Ever wondered how many FPS the human eye can see? We found an average gamer and put him in front of a 60Hz monitor and a 120Hz monitor to see if he could tell the difference in a blind taste test!

How the fuck do you want to see a difference between 60 and 120 Hz if the game just runs 80 fps in "not-doing-anythjng"? That means the fps drop at least to 70-65 while shooting what makes a difference of 5-10 pictures per second. Just a robot would be able to notice that. You should have choosen Counter-Strike for testing...

This is such a pointless video.. what's the point of using a 120hz monitor if your GPU only gets 84fps while looking at the floor? He should have had 3 of those 680s in SLI..

^ exactly and anyway at the moment it seems that most devs are aiming to get 60 on the common high end equipment (7970 - R9 290X and NVidia equivalent) and not bother to think about higher frames leaving people on 120/144hz monitors stuck at what they think are sub par frames unless they spend loads of money on a lot of high end equipment tl;dr 120/144hz are still pretty much only available to people with lots of money because there are very few devs who try and make their game run at that on your standard hardware (I apologise for any mistakes or things that do not make much sense/ sound a bit strange i'm not too good at writing down what goes on in my head ;_;)

+Bruno Czech The answer is a partial yes. It depends if you're watching 1080p 120hz vs 1440p 120hz. There are a variations upon every test and the biggest difference is "feeling" in every test. But loosely translated and simplified, to notice, you need the FPS to be as high as the hertz to actually see the advantage. I'm running a 980ti on an acer predator xb271hu (I always have to google it to copy and paste because I love this monitor lol) and the difference is unfuckingbelievable both in sight and feel. But like I said. You need to specs to match or you'll "bottleneck" in the same sense if you have a shitty cpu with an amazing gpu. Or vice versa. All this shit comes at the price of $$$. Is it worth it? I goddamn well think so. I'll never play on 60hz ever again and am still trying to sell my triple Pavillion 23xw's lol.

Considering that the game was running at 84 fps, also allowing for fluctuations in fps, this might not have been very accurate. It's better to test with a game that could get a constant 120 fps without any fluctuations.

for all the people that think they know some shit but don't,,, let me clarify something for ya ,,, frames and Hz ARE NOT the same thing,,, Hz - how many times your screen refreshes per second. FPS - how many times per second that your computer is building a frame this being said if your monitor will only go to 60hz its visually a waste to push more than 60 frames,,, but the more frames the more fluid your game will FEEL, but not necessarily look better. So more frames is always better, that is unless visual quality is more important to you than feel, and you have to sacrifice quality to get those frames, if not then turn up the quality and lose the frames,,, but if fluid game feel is important to you over quality then kill some quality to get your frames and this is the truth, thank you
@scottmartin3679
@scottmartin3679 10 жыл бұрын
You are correct that frames and Hz are not the same it is possible to get a couple of hundred frames a second at 60 Hz but you must disable V-sync in advanced 3d options. Which as you said decreases quality in the form of page tearing (jittery frames). I wasn't trying to write a book on the subject, and I see how my choice of words could be rather misleading. However Most people understand all this already that are hardcore gamers, and the test was about telling a difference in visual quality between 60 and 120 Hz and With V-sync enabled for quality images, provided the graphics card is capable of sustaining the framerate of 60 and 120 with current game settings, at 60 Hz you are capped at 60 frames a second and will be running a constant 60 frames a second. the same applies to 120. So from that standpoint even though they are different definition wise, one still dictates the other in a quality monitor test setting, not so in a graphics card performance test, but that was not what this was, is where I was coming from. I know some shit or I would not have spoken.
@Kenckaplus
@Kenckaplus 9 жыл бұрын
Let's do some math... If your frame rate is at most 60 FPS, then 120 Hz will look the same as 60 Hz. If your frame rate is at least 120 FPS, then 120 Hz will look better than 60 Hz. Likewise... Assuming you have a 60 Hz monitor, 120 FPS will look the same as 60 FPS. Assuming you have a 120 Hz monitor, 120 FPS will look better than 60 FPS.

