My take is the all star game doesn't have to be competitive at all to be enjoyable. It just has to be a basketball game. In the early 2000s I remember it was just a fun exhibition game where we could see Kobe playing with Garnett or Duncan receiving lobs from Nash. It was sort of a "what if x and y player played in the same team" type of thing. The problem today is that what we get doesn't even resemble a basketball game. It just feels like a bunch of guys staying after practice and messing around with a basketball.

That’s generally how I look at it. I just like seeing all the stars out there having fun and going for some big spots. I don’t personally need it to be competitive.

I hate the idea of the Allstate game deciding the finals homecourt. But I think a good hybrid of that is it is east west and the game will count as an 83rd game towards the standings. So if the east beats the west then every team on the east gets a win and every team in the west gets a loss. This allows for whichever conference loses then they can still make up the ground and get nba finals on their homecourt. This also would not effect the playoff race as it keeps everyone in the conference’s the same

You can't really blame the players for not going hard in a game that means nothing and really should continue to be like that. An idea I saw was to make a third team called the snub team and have them play the losers. Then, the winners of that game get the all-star selections on their resume, and the losers don't. Granted, you'd have to shorten the game to fit both of them in, but the teams might actually try so they don't have to play again and risk losing that appearance. Plus, it gives the snubs a chance to prove that maybe they should've been selected.

I agree with your point about choosing based on conferences, with depth disparities between the conferences allowing certain less deserving players to make the game over other more deserving players, but even in the current format they still pick the players based on conferences. Even with the Team LeBron and Team Giannis stuff, you have a pool of 12 players from the East and 12 from the West. Going back to a pure conference format would not change any of that. If anything, I think the number of players they pick per position is a bigger problem. If they went back to pure East vs West and got rid of the frontcourt backcourt bullshit, I think it would be fine.

As much as a more competitive all star game would be great, I would prefer to keep it the way it is because load management is already a huge issue in the nba so the all stars that do play in the game don’t try because they have a whole other half of a season to play and with how the style of the game is today and how the players are more injury prone more now than ever, they might get hurt when they play which would be a big waste. If there is a way to fix it, take the 3 point line out of the game for either the whole game or just the 4th quarter (because of the target score) since most of the shots in recent all star games are either deep ass 3s or dunks but if you take it out, you might end up getting a 90s or early 2000s type all star game since they didn’t shoot threes which gave them no real choice but to play defense.

The MLB had home field in the World Series going to the team from the winning league in the All Star game for about 10 years or so. This was in the midst of the AL absolutely dominating the All Star Game with some crazy long winning streak. It just so happened that the AL team often had the better record than the NL team so they would've had home field anyways, but home field being attached to the All Star game wasn't a very popular idea. I myself absolutely hated it.

I think the all-star game mvp should have more rights to get the regular season mvp. See, the problem with the mvp votings is a fight between a great player carrying a bad team vs the lone best player on the best team. But, if that player is still relied on come the time that he plays with all the greats in the league, then that is a true determinant that he is the most valuable player; not only by his team but to all the potential MVPs that are before him.

Make East vs West. The winning conference gets an extra all star next year, as a wild card player or at the expense of the loser. You can even extend this to two years to make it more interesting; win two years in a row, get two extra all stars, one wild card spot, and one from the losing team.

Maybe monetize defensive stats. This is just off the top of my head. Maybe have a million for the player with the most blocks... Another mill for the guy with the most steals. Put a solid bag together for the team that allows the least points. This could possibly make it more interesting. The NBA would have to stop being so f'n cheap though. They make billions, but they're so cheap. That could do wonders for the slam dunk contest too. It was better this year, but still never draws any superstars like it did back in the day.

Defense is actively discouraged, but we have guys in the game who are All Stars because of what they bring to that side of the court, so encourage them to show it. I recognize that defense is a team concept with all the switches and what not, but we might at least get some rim protection and reduce the wide open lay-ups and dunks.

