I keep hearing Christians who accept Evolution saying that Genesis was never meant to be taken literally, and its only recent evangelicals that now do. Well if the earliest Christians didn't believe in the literal account of genesis, then what the fck did they believe. because until the 19th century there was no alternative. This is extremely ignorant of the history of their own religion, of course Genesis in the bible was designed to be and was believed by millions of people for thousands of years, what else was there.
@jayd4ever9 жыл бұрын
+Louis Joon yes because the Jews misunderstood it the genesis story was what the Christians learnt from the Jews
@brianmannion70976 жыл бұрын
"Well if the earliest Christians didn't believe in the literal account of genesis, then what the fck did they believe." Straightforward and a simple point but a good point nonetheless. Also my thinking is that if you add up the ages of Adam and Eve and the ages of all their descendents in the entire bible, you're left with a 6000-10000 year old Universe in which the book claims. This age fact isn't compatible with evolution. The creationists can do all the interpreting they want, but they're still left with interpreting that very simpleton like approach in which primitive peasants implemented, in a desperate attempt to discern the origins of the universe and how everything formed and functions. If you believe in evolution and the bible, then you basically believe that life and the universe is approximately 3.5 billion years old. That's as far as you can go with interpreting the bible and evolution and still make a blimp of sense although hundreds of problems arise from that belief such as, "So you interpret man made from dust as bacteria forming in water? Also explain this woman created from man's rib part". The bible tacitly says the universe is around 10000 years old. A creationist interprets the book of genesis as a giant metaphor to evolution. Evolution, helped made accurate by the contributions of the radiometric dating method, was also the exact same scientific method used to guess the age of the earth. So shouldn't creationist start believing in a 4.5 billion year old earth instead of 3.5? The earth is 4.5 billion years old, a difference of about one billion years. In the bible it says God created humans soon after (or kickstarting the evolutionary process) the earths creation. Evolution and the story of genesis are still both mutally exclusive when someone interprets the bible as describing or just mentioning evolution because the fact about 'age' is an inseparable part of the theory of evolution and the bible is precisely tacitly claiming that the earth is really not that old.

@oldnikonian3432 жыл бұрын
There are other forms of evolution besides the mythical transitional evolution where creatures turn into other creatures, i.e. cars have evolved, trains have evolved, ideas have evolved, etc etc etc Btw, Carey isn't and never has been a true Christian as his beliefs are far removed from biblical faith. The Church of England/Anglican church he oversee's is apostate and always has been since it's inception. It's a FALSE Protestant church that is heading back to Rome ecumenically, unlike TRUE Protestant churches.

6:55 *"Instead of having a really serious conversation between people of faith and people of no faith, it's now become a very bad argument indeed."* This has been attempted time and time again and, invariably, it is the people of faith who prove unwilling to modify their viewpoints. To know where the bad arguments are coming from, you don't have to look any further than the mirror. For instance: 6:22 *"Evolution is talking about moving toward a destination; it means that there is intelligence through the process"* This isn't at all accurate. Evolution has no desired outcome other than better fit within the environment. The changes aren't made with any global perspective in mind, it is purely what is best in that particular moment. If any of the changes humankind has undergone didn't provide a sufficient advantage, we wouldn't be here and evolution would be perfectly fine with that. If you are serious about having a "really serious conversation", perhaps it is time to educate yourself on the subject matter. 13:30 Ugh. Please stop the nonsense of "how" questions and "why" questions. Just because a question can be formed grammatically doesn't mean it is legitimate. "Why did the universe begin" is either indistinguishable from "how" or it's a cheap attempt to steer the question in the direction of your desired answer. If you want to broach that subject in a more honest fashion, it should done like so: _"Is there a purpose behind the creation of the universe? If so, what is it and how can we tell?"_ I've yet to find a grand "why" question that couldn't be made more objective with this kind of reformatting.
@petermarinko86098 жыл бұрын
Couldnt agree more. That "how, why" is clearly a bulshit argument and others in the debate should point that out. By that standards any explanation would be sufficient as we could then go to science and reform our first explanation and say it is an allegory.
@Oswlek8 жыл бұрын
Peter Marinko Thanks. Reading again I should have added an addendum. Even if I grant the why/how argument in its entirety, it still fails because religion provides no meaningful way of answering why questions either. It really is a silly argument to make.