Kencka fk I completely agree with you
@Sevival
@Sevival 9 жыл бұрын
Kencka fk wrong. Refresh rate means way more MORE than just fps. 120hz is generally always more comfortable to watch, doesn matter how high the framerate or if you're even gaming, 120hz reduces flickering and eyestrain, and adds up to the smoothness of fast images (by actually inserting frames)
@Kenckaplus
@Kenckaplus 9 жыл бұрын
Sevival Are you saying that it makes a difference to view a still image in a monitor that updates its buffer 120 times per second as opposed to only 60 times per second? You are just changing bits for bits of the same value.
@mattd6931
@mattd6931 9 жыл бұрын
Sevival The Flicker on the old CRT monitors was caused because each pixel blanked itself between each frame. Thus some people were able to SEE the blanking as a flickering on screen. Higher refresh rates negated that issue. Since activated LCD pixels do not flash on/off between frames, LCD monitors exhibit NO refresh-induced flicker, no matter how low the refresh rate. If you are looking at a still image, you will not be able to tell the difference between a 60Hz LCD monitor and a 120Hz LCD monitor. Noticeable differences only begin to occur when changes on screen start happening. You will notice the increased refresh rate then as smoother animation, because additional frames are generated - but ONLY when your graphics card is rendering equal to, or more FPS than the refresh rate of your LCD monitor. If you are running a game at 60FPS, on a 120Hz monitor, it will just display the same frame twice as long. (Ie. It'll 'paint' the same frame twice.) It'd be just the same as playing it on a 60Hz LCD monitor. Any effect you believe you're seeing is a placebo.
@Kenckaplus
@Kenckaplus 9 жыл бұрын
Matt D Hey. Thanks for the explanation. So the flickering was indeed a problem with CRT monitors, then what I said only works for modern LCD monitors.

If you want to test your theory run you hand back and forth in front of your face and watch the blur occur. Video games have to add that blur in post processing to simulate it on higher fps games. When playing video games do you want this.... no! could you imagine trying to shoot a blurry character darting across the screen. You would be livid not being able to make out things in racing games. So we humans in real-life can't see higher than around 24 fps but in a videogame, we wouldn't want out human shortcomings getting in the way of our kill streak.

As people have said before, the test is invalid if your not hitting 120 fps @ 120 Hz. If your game/hardware settings are allowing max of 85 fps that means most likely during action it is dipping to 50 - 60 range, if not lower. So for your test , he is only seeing the game above 60 Hz when there is no action, and when there is no action, there's no way to tell if its 60 or 85. But you can certainly tell 60 to 120 just by spinning a quick circle a time or two. Nobody would get that wrong 20 out of 20 times its that night and day a difference.

Anyone, absolutely ANYONE, who suggests that humans aren't capable of seeing above any framerate below multiple hundreds is talking shit. I can tell the difference between 60Hz and 120Hz just moving the mouse cursor or opening a window. If my computer boots up and for some reason the output's not set to 120Hz (happens occasionally), I can tell almost immediately. If there are people out there that genuinely can't tell the difference, they've either got really horrendous eyesight or there's something up with the way their brain is processing it.
@Neosaigo
@Neosaigo 9 жыл бұрын
The problem comes to people's definition of 'seeing' and 'detecting'. The human eye is capable of detecting much higher frame rate than what is currently available on the market, but no human eye can see beyond 60 frames per second except for people with exceptional vision. Detection is quick and broad but cannot handle too much detail, actually seeing is a bit slower and more narrow but allow for more details. From 1-30 frames, almost all people of normal eye sight can piece together each individual frames as a sequence in the correct order. 31-60 frames people can still do it, but varies depending on individuals. However beyond 60 frames while your eyes can detect the fluctuation, but you will not be able to piece the sequence together in order frame by frame. The difference between seeing and detecting is similar to having a jet passing by you really quickly, you will recognize something in the shape of a jet pass you by, but very few can piece together the details of what they saw during the fly by, often the brain has to draw on past experiences or sometimes imagination to fill in the blank, which is why eye witness testimony is not always reliable. In a FPS game for example, you can tell if there is someone suddenly appear from a corner, but you may not be able to recognize them as friend or foe till a fraction of a second later or sometimes longer, hence why sports and games often use colors to differentiate between teams (a shortcut for the brain kind of). Ironically that is also when a lot of people made a few shots before realizing it was an ally. There is detecting, and then there is actually seeing. The eye can detect incredibly quickly, but to actually see depend on the brain's ability to make sense of the information which is quite a bit slower, especially if it is new information. For known information and patterns, the brain can draw on experience to "see" more quickly. Monitors faster than 60hz works because of the eye's ability to detect, but technically that isn't really seeing. On the other hand, there are examples of people who can practice enough to use detection as vision, such as in martial arts and baseball, playing video game may also train the eye the same way perhaps. Military and Law Enforcement however goes about it the other way, which is trying to speed up the process of seeing through training instead of relying on improving detection since there is no friendly fire setting and no do-overs in real life. 120hz monitor for example allows for better motion detection because of repeated frames, however if I give you a slide of frame 61 to 120 and ask you to find frame 89 with 10 tries it would be mostly luck since you were not seeing the frame, you were simply detecting it. The funny part is neither side is entirely correct or wrong in this case, it is just people over simplified eyesight as a single standard.

