I'm in Germany and I'm driving my 3rd BMW x5 PHEV and was very upset when I saw the iX for the firs time. I consdidered myself a BMW fan and all of this was over in an instant. It not only messed up the looks but also the performance. Indeed, my next car will be the Model Y, which means your comparison results are confirming my own decision.

I live in Europe. Just sold my 2020 X5 M-Sport for a model Y performance. Model Y beats it in all areas and is cheap to run. Go Tesla!!

It will feel like a massive downgrade in many areas. The Model Y is somehow noisier on the Autobahn than my 1 Series BMW and has worse suspension. I don't want to imagine what it will be compared to the X5. The Model Y is great software on a bumpy chassis with mediocre seats. I suggest you do a test drive and don't look for confirmation from people that are highly biased and would pick the Tesla even if it had square wheels. The Model Y is easily the most over hyped vehicle.

@@MadDaCubeMy worse ride experience is with my mom's Model 3 RWD, I would not buy one given the experience of driving her Model 3 4 times so far. While, I loved driving the Model X on 300-mile day trips.

@@MadDaCube I have been a BMW fanboy for most of my life . But in 2019, I rented a Tesla Model 3 just to know what the hype was all about. I was so impressed by it that I ordered one on the next Monday, and never looked back. It is way more fun to drive than a comparable BMW, especially on our Swiss mountain roads. It is clearly the best AND cheapest car I ever owned... and, at age 65, I have owned quite a few.

Buttons are good sometimes, I would definitely prefer Tesla having few ceneter console buttons and a volume knob, but what Mercedes did with fake buttons on the steering wheel is absolutely criminal

Nice comparison. BMW riding its luxury brand status is one thing, but the real killer story is VW. The new ID7 as a 286 HP rear-wheel drive is actually more expensive than a Model Y LR AWD ?!?! I don’t see that selling. no matter how many KZbinrs get flown to a chateau in France 😂

I think it will sell to all those who have been buying VW for years and years. Many do not even go out and check what else is available. But other than that I think even the praised ID.7 will have a hard time against a model Y. Tesla is constantly improving the manufacturing efficiency and due to Wrights law the COGS per vehicle will go down and down so the price tag on the car will go down over time. That is not good news for those manufacfurers that do not produce cars at high volumes of individual models.

@@jianwei2009 I think both build quality and ride quality are a moot point by now. Other than for car reviewers that have to write and film something and test a huge number of cars a year, for normal buyers they are threshold categories. Threshold meaning, it just has to be good enough. The User interface is also an interesting point. I would argue that any regular iOS or Android user is right at home in a Tesla. All others are a rapidly aging and shrinking part that Tesla will happily have served by the old guard competition.

your comparing a Tesla model Y performance which is a top spec model Y to a base model bmw ix 40e. wouldn't the ix 50e fit more better in this comparison? also the EPA for the IX 50e is underrated and the IX is a bigger car compared to the Model y and is a rival to the model x so I don't think its a fair comparison plus the euro spec and American spec cars are different.

Oh man, my Tez Model 3 is in for repair after some BMw driver hit it and drove off. I got them on sentry so they are now paying for me to drive a BMW Ix, talk about ironic. The Ix is ok but utterly ridiculously over priced and just rubbish tech compared to Tez. Way too many buttons, rubbish range, not that smooth as you say. And its like £25k more than my model 3. Great example of how far behind these ICE companies are. Its a nice drive but the Tesla is way easier to live with, much much better tech, cheaper, 100+ miles more range. Who the hell would want to pay £80k for something worse? So off point its crazy. And the gimmicky sound effects are fun but dumb. I drove bmw for 12 years before I got the Model 3. I am still not coming back. No way Jose. And an insane, mind boggling number of buttons.

drove the IX 40xdrive. driving the model3 / Y just feels...mehh. yeah, the range is very good, however the finishing touches on the German brands are leagues ahead.

The comfort in the iX is superb. The build quality ist superb. The seats r superb. The towing capability is much better than the one of the Model Y. The bang 4 the bug ist on the side of the tesla…

I always have to ride gain on your videos, reducing the volume during the bumper music, and then increasing during the content. At the end, in particular, I have to dump volume in a hurry to avoid distressing my family.

