“JuSt GeT a NeW jOb” “MoVe cLoSeR” Listen folks; those of us in the “high mileage commuting club” came here to see if a Tesla could do it, not ask internet strangers their opinions on if we should move or change jobs, mkay? Life isn’t always as easy as it seems, and most of us commute because the pros outweigh the cons. For me, personally, I’m commuting because I make $30k more working where I do than an hour and a half away in my hometown. But if I moved closer to where my work is, we’d pay substantially more in housing and utility costs. So yeah, I’ll eat the mileage and time and listen to some extra podcasts and keep my extra $30k and affordable house ✌🏼

I do a 150 mile commute on a daily basis. I am definitely looking forward to taking delivery of the Model 3. One thing you forgot to mention was not having to deal with going to the gas station. I typically have to go fill up gas every other day. Also, it really stinks to have to go in the shop for an oil change every 10k miles. Appreciate you making this video.

I have a 164 mile commute 4 days per week. I've only had the car for a little over a month, but here's what I've seen. I charge to ~82% each eve, 250 miles plus a bit, typically. My commute each way is about 25 miles at freeway speeds (65 - 75 mph) and the remainder at undivided highway speed (limited to 60 mph on ap, 64 mph if I'm in a hurry with tacc but avoiding tickets). I typically arrive home with between 75 and 85 miles remaining range, though I could stretch that if I were more ... patient. That's with summer temps, no rain, aero caps removed, cabin overheat protection on. That puts me right at the edge of what I feel is healthy for the battery long term. I'm a little concerned about the coming winter temps, and will put on my aeros in Nov. and try to be a bit more patient (I'm in the south mid-Atlantic US with relatively mild winters.) On ap at 60 mph, I can easily remain below 225 Wh per mile, giving me enough leeway to avoid over cycling the batt. That's my hope, anyway!

We average 100 miles per day with no problem. Over 12,000 miles in four months, Just finished a 300+ mile leg. Used A Tesla destination charger to grab a few extra miles, and arrived comfortably at the supercharger in Plano TX. Grabbed a cup of coffee and a donut at one of the local shops, and in thirty minutes we were on our way.

Just finished a trip from Montreal, Quebec back home to Guelph, Ontario. Stopped at the Kingston, ON Supercharger and had a conversation with a woman who is a Prof at Queen's University in Kingston. 3-Hour daily commute with previous monthly gas bill of $700 CDN/mth ($536.50 US). They put in Free Tesla destination chargers at Queen's University and she uses that as her 'home base' for charging. No Energy Costs! That works out to $42,000 CDN ($32,190.06 US) for 5 years of saved gas alone! She and I also benefited from the $14,000 CDN ($10,730 US) provincial rebate - now discontinued by our new, and environmentally idiotic, Conservative government. Final total invoice price for the Model 3 in Ontario was $75,000 CDN ($57,482 US), so she's essentially paying $19,000 CDN ($14,562 US) for 5 years use of an awesome, sexy car which will likely still have massive value at that point. This doesn't even take into account the maintenance savings and comfort. Loving my new Model 3!

That was me and my wife! We did a 4000km road trip to the East Coast and back, about half-and-half charging at hotels included in price, the other half was at SuperChargers.. total cost of SuperCharging was $91 for about 2000 km highway. We did one day of 12 hours driving, about 15 hours total.. with Autopilot it was no big deal!

At least currently, there are lots of free chargers! I think you are confusing per year vs many years and the cost of gas versus cost of electricity. It's a comparison to gas, so "life" of the car (from my spreadsheet) in 6 years driving 350k km's it would cost us about $52k in gas in our old ICE car versus $5800 in electricity if we charged at home over-night at off peak rates. However, in our case my wife can charge free where she parks at work. This may become competitive if many people have Tesla's. Currently she is the only one who uses them and there are 8 chargers available. She pays $100 a month for parking and it's a lottery even to get a parking spot. Not sure what they would pay for the electricity since she charges during on-peak and industrial vs residential pricing.. probably at least double. It's $100 a month to park but if we paid overnight rates to charge at home instead it would be about that or less to charge the car.. versus $7-800 /month in gas we paid before.