Neosaigo Bullshit. So the human eye cannot 'see' anything above 60fps? Then explain the test where a bunch of fighter pilots were stuck into a room where an image of a fighter jet was flashed up for 1/220'th of a second (equivalent to 1 frame in 220fps). ALL of them not only saw that there was a jet, they could IDENTIFY what jet it was. That would not be possible if we could not 'see' much detail above 60fps. And no, not every single figher pilot has 'exceptional' vision. I sure as hell don't have 'exceptional' vision (I wear contact lenses) yet I can tell the difference between 60fps and 120fps. It's night and day to me. I've heard the same from almost every person who's ever used a 120/144Hz display. And I play better when my games are hitting that 144fps rather than 60fps. Your argument seems to be a very contrived one hinging around strange definitions of 'detecting' and 'seeing'. I'm going to have to ask you to cite some related research to consider it as anything other than 'bullshit'.

***** After a lot of reading around and seeing other's thoughts, it appears that, when first shown the two different videos, a difference might be noticeable but most folks who are NOT Technophiles just can't tell exactly what it is thier noticing, even possibly to the point that they might say they can't notice anything, and it may just be to them the difference is minscule. Because of how varied dna and mutations can make peoples eyes see things differently, it seems incrediably unfair to say anyone and everyone can see 60 or above, even if there's the human potential to detect a bigger difference. It also seems insane to think that video frame rate and eye frame-rate can ever compare to each other anyway, video uses the effect gained from shutters to create motion without it creating a blur, but our eyes aren't shuttering when we see anything else, so we might be able to detect hundreds of non-video frames, but video frames? I'd say the jury is still out on that one. Everyone who I've ever heard say not being able to detect 60 or above frame rates is a sign of disease or bad eye-sight are the same people who are the tech junkies who have used a computer operating in 120 frames for years, and thus can't see anything else then it, they are really, really used to it, the rest of us are not. You don't hear anyone saying about the average person being able to see more then 60 frames outside of this angry techie crowd, and they are a huge minority.
@BlazeFirereign

chillin chum The average person has never seen content at framerates above 60fps, why would they claim to be able to see it? In any case, I'm absolutely not claiming that every human can - but the vast majority can. It's a much more subtle difference compared to the difference between 30fps and 60fps (which is most definitely visible to everyone who doesn't have awful eyesight), and I can definitely see that most people wouldn't see it first time. But it's one of those things - once you get used to it, you will definitely notice the difference and come to appreciate the improvement. It's not just a placebo efffect - if I plug my computer into a 144Hz display, simply by moving the monitor I can tell whether it's at 60Hz or 144Hz, and the latter is a LOT smoother. As for games...I suppose one way to look at it would be to compare it to SSDs. People who use a computer with SSD storage might not notice a huge difference at first. But once they've used one for a while and go back to a machine with mechanical storage, they WILL notice the difference in speed and responsiveness.

***** I meant that, once they do see 60 fps content, that it's a difficult to tell, but I meant that for 60 and above, as in 60-144 is where it gets harder to see it, your only helping me support that. As for 30-60, yeah, that's where it gets wierd, varied, but generally a lot easier to detect. And I'm fine with 60 being standard, I guess, with the caveat that we can still try to emulate the look of 30 where artistic expression when it is desired, and yes, I am concerned about losing the "movie-like" look, since I'm not against games that are hybrids with movies, against some folks thinking we should divorce the concept entirely, which seems ridiculous to me. Besides, consistent framerate is just as important, if not more so, then where the framerate is specifically at. throwing you off when it changes suddenly is just no good. And, as per usual, due to the many amounts of dollars it can take to obtain, i do not want to *ever* get used to anything past 60, because I still want to be able to enjoy games even when they presented in some "sub-par" manner, this is the part that bugs me most about this:"Yes, come to us, so you can be overly picky and have to spend a lot of money like us for a nice novelty." Novelties wear off real quick for me, and are thus not worth the money, I'll watch it once at a tradeshow or a demo at an electronics store, but otherwise, I want to live cheaply on my games and play any and all of them, so, I say no thanks to PC crazy performance numbers.

