Ryen Russillo is joined by legendary Boston sportswriter Bob Ryan to talk about Nikola Jokic’s impressive postseason, comparisons made between him Larry Bird, and why he isn’t accepted by all of his peers as the best player in the game. They then talk about the Boston Celtics, who have yet to inspire real confidence as a contender-despite easily making it to the Eastern Conference finals this year.

Podcasts have no methods for viral growth. KZbin algorithm is superior. Podcasts are so decentralized that it is VERY hard to break in. Podcasts have very loyal people, but its very hard to break in. People only listen to about 5-9 podcasts regularly. So you need to find different ways. That Bill is JUST ID'ing KZbin now is laughable. You could argue they should have been on youtube FROM THE BEGINNING.

I really don't think they bothered him much in game 6. He just missed open shots -- the whole team did. But KAT does a good job of getting into his space, especially his landing area and making him uncomfortable. I don't think it was a coincidence that we saw Jokic using the Sambor shuffle to try to create space vs dealing with KAT getting into his legs.

@michaelahurt
@michaelahurt 15 күн бұрын
@@johnnycash8567 I completely disagree. I thought Denver was getting cleaner looks in game 6 than games 3-5. They were just making shots in those games. Murray made a lot of difficult shots, as did Jokic. The only real change for Minnesota’s defense was 1) they weren’t giving up Rudy on Jokic (but Denver didn’t force the issue either) and 2) they were better about keeping Jokic off balance with their doubles. The mix was better. Minnesota’s energy level was a little higher but they are, not exactly front runners, but definitely a team that presses down on the neck. They get extra energy when they have a big lead and can start yapping. Also Minnesota shot 35% and 39% in games 3 and 4. Game 5 (31%) they were below average but it’s not like Denver shooting 22% where they had a legitimately bad shooting game. (Btw I’m not counting garbage time in those shooting stats)

@michaelahurt
@michaelahurt 15 күн бұрын
You're missing the point. We have a large enough sample to conclude that Playoff Ant is much more aggressive and weaponizes his rim pressure in a way that doesn't happen during the regular season. And when he does that it's really just him, LeBron, Wade and Jordan in terms of guys that size who have that kind of speed, first step, body control, strength and touch at the basket. You really can't overstate how big a deal it is that the only way to stop those guys from getting to the rim is to double them on the catch. It's the same as Steph's gravity or Shaq's dominance or Giannis' fastbreaks. That ability to completely and radically bend a defense to that level is the most valuable thing you can do because it means your teammates can play 4-on-3. It's really not an overreaction, he's just that physically gifted.

Like besides being a massively better athlete? Edwards is as special as it gets athletically. When he is being aggressive and getting downhill you can’t stop him. It’s like Wade and LeBron and MJ. Tatum simply doesn’t have an offensive skill at that level. He’s not Steph as a shooter. He’s not Jokic as a post player or passer. He’s not KD from mid-range. He doesn’t have SGA’s shot creation. He doesn’t have Ant’s rim pressure. He can’t manipulate like Luka. He doesn’t have Wemby’s size. He doesn’t have Giannis’ physicality. He doesn’t have LeBron’s strength. He can’t handle and finish like Kyrie. He doesn’t have Brunson’s footwork. It’s not hate it’s just acknowledging his limitations. Tatum is a very very good player but he’s very good at everything and great at nothing. He’s like a pitcher with five plus pitches but no plus plus pitches

In other cities a team can win a round, maybe two in the playoffs, and the fanbase and media will eat it up, and annoint them as a great team. Whoever is their best couple players are will be the next BIG thing! In Boston if you don't win a Championship, you are considered a failure. The only Celtic to not have that sort of scrutiny put upon them was I.T. But in boston we appreciate it when guys put their health, career, and future on the line to try to win us a championship... So he gets a pass. If Tatum played for New York, OKC, San Antonio, ect everyone would call him the Wing version of Tim Duncan. In Boston he is the bum who can't win us a championship. If Brown played ANYWHERE else he would be considered one of the best 2-way players in the league. The second coming of Paul George. In Boston he is the other WORSE bum who can't win us a championship. Until they do it, (which may never be the case), that is who they will be. Unfortunately, or fortunately, (whichever way you see it) that is the way it will always be here.