I’m commuting roughly 140 miles a day. I go through tons of traffic and over a mountain for a rough 3 hr daily commute and have been considering Tesla recently for the fuel savings. My current car is rather sporty and costing me about $700-$800 a month which is quite brutal but I didn’t really notice until I started plugging numbers. We have discounted charging at my place of work (first 10kwh free and $1.00/hr afterwards for charging so I’ve been quite heavily considering a long range model 3 with FSD to make the commute less stressful. Glad to see others are making bigger commutes with their Teslas!

Ben, love your work but there are a TON of variables left out here which make the Tesla seem more favorable in terms of TCO. This person, and most, should really install a home charging unit. This is, at minimum, $500 for the unit itself plus electrical work. It usually runs $1000-$1500 installed. There has also been a major insurance increase for those coming from an average commuter (I.E. a Jeep). I pay $890 a year for insurance on my car. I got quoted upwards of $2400 a year for a TM3. Another $1500 a year paid out in just insurance premiums. This does, obviously, vary depending on the driver and what they're coming off of. On top of this, these vehicles have been known to run through tires. 15k-20k miles usually the average. So tack on another almost $600 for tires, installed, a year for this person. I've been very close to pulling the trigger on one of these things for a while now. But once everything starts getting added up, it's very difficult to make it make sense.

This is a great question! I drive from Sacramento to the bay area every day of the week an average of 290 miles but some days are up to 400 miles if I have to drive to Gilroy or Monterey. I spend a ton on gas with my small car that is getting an average of 26-28mpg. I have been considering an EV or Hybrid but with all the info I have seen it seems a Hybrid would be best but I would love a Tesla I just don't think it would hold up to the abuse. I worry about the longevity of the battery, the range and having to use the superchargers, in a commute like mine every minute counts in the afternoon and if you're delayed even just 10 minutes it can make your commute an hour+ longer especially on a Friday where a 2.5 hour commute can be upwards of 5.5 hours. I would love to by an EV and not have to pay high prices on fossil fuels but I just am not convinced it would work for me at least not yet but I would love to be wrong.

Current Model S 90D owner. We got it or our long commutes. (150mi/shift 15+shifts a month) Owned since Sept. '16 and have nearly 100k miles on it. We've taken long road trips across country and into Canada and have enjoyed the car immensely. I'd say the car is what afforded our road trips. Our electric is .06/kWh. We've spent less than $1,800 on electricity if all our charging was at home but in reality we've used super chargers about 30% of the time so really closer to ~$1250 cost total compared to our old vehicle which would have been ~$11,300 in fuel alone at $2.60/gal and efficiency of 23mpg. Add in $60 per oil change every 4,000 which adds $1500 and the cost of gas shows poorly. Looking to get a P3D here soon to replace our last gas car.

Why are you repeating this segment with the faulty math? If you're getting 280 miles total in "combined" highway / city driving in a Model 3 AWD with aero wheels, you should immediately be making a reservation with a service centre because something is seriously wrong with your vehicle. Maybe if you were talking about a M3P with 20" tires or something. But even then, in "combined" city / highway driving, that would be a terrible run. Now, if you're talking interstates.... M3 RWD with 19" wheels going a constant 75 mph, or M3P with 20" wheels going 65mph... yeah, 280mi is probably reasonable. But that's not the driving experience of someone commuting into / out of LA. And RWD aero? Come on, be serious. ;)

If you're driving 200 miles a day it's gonna be almost entirely on the highway, also high temperature was mentioned for that scenario but yeah I wish he could've been more detailed on exactly what would get you down to 80 percent range.