@BluePixelGaming
@BluePixelGaming 10 жыл бұрын
I know this video is old but it wasn't the best game to test it on. That section of the game does make your FPS plummet so even if you were switching between 60Hz and 120Hz there may have been only ~10fps difference. You need to test it again on a game that your system can easily do 120fps. That way you can properly test whether 60fps and 120fps is noticeable.
@sobekflakmonkey
@sobekflakmonkey 10 жыл бұрын
how is that a proper test though? giving it the easiest thing to run and then saying "Oh, SEE! theres a difference!" when in reality there isn't really that much of a difference, I think by just choosing a part from the game that you're going to be playing through anyway was a good decision...because those parts exist, and should be considered.
@BluePixelGaming
@BluePixelGaming 10 жыл бұрын
You not getting the point. The purpose of this test was to see if the average gamer could tell the difference between 60Hz and 120Hz. By using a game which is most likely only hitting 70fps doesn't give a proper result as when using the 120Hz option you would be getting 50 duplicate frames meaning that the end result it basically the same as just using 60Hz. To properly test whether or not the average gamer could tell the difference between 60 and 120fps you would need to use a game that your computer is capable of pumping out 120 unique frames. If it isn't then the test is pointless.

sobekflakmonkey I have watched the follow and although not perfect it is a better test of the difference in Hz simply due to the location he was in the game. Trever Grose You would need to exceed 75 fps on a 75 hz monitor to see 'lag'. Really you would be seeing tearing or breaks in the image. Frames per second depend on their refresh rate's limitations. Each hz is 1 screen re-draw per second. So if you are redrawing the screen 75 times per second, and running less than 75 frames per second, you will not have any problems. It's only when your frames per second exceed the number of times the screen is redrawn per second.

Linus, I know this video is old as crap but did you ever do a follow up? Also, if you did not, would you be able to repeat the experiment with a few other parameters? I noticed in the video the game was 80+ fps, would you do a game or graphical setting with a locked framerates of say 200 fps to avoid frame variance and the possibility of framerate drop? also, maybe a gsync or freesync monitor could help eliminate variables? my concern is that the 120hz may not have a full effect under 120fps or if the frames aren't synced with the refresh rate. Thanks!

I'm glad somebody already pointed out that he's testing the difference between a 60hz monitor and a 120hz monitor at ~80 fps. I understand that the video description is "Can the average gamer see more than 60hz". If this were truly about whether a gamer could see more than 60hz, then it would make sense to get the highest frame rate possible on the highest refresh rate monitor. In this case he has a 120hz monitor, so it would make sense to at least match with 120 fps. It doesn't make sense to half-ass the frame rate when you're only trying to prove whether or not he can see above 60hz.

yes, it's really easy.

Georg Franko The kind that were only console gamers and had almost no knowledge about PCs. Without buying a prebuilt, i'd have never had a chance at learning how to build computers and what not. Sure it was overpriced, I admit that. But it has lasted me pretty well, and the information i learned while using it was worth more than what I paid. I am now able to help my brother in law build his as he too has learned a lot from the very same PC. It helped me convert him from consoles.

it was consistently above 60 fps, so you should have been able to see a difference. can you tell the difference if a car is going 60mph, or 80, or 90? and more specifically could you tell if it was going at 90, and slowed to 60? just because it was not maxing it out at 120 fps does not invalidate the point. it was a solid 80-90 fps looking at stuff, and spiked up into triple digits at floor. not a big deal. 90 is a 50% increase from 60, he should have been able to tell the difference.

Well, on gaming it is not so much we actually see the difference between 60 FPS and 61 FPS, but it is the fluctuation and the disturbance in that fluctuation that we see. Meaning 120 FPS would effectively reduce the amount of fluctuation we can see on the screen as compared to 60 FPS. Basically going over to raise the minimum. In a perfect world where GPU always output at 60 FPS, no one can probably tell the difference, but we don't live in that world.
@MunchMoar

V-sync makes it constant 60 or 120 fps
@Neosaigo
@Neosaigo 10 жыл бұрын
MunchMoar It actually doesn't. V-Sync work by changing the timing between rendering and scan. The output of the GPU still fluctuates. Actually saying GPU can constantly pump out the same FPS is completely ludicrous. All V-Sync does is delaying the scan by repeating frames when the GPU cannot keep up to avoid artifacts such as tearing. However that leads to microstutter when the GPU dip below certain points or fails to meet the refresh rate of the monitor. You can lock FPS, but only when you are well over the limit, however that was never really V-Sync's goal. V-Sync was meant to address timing problems between refresh rate and GPU's output, but more as a patchwork solution that doesn't really address the root of the problem.

