Surprisingly enough, KAT was actually drafted FOR his defense. He only averaged 10PPG at Kentucky, but he was an ELITE defender. Once he got drafted, he actually remained an EXCELLENT defender for the first two years of his career. Then after that, he pretty much just stopped playing defense and focused solely on developing his offense. So that shows that he is capable of it. It’s just an effort issue with him.

I heard this from a Chinese basketball content creator so its not original but I think it hits the spot on Rudy. He's like a defensive anchor that provide you with a "defensive floor", meaning a bad team with him will have a decent defence. But his defensive "ceiling", especially in the playoffs which is what the championship teams care about, really isn't that high and at least in the series vs Mavs, have been a defensive liability on the court if the match-ups don't favour him. This doesn't even get to the offensive limitations that he imposes onto his teammates. I truly believe the Wolves would have fared better had they started with either Naz or Anderson and dropped Rudy, as that would have provided way more space on the court of their offence to operate.

Yes the Wolves lost in five games after beating the defending champion Nuggets but they still made the conference finals which is not something the 90s Hawks were able to do. The Hawks didn’t make a conference finals until 2015. I’m not sure where you are going with this line of thinking. FWIW I think ANT is more D Wade than MJ but that’s a different discussion

Ppl glazing KAT and the dude barely averaged 19 ppg during the entire playoff run 💀 Also shot 47% from the field and 37% on 3pts (5 attempts per game). That is NOT “irreplaceable” production and definitely not worth the $220M investment the Wolves have made in him.

Gobert hate is insane but I think he’s the best asset to use for getting another killer on the squad. The guy is a plus defensively, but a non factor on offense. It’s not the era for that.

Yeah I’m with you wholeheartedly, Gobert was not really the issue. Though I wish he had a consistent offensive game, that’s really where he lacks. Ant & KAT didn’t show up at the same time until the series was practically over, Gobert obviously deserves some of the blame as I said offensively he just doesn’t bring enough but his defensive impact did show up. Luka & Kyrie showed up together consistently & made their role players better. Games 1 & 2 McDaniels & Reid were the consistent guys on the TWolves. Other than the last game which was a blowout of epic proportions, the games were close. Mavs were the more in sync team & perhaps that’s the experience factor of Kyrie & Luka

The voters said that Gobert is the defender most coaches has to prepare for the most, which also means that every team in the NBA has a few plays specifically made for him (probably don't use all of it during the regular season but just test a few of them). I agree that Gobert isn't great on offense (he was still efficient in the playoffs). Saying that he can't defend on the perimeter isn't true, he can, but he just isn't one of the best at it, just like CP3 said it, he did what every other good or great defender would do, it's just that Luka and Jokic are great offensive players. As for the Shaqs and Perks out there, we don't wanna hear your frustration with Gobert, we know he got paid more than what you got in your entire career; and especially Perk, your only role on the court was to be an enforcer and you were average at it.

You do not trade the DPOY. You do not trade the OPOY. We’ve come to a turning point in sports where the defensive player of the year doesn’t get credit for setting the tone on a great defensive minded team. It’s also funny when guys get credit for playing defense. It’s literally their job. It’s no mistake that when Kyrie Irving and Luka doncic actually play some D, they make it to the nba finals. Rudy Gobert wasn’t the reason the wolves lost. The problem was the mavs had the best 2 players in the series contributing to both ends of the floor. Rudy can’t guard 1-5 yet they repeatedly allowed him to be switched onto smaller faster players.

The Wolves must realize how difficult it is to get to the conference finals, never mind winning the championship. Getting back each year is not that easy. Many in the NBA don't even make it to the playoffs. Imagine how Gafford and Washington must feel to play in these games. To work so hard, one can't take these opportunities for granted. @dr2759 Of course I did. If you examine Rudy's history on the France national team, he can be an addition to an already potent offensive team, not to mention his defensive prowess. These plays were intentionally drawn for Rudy, which they perhaps practice over and over again. Therefore, his confidence in handling that offensive scheme is much more evident.

Just to add, I think the Wolves hesitantly applied a decent defense in guarding Luka, just gave him too much space. But then again, you should blame the refs who always made bad calls on the defenders on Luka, which made the Wolves defense somewhat loose. The Wolves' coach didn't even try to challenge the foul called on Edwards in the dying seconds of game 4, which is very clearly not a foul.