The user's commute goes *through* Los Angeles. They're not doing that at high speeds. No way. Even if it was highway speeds, they wouldn't be getting only 280 miles range on a Model 3 LR AWD Aero unless they were driving over 80 mph. So long as they avoid non-aero wheels and AWD, even that would be fine.
@ryccoh
@ryccoh 6 жыл бұрын
Those aero wheels are ugly though what do you think they'd be getting at 65mph without AERO?

In SoCal weather, constant 65mph, with the 19s, only the driver (no cargo), tires aired up? Pretty close to 310 miles. If it's fluctuating around 65mph due to traffic (e.g. up to 80, down to 50, up to 80, down to 50...), less range. If it's fluctuating up to 65 due to traffic (e.g. up to 65, down to 35, up to 65, down to 35...) then more range, as the lower average speed will generally save more energy than the regen losses. Also note that you can always get the 19" and put on a more efficient tire to partially offset the increased aero drag. Particularly if you're in SoCal you may want to run on summer tires rather than the stock all seasons.

I assume Ben was looking at a worst case including like a 95 degree day, how would that change things and what makes you be so sure? I guess EPA rating is heavy on highway travel because it's the US but still it's surprising that you wouldn't lose range at those speeds.

I typically have a 200 mile commute. I live in CT and drive to NYC... in a mustang GT. I didn't know I would be driving so much when I bought it a year ago. I make $85-$110hr depending on the job. I'm about to buy a house 25miles closer to NYC but I'm spending so much on gas I need either a hybrid or long range EV. For me a Tesla would nearly pay for itself as I have spent about $7k in gas in 1 year. I don't mind the commute but I do need to find a solution to bleeding money for gas.

We have 180 mile daily commute and looked at the math before purchasing. Gas/solar electricity savings compared to our 2005 Prius and 2017 Prius Prime mixed together is about $90/month after taking into account the expected new mixture of car driving, maintenance saves about $100/month average (tires aren't negligible driving 36k miles/year), savings on the toll lanes is about $100/month (as long as electric cars continue to drive free on the 91), but increased insurance offset those by about $50. Net savings: $240/month ignoring the car payment.

I actually work in San Diego, but live way north of here past riverside. Sooooo, my commute is over 200 miles per day and the car is doing it easily. I charge to 90% so I start at a rated 279-281 and end around 44-60 depending on conditions and speed. And I drive at 80mph. Or faster occasionally. No charging at work. Sport wheels... Enhanced Autopilot is definitely saving me a lot of stress and strain on this commute. I love this car.

One of the issues you’re not addressing is post warranty costs. For those of use driving 30k miles annually are not going to be covered by Tesla’s current warranty policy. I’m looking at a CPO P85D (Upstate NY driver) and drive 35k miles annually for my occasional commute. I’m nervous that Tesla’s fees are going to kill any gas, oil, combustion savings ... not to mention my bank accounts. I am waiting on the Tesla energy shingles when re-released. The number of solar panels needed for my homes energy consumption requires 72 panels... ouch. Maybe the shingles will be invaluable. Hope both work for my desire to decrease my carbon print. Thanks for your kindness in sharing your knowledge! Big fan. Any recommendations appreciated.

Hey Ben! Great video as always! But... please please please also consider the cost of tires and insurance costs. I think those would be other important factors that commuters will want to take into account. I know that the Model 3 is a luxury car and should be compared to other luxury cars but would still be interesting to see the cost of tires and insurance costs besides gas cost savings. Would also be interested in seeing how the Model 3 stacks up against hybrid vehicles and other economy cars like the Prius.

We are from San Diego. Our commute is less than 10 miles a day (from home/gym, gym/work, work/errands). Battery consumption can be up to 50% more than the distance that its actually driven (total of 20 miles) with only 10 actual miles driven by the odometer. We are a bit disappointed. We know that AC takes quite some energy but it seems a bit excessive in this situation. OAT (outside ambient temperature is about 86ºF). Internal temperature in the Model 3 can be 120ºF plus when parked and exposed to the sun. Any thoughts Ben? Would love to hear your opinion since we have the same car as you do. Best Regards,

You didn't add in the cost savings of maintenance. Not having to change your oil every other month (or less) adds up. Then there are transmission services, engine air filters, etc. Things that the Tesla doesn't need done to it because there is no engine or transmission. The potential cost savings would really be higher than what you stated.