Neosaigo If the monitor response time is 1ms, we won't see any fluctuations if say the game runs at more than 60fps.
@Neosaigo

***** I think you've missed my point entirely. It has nothing to do SLI or xFire. What I am saying is that GPU doesn't output 60 FPS all the time. (What you usually see in-game are usually the average, not the actual GPU fluctuation) That is why people go for 120hz monitors and more GPU power in order to compensate for that flaw. I have a pair of GTX 780 ACX SC, actually I've been using SLI in more mainstream games that have good SLI profiles, but stick with a single GPU when the profile is not that good. Not sure where did you get the idea that I did not use SLI, nor was it the point.

***** Currently high frequency IPS monitor is not doable, the main reason being that IPS panel's focus is for color accuracy. Meaning for stuff like photoshop and video editing, it is obvious much superior to TN panels. Problem is IPS when raising the refresh rate start to lose their color accuracy. Some even become unstable and cause artifacts on the screen. Meaning until the day when IPS panels can maintain their color quality at a higher frequency, a TN panel is basically the only alternative when speed is required. People who hack the Korean panels to raise the refresh rate actually do so by sacrificing the color accuracy they had. Not the best of the both world, just a placebo effect based on personal bias. I have both IPS and TN panel and use them for different purposes, but of course the dream is always to have a IPS panel that can handle higher refresh rates. TN and IPS is not so much about "going back", just trade off one area for the other.

fps and refresh rate of a monitor are 2 compleetly different things. The card did't run at full 120fps but the monitor did. The monitor refreshes 120 frames every second so if the card runs at 60fps the monitor shows every frame 2 times. Annyway, refresh rate is such bullcrap and just a way to sell it and let people think 120 refresh rate is better. Above 60fps whe cant notice anny changes. thats why i recommend to always turn on v-sync if not your card will ALWAYS run at full power when not needed and generates alot of heat what will cost you you'r card to die faster. afcourse you can turn it off if you get belowe 60fps if you like it better and dont like the input lag.

@johns2975 9 жыл бұрын
evvo123 :Source WIKI: The refresh rate (most commonly the "vertical refresh rate", "vertical scan rate" for CRTs) is the number of times in a second that a display hardware updates its buffer. This is distinct from the measure of frame rate in that the refresh rate includes the repeated drawing of identical frames, while frame rate measures how often a video source can feed an entire frame of new data to a display" The actualy fps of the game depends on your card, your card and monitor are synced at 120hz so when your card isn't done rendering it sends the same picture until its done rendering the next frame. and so on. So the monitor is showing 120 frames per second.

I own a 144Hz monitor and every time I use my other pc (which runs at 60Hz), everything feels very choppy, specially in games and also in the movement of the mouse cursor. This guy probably wasn't prepared to tell the difference, or it could also be that the game wasn't reaching 120fps. Also, frame drops and stutter can mess with the fluidity, not allowing an inexperienced user to realize what's going on. In any case, the difference is very noticeable in my current rig, so my answer to that question would be: People who pay attention to detail, will likely notice the difference, people who don't know what to look for, will miss it. Also, the application MUST be capable of achieving and maintaining framerates close to 120/144...if it tops close to 60fps, then there won't be any noticeable difference.

I have my laptop at 96hz. I already created a slew of videos at 1080p 120fps, and I watched them at 80% speed so the 96fps and 96hz match up. From what I saw, the videos looked like real life. There was authentic motion blur, no frames visible and it was VERY clear. It looks like you are looking through a window. I would say 120hz to 160hz is the sweet spot for bright light and 90 to 120 for regular viewing. I have a Gopro hero 4 black edition btw.

using vsync makes this comepletely useless, the main appeal of 120hz is that your aiming feels more connected to your hand, everything you do immeadiately happens on screen. Vsync with it's input lag completely negates that effect.
@Calyx
@Calyx 9 жыл бұрын
Agreed. As an avid CS and Dota player, when I first got my BenQ XL2411Z I really noticed the diffrences. However, I never really used vsync because my rigs couldn't really handle it and it would just kill the fps but since I built a beastly rig last year, oh boy. Now Linus also ran the game on ultra, on a single gpu. This test was very unreliable because the fps was anywhere between 60 to 120 but never steady 120.. Maybe if he put the graphics on medium, the test would be more reliable. But you can't tell the diffrence between 60 and 80 basically.

Back in the days you could use a tiny program called Refresh lock, to be able to run 100hz with vsync enabled. this isnt a problem for modern games thou i think. cause like old cs you got so much tearing from not using vsync. But hardware is alot better today aswell.
