Can't Stop Playing This Game! Here's Why...

What makes a game playable for a very long time? What is it that drives players to stick to just one game for months or years at a time? It’s different for everyone, but for me it’s about strategy and long term goals. The game that’s had my attention for the past few months has been leaf blower revolution, and today I want to talk about what this game does great, and what developers can learn from it.

A very insightful video with beautifully explained reasoning and examples. I will take note. I honestly have to agree - no matter how hard a game tries, I will never ever make an in-game transaction. It's so shallow. There are very very very few games that will ever convince me to make such a transaction. I know the creators of Don't Starve Together follow roughly this very nice model, seems to me. The characters and features of their game are so interesting and loveable, and then they introduce a number of skins to make their characters look good, and so on with the new updates. They worked from a firm and proper foundation, that's why they're successful and people still play this game to this day.

What amuses me is that every effort by these corporations to make "fun" a commodity fails horribly. no matter how much money is thrown around a dude in his basement consistently still makes way better, more enjoyable video games. it's kind of a perk-you-up kind of thing that just makes me grin... maybe a god _does_ exist, anyway, i should watch the rest of the video now ;)

Yeah, it’s pretty darn fascinating. So much of game dev now is dictated by suits who care more about money than gameplay, and it shows. Indie games are what is keeping the industry moving forward.