Absolutely a great long commute car and significantly more affordable than it may seem. 110mi round trip daily commute here, were previously paying over $4/gal for 91 octane in a 2008 Acura that was getting about 28mpg combined. The gas savings alone offset a large majority of the car payment compared to what we were already paying for just gas. The amazing vehicle, autopilot, etc. all just icing on the cake. Hands down one of the best decisions you could make if you are saddled with a long commute and can't make other changes to get rid of it.
@arifsaleem3028

I would add that it's vital, absolutely vital, to get on a time-of-use/EV electricity rate plan if you actually want to realize the gas savings (or do solar if you're able, etc.) for a long commute. Or find other free/cheap charging options. If you're lazy about that and just stick to your old rate plan (likely tiered), your savings won't be nearly as much.

Ben, I don't understand something. Why is it that you take off 20% of the range of the Model 3, but use 100% of the range/mileage of the ICE vehicle? I have literally NEVER had an ICE car in which I got the advertised mpg, or even really very close to it. Sure, cold weather or driving really fast can significantly, negatively affect the range of an EV, but hot weather and traffic greatly reduce the mileage/range of an ICEV. Are you just trying to be really conservative in your estimates of how much one would save by driving an EV? If not, then I think you should add a multiplier to the range/mileage of the ICEV like you do to the EVs when you do these comparisons. Thanks for the video.
@bernardoflores4765
@bernardoflores4765 6 жыл бұрын
I believe it's to keep the battery's life longer. As when a lithium ion battery fully charges and discharges it's worse for its lifespan. So the car automatically warns against a full 100% charge and a 0% discharge. It's essentially to keep the car lifespan longer. But there is a setting where you can have 100% for long distance travel, but it's not recommended none the less
@lijay1
@lijay1 6 жыл бұрын
My question isn't about charge level. But if you watch the video again, he's charging to 90% but estimating only 80% of claimed mileage of his 90% charge. And I'm asking why add a multiplier for real-world mileage to the EV, but not to the ICEV?
@lanesalbacka1821
@lanesalbacka1821 6 жыл бұрын
Because people get waaaaaaay more butt hurt a out EVs not getting their advertised ranged than they do about ICE vehicles. Same thing with plug ins and hybrids. People loose their minds over a 10% drop in fuel economy compared to what the EPA says they should get. But when they get only two thirds of what the EPA says they should get on their Mustang, they don't don't even bat an eye. In fact, they celebrate by doing burnouts and running over pedestrians.

I've mapped out many of our routes and most require a stop in the middle somewhere. I can't even imagine not having to pay for regular fuel. By the way I live in the Chicago suburbs and drive all over to places such as Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan and Iowa. Our main problem is hitting animals on the road. It's pretty crazy but most of our drivers have hit something at one point or another. Your thoughts?

The EV-1 still existed at that time, but was only rated at 85 miles in the base version, and of course had rather high Lease payments. My commute was eased by the fact that I was traveling counter to the general pattern on the 605 freeway which I traversed end to end, and within walking distance of my job was a Saturn Dealership which handled the leases in that area and could charge the EV-1 if I could make some arrangements with them, though that was unlikely. I passed on the opportunity, and eventually bought a Prius when the car I had been using began to burn too much oil.

That is easy. What I want for Tesla is also to cater to those people who has doesn't rake in the miles with the car always parked at home. They should enable Power Wall like capability with their cars probably with an energy capacity similar to an average work commute.

You may want to dial it in with colder temps too... :-) . Also, do you know what the range will be on the standard battery? if it is 100 miles less, that makes your figures 190 miles at 90% and 152 miles @ 80% of that. That really eats into it, however, i don't know many people that have a commute greater than 152 miles. Even at 50 miles each way, that gives you a lot of reserve. What do you think?