Most car reviews centre on the driving experience, comfort, feeling of luxury, ease of use…. Yours is focused on statistics. The number of car sales is not necessarily a measure of desirability. Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach make terrific luxury cars, but their sales are much lower than Ford’s. That does not make a Ford a better car - in fact the exact opposite. Nobody needs a car that can do 0-60 in 3 seconds or 150 mph. You complain about all the buttons, but many people dislike the Tesla’s minimalist approach and prefer to use buttons. Tesla’s don’t provide a speedometer directly in front of you, or a head-up display. BMWs feel like luxury cars, whereas Teslas feel more mass produced. I own a BMW i4 and I agree that the acceleration in Sport Mode can feel like a kick in the back. However, if you put it in Comfort or ECO Pro Mode, the acceleration is still quick, but smoother. There is no doubt that Tesla has better engineering in terms of space usage and efficiency. Other manufacturers can’t compete with FSD, but you have to pay for that. The Model Y clearly hits the sweet spot for the mass market, but BMW still has a place. I test drove a Model 3 twice, but I found the ride was too twitchy on bumpy roads and it just did not quite have the luxury feel. Maybe if I had test driven a Highland, I would have bought it. I bought a used i4 with 4,000 miles on the clock to get the price down to a reasonable level. I am extremely happy with it. I have immense respect for Elon Musk as an engineer and for what Tesla has achieved, but there are good reasons to buy BMW EVs. Judging from the Facebook BMW i4 forum, owners absolutely love them and I’m sure this applies to the iX.

I have had the model S from 2014 since early 2016 and have driven 372.000km and it has been an amazing ride since then. What most people overlook or don't know is how many new functions the car has gotten since I got it. Even thought the car is close to 10 years old it does not feel that old. Except for cameras the car is completely uptodate. I wanted to get a new car and the new model S although desirable is too expensive for me right now and also has too little spacew for my use, so I bought a new model Y LR AWD which is less than half the price of the model S LR AWD in my country.

Hey guys, do you have any information on the Model Y? I went online to order a model Y Performance and I am unable to do that! The Model Y online interface has removed the "Custom Order" button and replaced it with "Shop Available". So Tesla right now is forcing people to buy the existing stock of Model Y, you cannot configure and order one. And within a 200 mile radius of my home there are no Model Y performance models available. What the heck is going on? Do you think this is because Tesla wants to clear out the existing stock of Model Y because the Juniper Refresh Model Y is actually ready early!?!?! Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Regarding the iX fake grill. I think there are sensors behind the beaver teeth. It is also "self healing" in the case of stone chips - sit the car in warm to hot sun for 20 mins to heal the chips. I'm pretty sure there is some functionality there that isn't obvious, but I do agree it looks a bit like a cheap plastic stick on. In Australia the "real world" range is 600kms+ for the iX50, so perhaps we have a version with a bigger battery pack than the USA? Our family has both a Tesla Model 3 Long Range, and the BMW iX50. I agree with many of the comments that you make, but the BMW beats the Tesla hands down for comfort on long drives - and we have plenty of those in Australia. I enjoy your channel.

RE: The BMW acceleration; I think the words you were looking for were Ease In and Ease Out. Surprised coming from an 3D modeling/animation background, you didn't think of these.

About space: I had 1988 to 1995 a Renault Espace. Only 4,365 mm long, but 3,000 l space. Just right now, I drive a Dacia Lodgy. 4,500 mm long, 2,620 l space.

since it's ideal to only use the 20% to 80% portion of your battery, ideally you'd want at least a 335 mile EPA range so that a drive from 80% to 20% will go about 200 miles.

Exactly this. A lot of people don't realize that, the larger the battery, the less lifetime charge cycles, the less number of dc fast charging stops necessary over the life of the vehicle, etc. It is best to buy an EV with the largest possible battery one can afford.

In 2021, 52% of all trips, including all modes of transportation, were less than three miles, with 28% of trips less than one mile. Just 2% of all trips were greater than 50 miles, and 1% over 70 miles. A SR Tesla can road trip at the same speed as an ICE - 1000km in under 10 hours with normal comfort stops. Dahn's analysis is 200 miles range is correct for an EV. His recommendation for maximizing battery life is 30 -70% SOC. A 200 miles battery can do that for all urban use. @@nelsongarcia8959 Sure, but the number of charge cycles on the model Y RWD is actually 3 times higher than on the model Y LR! This is due to LFP batteries in the RWD model. So, lots of people are not aware of this 😊

Yes on a daily basis when you don't need longer range than from 20% to 80%, but there is no problem to charge to 100% now and then and drive it down to e.g. 10%.

The early model S performance cars had a brutal acceleration from zero, but the newer cars like model 3 or Y have a much more smooth although very fast acceleration.

Well now, how do billionaires Stefan Quandt and his sister Susanne Klatten react to all of this? They jointly own half the shares in the BMW company and should have some interest in this, e.g. will they remain billionaires if nothing is done to remedy the enormous gap?

Too late really. BMW chose to develop their EV platform as a shared platform that they can make hybrids and ICE cars with on the same production line. The downside is you cannot make a competitive EV on a shared platform. And now they have to spend several years making a dedicated EV platform and designing cars to build on it, then design dedicated EV production lines, then ramp production, and by the time they can try for the first time to seriously compete in EVs it will be 2027, which is just way too late.

It's still good to see more available EV options. Some folks (likely including Bill Gates, Joe Biden, Jeff Bezos, Dan O’Dowd, Missy Cummings, and many others) like the idea of EVs but don't like Tesla cars. The more options, the better.

