A Spicy Start to the New Year and 20 Seconds of Magic! ;D THE SONG - "Can't Stop" is a group composition by the members of the American rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers. Vocalist Anthony Kiedis is credited for the lyrics. It's the seventh track of their eighth studio album 'By the Way'. The band started writing the songs in early 2001. The album was recorded between Nov 2001 and May 2002 at Cello Studios and Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles. 'By the Way' was released on July 9, 2002 and "Can't Stop" was released, as the album's third single, on Jan 24, 2003. 'By the Way' was, with a few exceptions, critically acclaimed and was very successful. It sold over 280,000 copies in the first week in the US and nearly 2 million copies globally. "Can't Stop" entered the Billboard Hot 100 at #68 on Feb 8, 2003 and peaked at #57 on Mar 15, 2003. It was more successful on the Mainstream Rock Songs where it reached #15 on Mar 1, 2003 and it both entered and peaked at #1 on Mar 8, 2003 on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart. It did moderately well on foreign charts - #22 in the UK, #38 in Australia, #39 in Switzerland, #40 in New Zealand and #48 in Germany. 'By the Way' was massively successful on global charts. It entered the Billboard 200 album chart at #2 on July 27, 2002 which was also its peak position. It was #1 in Australia, Austria, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Switzerland, and the UK. Most of the songs on the album were a departure from RHCP's usual style. Producer Rick Rubin rejected the fast, hardcore punk songs and guitarist John Frusciante wanted more of an 80s pop/new wave feel. This resulted in a clash with bassist Flea (Michael Balzary) who wanted more funk inspired songs. Many fans feel that "Can't Stop" is one of the few songs on the album with more of the familiar RHCP punk rock, and funk with rap rock vocal styles. It remains popular with fans and RHCP play it at most of their gigs. THE DRUMMER - Chad Smith is not a formally trained drummer but gained practical experience playing in school bands. He was mostly unknown before he auditioned for RHCP in 1988. They were impressed by his playing and he joined them in Dec 1988. He likes to blend funk and rock and adds funk, rock, metal and jazz to his playing. He considers Buddy Rich and John Bonham to be influences. He bears a physical resemblance to comedian Will Ferrell and he participated in a charity drum-off with Ferrell on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in May 2014. Would Smith ever consider a drum-off with Sina? He'd better be on his top game if he ever considers it! FUN FACT - According to Rosanna, Sina said she used a drumless track for this cover. That's normal procedure, when they can find one. Apparently the first 20 seconds or so were not up to standard and Sina and Mike had to work a bit of their studio magic to improve things. Ro won't tell me exactly what they did. She said magicians never reveal their secrets. I had to accept that. After all, there's a reason why magician and musician share most of the same letters! Do you believe in magic? Welcome to the new "Twenties"! :D

Hi Juliet! Happy New Year! Thanks for all of this - great stuff. Mike and Sina ARE true magicians but - overall - RHCP would need more than that. And, also just my opinion, Chad Smith should stay far far away from a drum-off against Sina! Cheers!

I'd not heard of this track before, so I had to turn to our Kasey Kasem duo to explain it for me. Amazing background about this song and how it and Miss Sina's track came to be. Thank you again JulietP and Miss Ro! You ladies rock the info "magic"!! ;) May I guess that Mike actually filled in the guitar part for the first 20 seconds as it sounded so clear with Miss Sina?

That was 4 and a half minuets of magic. And two funk videos in one week. This is going to be a great year for music, Sina and us. What you do is just amazing 'cause the creative ideas never stop. If a song isn't right, you fix it. Take one of you older covers, add a new face and bam, new hit. Thanks for inviting us into your world and so dang happy to be part of it. You and your Dad make a damn fine team.

@happydiversion3 жыл бұрын
I agree with you, James: What's not to like about the way this young lady plays? I think the thumbs down must be from a different viewpoint, namely, they're probably thumbing down the song itself. That, I can understand. There's a couple of RHCP songs I like, but this isn't one of them. But I'll tolerate it just to watch Sina play. I love that girl.

ALL your videos are excellent Sina and so much fun to watch! You always choose such great songs that feature your outstanding ability to not just cover a song and get drum tones that match perfectly but you play it with feel as well. A highly underrated American drummer is Bun E.Carlos. I think that you may have covered "I want you to want me" or "surrender" in the past. If you can give him another chance with "Anit that a shame" "Downed" "whoD'king" or "hello there". I think you might enjoy them? Look forward to your next video!!

This one got me thinking about the different styles that different drummers display. Sina is a "throne dancer", moving around all the time as she plays. For contrast, think of Max Weinberg of the E Street Band, who sits like a ramrod as he plays. Yet both produce rock solid performances. It's like the difference between clocks. Max is a digital clock -- accurate, steady, and boring to watch. Sina, on the other hand, is one of those ornate Bavarian town clocks with animated figures and carvings -- it keeps time just like the modern digital version, but there's so much more going on! Sina is as much fun to watch as she is to listen to.
