Can Taiwan's new president face down China? | DW News

Taiwan has a new president. At his inauguration, Lai Ching Te called for peace with China - and for Beijing to dial back its confrontational stance against the democratic island, which it regards as a renegade province. China is dependent on Taiwan for the latest in computer chips, and it also buys the majority of its exports. Europe is a key business partner of both sides - and has urged dialogue, rather than confrontation. Daniel Winter asks Zsuzsa Ferenczy, assistant professor at Taiwan’s National Dong Hwa University, if the new leadership in Taipei could mean more trade and less tension.

He can’t. China has one goal, to take over Taiwan. Trade can’t change that.

cant happen if the Chinese people want to rebel ;) if he does that the Chinese people will no longer support him there's billions of people and most of them chose stability and peace over hostility , xi is a communist tyrant . this factor plus the fact that half the western world has tiwans back i doubt china will invade

Why can't EU or Ukraine use the same strategy of "more trade less tension " with Russia? Because it doesn't work.

Versus Afganastan.... I think Ukraine has a much better future :) Beijing had spent quite a large sum to try to take over Formosa without a fight but its wolf warrior diplomacy -etc kind of backfired. Should have kept the "Beijing welcomes you" 2008 model instead or revealing the mask 5-10 years too early.

@@binbi8177 wonder how come Beijing is still in an endless political purge... as if it somehow NEEDS endless political struggle for legitmacy and/or more power. Beijing sees EU/America providing aids to Ukraine as "prolonging the war" when if Russia had overtaken Ukraine. it really could push the world closer to WW3 than that of global peace. Than again - Beijing has every right to support Moscow using dual use goods for Beijing's political needs even if 1.4 billion citizens' tax money and retirement fund end up having to pay the cost =/ Quick question but wasn't commuism also something of a foreign ideology that came from LLOLL you know where.

If a democratic vote is held in mainland China, at least 90% of people believe that the two sides of the Taiwan Strait should be unified. Of course, the vast majority hope for peaceful reunification. However, China must have the ability to unify by force.

Now I see why Taiwan's past president was able to tour the mainland whereas none of active Beijing official had visit Taiwan (since they have no authority over it) Wonder if the lives for the 1.3 billion mainlander will improve if it somehow ask to become one with ROC than again; its like if North Korea wants to immediate become part of S.Korea... most of the s.korean will probably want it to remain 2 separate country.
