I can't imagine anybody in know in the UK telling me my parents are going to hell, if they did they'd be seen as either a complete arsehole or a nutter...living in the UK with the church of England as the "state" religion isn't something I'm comfortable with, but its so liberal I'm sure some of the vicars don't believe a lot of it, in fact some of the clergy I've come across would be at home being seen as humanists. Lack of religious interference in British society is a plus I guarantee the vast majority of Brits wouldn't want to change, religious and secular alike.

@Gaytony I'm from Widnes 30 miles from tou, similar age to you, and the same when it come to primary school. Lords prayer and a yearly Xmas trip to the church all ends at 11 years old. It must feel like this guy has been dropped on the other side of the moon. The US sounds alot like the middle east, in alot of places when it comes to radical religions. It's amazing that the uk law and society is based in linked to Christianity. However religion is never metioned. America is founded on being external to religion, but its actully taken over like a dose.
@frogstamper

@Gaytony I'm down on the south coast near Brighton and at 55 like you say cannot remember, apart from school days, anybody ever expressing a religious view concerning everyday life ever!! I'm really thankful that UK politicians never invoke religion in our politics, if they did start doing this generally the public would look upon them as "as a little weird" and not a subject that sits well in UK politics...a secular society whereby religion is a private matter is what any stable democracy should aspire to

A part of the UK where this doesn't apply is in some of the immigrant communities and their British born offspring. Among Muslims the children tend to be pretty religious and I think that coming out as an atheist is pretty rare (the faith is also quite clear on apostasy). I have a friend who I'm pretty sure is an atheist, but plays along with it, does a bit of the fasting and doesn't like to be seen drinking in front of other Muslims. Can create some amusing scenes at work drinks.

I live in rural Illinois and in my experience no one really discusses or worries about religion. If one is prompted, they might say “yeah I’m catholic I guess or yeah I believe in god.” because it’s the default answer but no one really contemplates philosophy or religion. They just go about their days. Same with politics. No one actually studies politics or analyses policy positions. They just go with the group mentality without even realizing they are.

Lol being offended by someone telling you that you're going to hell is more of a reflection of the person being offended. Would you be offended if I told you were going to dookah dakka blooka? I sure hope not! Whilst the concept of hell holds far more historical value it's no more of a real place than dookah dakka blooka, so it to me seems quite stupid to be upset about such an empty "threat".

It seems that the act of denial or the disbelief in a power greater than life, leads one to deny the better qualities in other people. The ACT of Simply accepting the fact that there may be a higher power, will help people develop more meaningful and lasting relationships. Atheism is an act of denial, so that when a like-minded group, that assemblage forms a groupthink of shared denialism. That limits the creativity and future possibilities of achieving a greater potential than as if one had not been in a state of denial.