While I agree, it is possible for the woman to own a horse, all the evidence in the world would lead me to disagree with the statement. - A: you cannot comprehend the miracle and depth of a woman's purse. I don't know what to say when Christians say "don't take the Bible literally". How else are you supposed to take it? If it's just metaphorical nonsense, then that leaves room for tons of extra denominations (on top of those we have to day). If it's just metaphorical nonsense (also, please prove it's not supposed to be taken literally), how could this possibly be a correct religion? How do you know what the metaphors actually mean? Why didn't God, if he wanted jackasses to believe and worship him, let the people create a book that didn't totally fail in getting its message across?
@sids50010 жыл бұрын
Precisely. How can they possibly know which bits are metaphorical and which are literal? It's clearly manipulated and unworthy of being taken seriously. Most of the stories about Jesus are copied from older religion anyway. Suspension of logic and the plea that faith is a virtue mean that religion does not get questioned in the same way that anything else would. That's because it is man-made and designed to control. Harmful, whichever way you look at it.

There were two arguments for the existence of a deity of some kind that I didnt see advanced here unfortunately. The first is the statistical one. No sensible person would deny the idea of mutation and natural selection of some kind. But, if one looks at the sheer complexity of a single cell and all the processes that go in one or if one considers something like a simple flagellum attached to a microbiotic life form, it does raise a serious question: and that is whether there has been sufficient time elapsed since the formation of life for these fantastically complicated structures to have evolved in the classic way we understand. Various authors (Stephen Meyer- Signature in the Cell) have demonstrated that it would have taken more generations than there has been time enough for in the history of the Earth. That is a compelling line of argument. The other argument is the simple one of need. If nature 'prefers' the lowest state of energy then the obvious thing to do would be to have never had a universe to begin with. Yet, it exists. There was/is no demonstrable need or reason for anything to exist and yet it does. Why?

"Were you there?", has to be the most tragic thing ever said by an creationist. It's like if their wife cheated on them behind there backs, and the creationist get's supsicious, the wife could say "Were you there?" and then have to conclude that he wasn't so his wife did not cheat on him.

“Genesis is history...” WERE YOU THERE? You start, START with belief in the buy-bull, then you present the buy-bull as proof??

Love the argument of "you weren't there to see if it actually happened" from Christians. Well, were you there to see if Jesus existed, turned water into wine, was born of a virgin, was resurrected? Hilariously deluded

"He starts with the viewpoint of not believing in God." Yeah. He started with the default. He went towards the evidence, not towards the dogmatic beliefs he was indoctrinated to believe under fear of eternal torment.

We rrrreeeeaaaallllllyyyyyy need to teach people how we know about half-life and how radiometric dating works. Because it's very silly to say scientists are assuming things when it comes to radiometric dating.
@RR-mp7hw6 жыл бұрын
Pointing out that there are assumptions does not undermine an argument. Demonstrating that assumptions are incorrect does. Demonstrating support for assumptions is a major area of science that is poorly understood by ideologues.

There are only "how" questions. "Why" questions are irrelevant.

Radiometric dating measures the fossil's Carbon weight and by that one can calculate its actual age. But there's a catch, radiometric dating can't calculate the actual age of a fossil more than 75000 years old(to compensate scientists use indirect methods to get as close to an actual date of that fossil)

The world is filled with these types of believing people......everywhere.... at work, on the train.....at the night club, at the shops, in the book store........I see god people everywhere. It’s scary. And very frustrating having a conversation with them even outside of religious insanity.

She says she doesn’t know what those are (Australopithecus, etc.) and then immediately says it’s arrogant to say she lies back and doesn’t work hard. Maybe if she actually worked hard and did the research and learned about all the evidence of evolution, including all the transitional species from apes to humans, then she wouldn’t have to say “I don’t know what those are.”
