Some of the magic in this film just straight up cannot be explained as theater/stage magic, especially some of the hypnosis stuff, which means that the Horsemen have got to be actual wizards. Leo Vader made a very entertaining video about that a couple of years ago.

Came here to the comments to mention Leo's video. You beat me to it.

Honestly, the prolific use of CGI in this movie really depreciates the spectacle. It's kind of cheating to make a film about stage magic tricks, then fill it with visuals that can ONLY be accomplished with computers/actual magic. (But then, practical effects people are unionized, and CGI people thus far aren't. So we know exactly which the studio suits would rather employ.)
@XvKJP2015Ай бұрын
Hypnosis isn't hard to believe in this movie. The machine that transferred the bank owner, the bubble part, making it rain upwards and sideways, and them disappearing into money is wizardly. Hypnosis in this movie is the easiest to believe honestly
@sophiastargazerАй бұрын
@@XvKJP2015 it isn't believable if you know anything about how real hypnosis works. Hypnosis makes people more suggestible, but it can't make somebody do things they wouldn't normally do, things that would go against their morals. It also can't make people fall asleep just by waving one's hands in their face. Hypnosis in movies is just fundamentally and perpetually misrepresented, just like a lot of other things like fist fighting or guns or opening doors with credit cards, and countless other stuff.
@TristanLane52019 күн бұрын
@@sophiastargazerhypnosis doesn't work at all. It is just a name for asking people to do something. The implicit social contract is what makes people go along with it, it's the fact you've got them up on a stage and waggled a watch around in front of their eyes and then said they'll cluck like a chicken. As soon as they start to feel like nothing has changed they're faced with a choice, either be the person that everyone at the show will hate for refusing to go along with it (and a good magician will then fill with made up nonsense about some people not being easily susceptible) or...you just go along with it. That's why in hypnosis you can "ask" someone to cluck like a chicken, because it is only mildly embarrassing, however you can't hypnotise someone to expose their genitals or murder someone...unless they're already down to do that 😂 Technically everyone becomes a "stooge" someone who is scripted to go along with it for the trick, the same as in a scam such as three card monte where a stooge will win heavily to "prove the game isn't rigged" and the only difference is in a regular hypnotism show the person who is selected (based off whatever criteria the magician believes makes that person more likely to comply, no such thing as random draws really at magic shows) becomes a stooge at the last possible second, whereas in a TV magic show like Derren Brown the person selected to be "hypnotised to fight zombies" or whatever is just a regular paid actor who is aware of everything they'll be asked to do for the most part.

I suppose it should be said that if thadius was the fifth horseman it would actually make mor sense that he would only have 100 million in his car, if the police are assuming he’s getting a fifth of the loot. But then of course you still have the more obvious flaw of why Thadius’ car being packed with an amount of money that entirely prevents someone from even being able to drive it incriminates him as the fifth horseman. And if the movie shows anything, it's that the average person doesn't have a good sense of what half a billion dollars in bank notes looks like. Pretty sure they could've skimped a bit there. Best wizard heist is and remains The Amazing Maleeni from The X-Files, followed by The Scented Room from Johnathan Creek, and yes I rank them.

There do actually exist free-floating holograms. They basically work by levatating a small ball with sound or a laser. That ball is then rapidly moved around in a pattern, and separate lights shine on the ball ensuring it has the right color at the right place. It's still experimental, but the BYU hologram projector is pretty impressive as a demo. Still a ways from what's in the movie, though.

Actually, the effect at ~24:00 can be achieved through projection mapping, often used in theme parks such as on the Disney castle! The projector you use at 24:30 is only 7500 lumen, while professional projection shows usually run laser projectors >40k lumen. Let's say you use the TITAN Laser 47000 WUXGA (~$50k a piece), and bc you need to set this show up quickly you're not calculating the perfect amount of projectors so I'll just use your estimate of 16 projectors, + another $50k in cables & electrical equipment bc these units slurp a lot of energy, the total would be closer to $850.000!

6:46 There would have to be a piece of glass in the center, folded in such a way that it gave each person the specific details about whatever was on it. I also immediately tried to rationalize the projectors by thinking he must have doctored them up with other parts. Which means he would need exstensive knowledge of electronics optical devices. You can see why this befuddled me so.