Have you hear of other people complaining about this? Best regards

This works well in the winter well. I have the opportunity on the work load, and thus there are no ranges feared Thank you for your Ben Ben always detailed investigations

But I do this regularly and ZERO issues. My thoughts...absolutely you can do 200 miles per day easy!! Moreover, only setting your base charge to 80%. Ben is losing miles because of 20” rims and he chose turbines that are heavy as heck. My 19” aftermarket are same weight as 18” aeros and I went to Vegas from LA without having to stop. All about SPEED. Mind u I was doing 90 at times with traffic and still made it. Just my .02.

If you are doing 200 miles per day, isn't that like doing a road trip? Then you would charge to 100%, 310 miles. 80% of that is 248 miles. Obviously, you would have your charge end just before you left for work. 48 miles is plenty of buffer. On a side note, my commute is about 80 miles and I am averaging 220wh/mile (90% highway at 60mph average). I am getting better than expected efficiency.

You did not address S.O.C (State of Charge). Most people recommend not going below 20% minimum and 80% maximum to avoid premature battery degradation. Elon even mentions 30% and 70% in a perfect world. Also, if this person really is forced to do level-1 charging at work they could only expect about 30 additional miles per day max if they only had access to a 115v wall outlet. Lastly, what if they don't live in Southern California and have to contend with winter.... I like these videos but am concerned with the bias related to every video being a possible referral versus posts by Nikki and Alex who seem to be drinking less of the Tesla cool aid. I do however admit that the opportunity for long term savings with an EV or a car like the Volt or I3 Rex is huge!!

I recently rented a model 3 long-range on turo I had a 300-mile woman I did not drive the car 300 miles I drove it around 200 miles and I found that I averaged 218 watts per mile efficiency during the time I had the car which comes out to 4.7 miles per kilowatt but I do live at a higher altitude where people who live at higher altitudes are actually going to get higher efficiency out of the car because it is electric where is they will get a reduced efficiency out of a gasoline-powered vehicle and it gets better fuel economy if it's gas powered at sea level than it does it higher altitude because it has more power to spare and talking about the 200 mile a day commute that person could be driving Uber or Lyft that is what I do for a living and I find that I do about 1,000 to 1200 miles a week on average being a full-time Uber driver so their commute mileage on a daily basis is in line with somebody who does rideshare if I were to order a model 3 I would order a black one with the premium interior which makes it a $50,000 car as much as I would like to upgrade the extra $5,000 for dual motors being in Colorado I don't think that would be necessary at all just as long as I put a good all season tire on the car it would handle the snow just as good probably even better than the car I have now as I said I found in my driving because my driving Style is a smooth one where I'm trying to be smooth that's what I have been conditioned myself for for over a year of being a full-time Uber driver as well as the fact that I haven't driving a Prius for over 10 months now and actually doing driving techniques in a Prius that would also help you get better efficiency and a electric vehicle I drove the car 163 miles before I went and charged it and I picked the car up with 279 miles on it actually thinking back and looking at the cars trip computer and going down 2 miles since last charge I think I was looking at more than that I think I was at 100 in 70 maybe a hundred and eighty miles since last charge and when I went to go charge up the car it still said it had a hundred and ten miles so I found that the car would easily do a 200-mile commute based on my driving but then again I have put over 50,000 miles on a Toyota Prius trying to drive it efficiently as well to maximize the overall efficiency and get better gas mileage including not doing harsh acceleration and anticipating coming to a stop or I could use light regenerative braking to help me come to a stop versus heavy regenerative braking because even on the model 3 you only have 80% efficiency on regenerative braking versus 100% efficiency on coasting to a stop but you do have to use a little bit of regenerative braking to help you slow down in the model 3 one thing I liked about the model 3 when I had it is just how much regenerative braking you could get out of it it was really a one pedal Driving Experience compared to my 2007 Prius and I would definitely like to get one now and I am actually really thinking about doing that for those of you who are Uber and Lyft drivers think about your area that you are driving in because the car would qualify for Uber select as well as Uber black and it would drive every category on lift except for Lyft plus and basically on Uber everything except for uberxl and Uber SUV but for the Uber categories like uber black you would need to get commercial plates and commercial insurance on the car so if you live in a market where black and select rides are popular or the higher up categories like Lyft Lux then it would definitely be worth it to get the car cuz the much higher paying rate that you will get off of driving those categories will definitely help to offset the extra cost of the car especially given how much extra Uber black pays over uberX and Lyft Lux pays over Lyft and Lyft line.