A lot of tight playoff minutes have been logged in previous seasons by the principals on this team. Jokic has real flaws too. It’s not like they’re just perceived. He’s a beast but I think the push back comes when ppl try to say he’s already greater than shaq etc. that’s a force. N like bob said other ppl have legit arguments to be mvp. So I think the “skepticism” around jokic is relative to the takes out there. Bc I’m some1 that thinks he’s overrated but by the time I talk to jokic fan most times I actually agree w them bc their individual take isn’t outlandish. But for every Kendrick Perkins there’s a Stan out there that literally thinks he’s the goat. N that’s what makes me feel the need to push back. Moderates on both sides of the aisle generally agree on most stuff they just have different allegiances they feel the need to represent

@@johnnycash8567 yee facts. n that might have something to do with the visuals like ryan was saying. but then again i get the nash comps too bc around the first two mvps bc he wasnt considered close to the best player in the world. just like nash at the time. if jok had peaked at the second mvp he would have deserved to go down in the steve nash range all time - another guy w/o a title w a v short prime n who's advanced numbers are more eye popping than the box score. n nash is a legend nothing disrespectful abt that you gotta remember too jokic had a slow start to his career. its not like he had a bunch of top 5 finishes prior like most mvps. he was a 2nd round pick that came out of nowhere. its fair for people not to be sold the first time they had heard of him. sometimes we know who "the guy" is early like lebron or wemby n sometimes they creep up on you w accomplishments like jokic, wade, nash, jordan dirk etc. he also wasnt winning (reg or post szn) n hadnt rly flashed the capability to score consistently at the 30+ppg volume like other top guys in the league. at the time his case was validated by advanced analytics and a TRAINED eye test. easy to miss for most. he became the guy is now, best player in the world level, when he won a ring averaged close to 30ppg and then won another mvp. atp i think its reasonable to have him anywhere from giannis-kg all time. is that around where you would have him all-time?

Denver just lost a playoff game where they could have sent their opponent packing by 45 points. Minnesota lost 3 playoff games in a row after winning 2 straight. Why is no one questioning whether either of these teams can be trusted? Dallas is wildly overachieving and no one really believes in OKC. I get it that the media is looking for narratives, but this one is a weak one.

@michaelahurt
@michaelahurt 15 күн бұрын
It’s not disingenuous, Bob just understands basketball. What matters is the end result. If your team is 20 points better with you on the floor it doesn’t matter how you got there. If you’re worth 30 points on offense and -10 on defensive or 10 on offense and 10 on defense it’s still 20 points. Why is winning 100-90 better than 130-110? Also an individual player can impact offense much more than defense. It’s not a one-to-one. Look at game 2. Minnesota played their best defensive game all year without their best defensive player. And Denver has a top 10 defense anyway

@@superSIZEmee or you don’t understand how math works If player A can generate a 125 point offense and you can construct a 115 point defense then that is better than player B who is 118 and 111 The reality is that defense is worth 3-4 times less than offense. A great offensive player like Jokic or LeBron or Magic can make Aaron Gordon or Anderson Varejao or Kurt Rambis an efficient offensive player. But a great defender like Gobert or Wemby can’t make bad defenders better. If you genuinely believe that individual defense is as valuable as individual offense then I’m not implying it, I’m saying you flat out don’t understand basketball. And looking at the scoreboard is not an advanced stat. It’s as basic as it gets.

He doesn't look like a basketball player, "visually"? He's white -- the tiptoeing around this is painful. The discourse with Kendrick Perkins last year showcased that a significant portion of "anti-Jokic" is racial resentment. Not like you can have a career and say that, though.

It’s more than that because Steph got a lot of the same treatment but certainly it’s a big part. Whether it’s Bird, Jokic, or Caitlin Clark you always hear the “they aren’t actually good they’re just white so the white media is propping them up” Although a lot of its play style too because you don’t really hear that with Luka, a guy who has a more traditional game.
