typical to graduates of their programs. This always reminds me, we are taught "how to learn" in engineering school.

Chemical Engineering is dying at this point. Being a Chemical Engineer and having spent almost 7.5 years studying (BSc/MSc integrated degree (5.5 years) and MSc degree (2 years) in Energy and Environmental Process Engineering) I find it extremely hard to get any job in Europe (EU). I am applying for jobs since previous July (2020) and the only company that actually interviewed me was a start up for an unpaid position. I understand that I lack experience however I have to say that no friend of mine that studied CS had any issues finding a job (actually they are changing jobs like there is no tomorrow) and the chemical engineers have become something of a joke. In any case, whenever I meet guys from my department, we always talk about bad study choices and we look for alternative solutions like a 2nd MSc degree in Business analytics, Mathematical Modeling, Data Science, Machine Learning etc. As a recent graduate with 2 MSc degrees who's been looking for a job all over Europe for over 7 months now, I wouldn't advice anyone to make these choices, its better to have a CS degree from a relatively unknown university than a Chem.Eng. degree from a top school. In the end, the degree and the work required is an investment and no one wants to make a bad one.

Any advice for a recent graduate chemE that did really well in academics, but doesn’t have industry experience? I wasn’t able to secure an internship my sophomore year, and junior year I was going to get one, but the company decided to only keep the people they hired in the fall when COVID hit (my 4 interviews with this company were in the spring, literally the week before COVID shutdowns started) I tried to get another internship but almost all of them were cancelled because of COVID, or already filled all of their positions. Now I graduated and have relentlessly applied to over 100 jobs and/or internships (and still applying) and IF the company even responds they either say “We don’t typically hire seniors as interns” or “We are looking for someone with more relevant experience”. It feels like I have fallen victim to circumstances beyond my control and I don’t know what to really do. I’ve networked, reached out to my connections, and tried to contact people directly from these companies through linkedin, company website, etc... and I get the exact same responses.

Sorry you're having so much trouble, sounds like you did everything right, covid is certainly not making things easy for anyone 😓. Without knowing much about your resume and area you live in, the best I can suggest is really to keep at it and apply to positions that seem less desirable. Sometimes any type of foot in the door is the best way to get into a company. Just keep collecting experiences, of any kind, just so you don't have resume gaps and can talk about these experiences in a way that sounds applicable to the companies you want to work for in the future. I've had friends get jobs post-grad with other experiences (research, projects etc.) despite not having an internship or industry experience. Anything you can sell on your resume and in an interview is great. Also, once covid is over I imagine the market will be a little more promising. Keep at it. Best of luck!

Spend time working on your resume. Get a technician position even. They can be a lot of more fun, less responsibility and you will kick engineers ass when a position opens in the same company.

I’ve recently finished getting my MBA, and started looking for a job in chemical engineering. Atm I have my expectations and where I’m looking for set, but I know that if nothing comes up then I’ll have to find something else. Would applying for an operator position be okay? My dad worked in an operator position and said that I’ll probably be overqualified, but that it’d be a good way to at least get some experience at a chemical plant that I can put on my resume.

I was offered a 2 years contract as a chemical technician job instead of a process engineer job from a reputable chemical company. They said my experience wasn’t enough to be a process engineer. Do you think is wise to pick up the offer?