It gets a lot worse for the specs. If I've found the correct numbers from a google search. The iX battery is 111.5kWh. the model y performance is 81kWh. Tesla continues to be miles ahead on battery technology. That is a ridiculous difference and the iX doesn't even get anywhere near the same range!! Something is VERY wrong at BMW. I figured it must be the drag coefficient. But no, the model Y is .23 and the iX is .25. not that big a difference considering the boxier look of the iX. you should compare the model X to this iX. how does that stack up?

drag coefficient is a multiplier. Multiply the HUGE frontal area of the iX times the coefficient = massive drag.

So rather than blow 70k on a BMW I’ll just get the XLR8 app for my iphone and get all of engine noises and more. I bet BMW didn’t check to see if there was an app for all the buttons on that dash. So much for just being a car company.

Not the correct comparison. The iX 50 should be compared to a standard Model X and the iX 60 should compare to a Model X Plaid. When BMW puts out a smaller electric SUV, compare that to the model Y.

Interesting, like you I was never a fan of the BMW grill. Now that I know it’s not even a real grill I like it even less. Sound like based on your review that they forgot the German luxury build and went more for gadgets over luxury. BMW normally is looked at luxury performance, to hear its jerky acceleration isn’t good. It’s only luxury is is can sound like a performance gas car. For me I am more interested in the silence but killer performance. Let me see effect of performance not hear it.

Dismal specs on the Low end model, they have a manufacturing cost problem, their Stripped down model isn’t affordable OR desirable. As for the decal fanboy Grill - Big mistake to make product Badging so Visible, it smacks of "borrowing" from past glory. The Lexus-400 was introduced in 1989 along with the Infinity Q45, Lexus sold about 10X-1, in Large part because the Infinity had a gaudy logo-samurai/Badge on the grill that made it look cheap and brassy, along with too much Chrome, the rest is history. Never compare the base price of a Tesla with a BMW. A BMW makes no sense without all the optional packages. The real price is much higher. A full speced iX xDrive50 is actually around 115 000€ in Germany.

This review is bogus. You are comparing the top end Model Y against the bottom end trim BMW iX. Furthermore, the 40 trim of the iX you feature is discontinued. Why bother reviewing a car that has been deprecated by the manufacturer? Compare the Y against the iX eDrive50 to make this a fair comparison.

When you looked at the prices for European spec versus USA spec you where not looking at the same car. The European version was an iX40 while the USA one where an iX50 which is the larger battery option. Just FYI. Otherwise love your videos👍😊

The BMW smashes the Tesla on price, if by that you mean that buying the much more expensive vehicle better signifies that you are flush enough to not care how much a vehicle cost, and so consumed by other interests or more important matters that you don't care about performance, reliability, utility or any other objective measure of a car (excepting that tight turning radius, that could be useful in a tight parking garage ... though the larger external dimensions of the BMW may reduce the benefit, there). Maybe if you are a button fetishist or prefer to have an illusion of being in an older technology car, the BMW will win. Perhaps, the goal to to signal how well off you are, the electric Rolls Royce would be the car for you, but I guess I can see where the bells and whistles in the BMW might incite some interest..... Of course, if you plan to use the EV on long trips in the USA, there is currently no better choice than a Tesla, due to the much better charging network available.

It depends on what you are looking for. Tesla better value. BMW better quality of ride and finish. If you come from a consumer car like Honda/Toyota/Fiat you probably would love the Model Y, but if you come from Driving a model 7 BMW, S Class MB or something nicer the ride quality and finish of the Model Y is not near to the one of the iX. If the iX60M was the same price of the Model Y performance my choice would be iX60 M. At twice the price probably Tesla would make more sense to most buyers

The problem is that BMW is pretending like this is a premium product, while being much less premium in all key features besides maybe interior quality. Low sales is their own fault with labeling and having unrealistic prices.

What is with Germany. Before Tesla there was no question to the Germans command of the motor vehicle industry now they are just floundering around like idiots which is represented in this car and the merc eqs. I love Tesla, but the Model Y is mostly inferior because BMW management are idiots. These BMW EVs are shared platform vehicles, built on a line and platform they can also make hybrids and ICE cars on. This results inevitably in a heavy inefficient EV with poor handling and poor cargo space that costs a lot. The justification BMW gave was that this will allow them to meet unpredictable EV demand, it gives production flexibility. As I said back in 2018 when BMW announced this shared platform boondoggle, it will also result in conpromisemobiles very few people want to buy, and help bankrupt BMW.

You forgot to mention: The suspension of the Tesla Model Y is terrible. I own a model Y and a BMW X5. The BMW has much better suspension when you drive over potholes.

I agree. Spend a couple of thousand dollars and get aftermarket coil overs for your Tesla. Makes the ride super good and still is much much cheaper than the BMW. Tesla's new model Y (next year?) will most likely have the better suspension found in their new model 3.

BMW iX is more in the class of Model X. But The BMW is lot more luxury. More quiet than the Model X and better susension. Model Y feels like a horse-drawn carriage compared to iX.