And nba will continue to drop live numbers. 2. The game last year was good/great. But I’ve always waited til the 4th quarter to see if the game is close. If it’s close they will play hard usually, at least last 6 min where they will have the best 5 to close the game. But it makes no sense for all stars to try hard in a game that doesn’t affect the overall goal of a player. The all star game used to be a big deal because you couldn’t always watch the bulls if you weren’t in Chicago. But now it’s much easier to watch your favorite player play every single game. Because of that, the all star game has lost its value.

2 things I think could help fix the ASG 1. Make it East vs West again, the whole "team captain" thing is dumb anyway, because you know it's always gonna be Lebron vs either KD or Giannis 2. Have the conference winner get home-court advantage in the NBA finals. This was something the MLB actually did for a while a few years back, until they cancelled it, but thats a pretty big incentive to play a little harder if it means you have a chance to have 4 home games in the finals.

Replace it with smaller lighthearted games and it will be more fun to watch. You can still do the charity thing and honestly it'll be a lot more motivating to the players involved because their contributions will have a much bigger impact on which charity gets the money. There is one sport that has an equivalent of the All-Star game that players take deadly seriously. In the Australian professional rugby league competition, the NRL, there is a three game series played in the middle of the season called State of Origin. Ignoring a bunch of exceptions for the sake of KZbin comment brevity, players represent the State in which they grew up playing rugby league. The NRL is only big in two States - Queensland and New South Wales - so the series is just played between those two teams (players that don't meet eligibility requirements for one of the States are ineligible to play). The series taps into hometown loyalty - regardless of where somebody is currently playing, in State of Origin they represent where they're from, and therefore represent the team they grew up supporting. Obviously to port this to the NBA would be trickier because you don't have just two States - you need to deal with not just the 50 U.S States, but also the fact that a solid chunk of the best players in the league are internationals and you'd probably want them represented in some capacity. You'd probably look to divide the US into a set of divisions that may well look similar to the existing divisions, although you'd want them to be stable even if franchises move around so they might not match exactly. Let's say for argument's sake that you do just use the existing divisions, at least for the names. Players are assigned to the division that matches where they went to high school, or can apply to represent a different division if they grew up somewhere else and moved for high school. Additionally, we'll have a team for European players, and a team for Rest of the World (RoW). That gives 8 teams, which lends itself to a 3 game elimination bracket. So, expand the All-Star weekend to run over 5 days. On the first day, third, and fifth days, you play a round of the All-Star series. You could fully randomise the bracket, or you could make sure all teams from each conference are on the same side of the bracket until the final with just Europe and RoW fully randomised as to where they end up. Either way, all 8 teams play on the first day; the 4 winners advance to day 3; then the two winners play in the final on day 5. There's also a question of how you handle selection - in State of Origin, selection for each team is handled by a separate organisation for each State, not by fan voting (since you wouldn't want fans of the opposite team trying to sabotage selection of the other team). Really not sure how to fix that here - maybe start with a fan vote, but then have a commissioner and/or coach veto option to block obviously suboptimal picks? It would probably take some time for this concept to really take root. You'd likely get some initial interest, which would then wane until players start entering the competition who grew up watching the games and cheering for their division. At that point, there's motivation for players to take it seriously: hometown loyalty. You play hard for the team you grew up cheering for.

After the season. Play the game before the conference finals and do it pro bowl style. Players still remaining in the playoffs sit out like in the NFL and set some sort of cash incentive. Yes it won't do a lot but it does something. Plus it re engages fans who's teams are out.

It’s all about rivalries. In the past players wanted to beat each other. It’s about pride. Nowadays if they can’t beat someone, they’ll just go join them or they recruit another star. Rivalry is dead and it’s boring for fans. I’d rather watch a low scoring 90’s Bulls-Knicks or Knicks-Heat game than a high scoring game these days

Btw they’re more people watching NBA in China than America. Never mind the rest of the world.