The Zoe is always connected to the internet but it seems BMS etc only comes to life when you turn the car on. It does suggest to me that if you do a very low mileage in a Tesla and it is parked nearly all of the time the power consumption would be very high per mile driven compared with other EVs. Tesla are supposed to be about sustainability, I'd have thought any waste of this kind undesirable (given that in most cases the power doesn't come from 100% renewable sources).

Run some number Robert. I lose about 5 to 7 miles parked over night. At 310 miles on a charge, that's 310/75 kilowatt battery pack is 4.1333. This mean its 4.133 miles per kilowatt. So I am losing about 2 kilowatts daily parked over night. I hope my math is correct. It's really hot in my area. I'll monitor it and will see if the drain in power are cause by weather.
@robsmith1a
@robsmith1a 6 жыл бұрын
Ben did some videos on phantom drain. The reply above said about 2kwh per day. I think this is quite a lot given that my car doesn't seem to lose any noticeable amount. If you leave a fifty percent charged car for 20 days it would lose most of that charge in that time. Quite a lot of wasted energy in my opinion if you spread that across hundreds of thousands of cars. I think most people would be fairly annoyed if their fuel tank half emptied in three weeks without being driven. I really like Tesla and support what they are doing but this does seem a bit of a flaw.

I guess the computer is on all of the time and it is using about 80 watts (if you assume 24 hours at 80w it comes to around 2 kwh). The question is whether this is reasonable for something if you leave it for a few weeks without use. I would have thought they could have put the computer into a very low power state unless is it actively updating things, hopefully this will improve over time. Most people probably don't think it matters much because they tend to waste lots of power anyway by leaving things switched on that don't need to be but the way I think it just seems wasteful and could catch you out if you charged the car up and expected to come back to a full battery after a few weeks away for instance.

Ben the true cost of ownership is not right. The model 3 still needs service and wear and tear (tires, brake pads). Also insurance is higher. For me driving that distance on a daily basis, I would get range anxiety and you need a real reliable car or it would cost you your job. Most Tesla are not reliable at this time. 4+ service visits a year for most people is too much. When I did a 180 mile commute for a year I did 2 service visits a year (when swapping winter tires). I drove a Renault Megane Diesel with a service interval of 18k miles a year. For me driving with autopilot didn't make me relaxed, but that's because I don't really trust it (drove it 3 times). All new cars are silent tbh.

200 miles a day is every Uber driver on the planet just about. And even with the Math given here the finances do not work out in your favor. You can buy a super nice Prius or Hyundai ioniq, Kia Niro or any other fuel efficient hybrid for less than half the price of the Tesla Model 3. You will never break even. And you're fronting the expense on the Tesla where I was on the gas powered car you're spending the money slowly over time on the gasoline and maintenance. I love electric vehicles I think the Teslas are super cool, and when they actually sell one for $22, 000 I might perhaps be interested if it has longer-range and faster charge times. The issue for Road Warriors like myself is that I might drive 200 miles and then something comes up and I've got to drive another 200 to 400 miles. gasoline powered cars give you the best flexibility when you don't know what your schedule is going to be and you don't know where you're going to end up at the end of the day. To me something like a used Chevy Volt would be the best of both worlds if you normally have a short commute to work like most people you would never use any gasoline, but if you needed to take a long trip or something came up and you had to take a trip the gas engines there to back you up.
