Can the Germans Sink $13 Billion US Supercarrier? In today's cinematics, time travel brings the US carrier group back to the 40s. We are going to try to simulate this in DCS first time ever. For this insane fiction, nearly 200 Messerschmitt Bf 109s are going to perform an epic all-out air raid against a modern US Aircraft carrier. Obviously, we love fun and unfair scenarios, but will the US be able to defend itself against such a massive wave of planes with F/A-18s, Phalanx CIWS, or is it completely mission impossible?

Simple maths : A Nimitz calss carrier carries a maximum amount of 54 F/A-18s (including 18E, 18C and Growlers) assuming each hornet carries 6 AMRAAMs (Not sure about the Growlers but the 18C and 18E can do), that would be 324 missiles, enough to wipe out every single bf 109 and then some.

Interestingly, the channel "Battleship New Jersey" covers a very similar topic - that is, would USS New Jersey of survived Pearl Harbor in her various states, IE WW2 Vintage, Vietnam War vintage, and her last loadout. The Curator, Ryan Szimaski's take was that in her more modern configuration she'd start strong but she'd not have the raw weapons loadout she did in WW2 thatd be needed to handle such heavy numbers. Much is the same here -- If the Luftwaffe came at a USN battle group in the kind of numbers they had in the Battle of Brittan, the American fleet would quickly run out of ready service ammo before the Luftwaffe ran out of aircraft. This in turn would allow the Luftwaffe to render the Carrier and a good part of the fleet mission incapable - they may not sink the Carrier outright, but she'd be in no condition to fight again. The smaller escorts would likely be utterly wrecked if not sunk outright.

Irl, the F/A-18C/D Hornets aren't supposed to be that close in the carrier strike group when CIWS are activated because the CIWS didn't have IFF system. It would shoot everything that approaches or heads in the ship, friendly or not.

Well, that's great, but let's be realistic, those Germans have no chance of even getting near that fleet. Missiles and jets versus mere slow propeller planes. In reality they're very f'ed up. The US technology is just too advance. Again, in reality, nothing can heavily damage that fleet, not even a scratch.

Not sure what the point of such a scenario was unless there was a time warp. Fare enough each to their own but with the amount of 109s shown in the first part of the clip a few more may have had a chance to inflict a little more damage. The numbers shown shot down didn't equal the number of planes I made mention of. If you want to get adventurous and inventive why not create shipping land and aircraft in a fantasy steampunk scenario. Your imagination could then run wild design-wise.

A more likely scenario would have the Luftwaffe sending X Fliegerkorps to attack the Carrier Strike Group. They were the most experienced German anti shipping unit. The problem with using them is that they never had a large number of aircraft, so the escorts would have more than enough Standard missiles to shoot down the whole lot before they got close to visual range.

I just realized this, given the desperate situation; why weren't the Surface Combat Ships opening up with their Deck Guns!? Proximity Fused 127mm shells with Modern Radar gunlaying would be Lethal vs flying crates like Bf 109s and those guns fire very fast for a 5 incher. So, tell me again where you are launching these BF 109's from that they can even reach a carrier at sea? Or are you suggesting that a carrier with stand-off striking ability would be stupid enough to sail into the English Channel before ensuring air superiority. The F/A-18's combat radius is at least 200 NM greater that a Bf-109 and it can operate and target around the clock. They can also intercept at night - which the Bf-109 cannot do. The shipborne and airborne radar systems could detect and track every bf-109 from the moment it took off... only a fool would allow a 109 to get within 100 miles of any vessel when there is no need to- and there is no actual need to bother with aerial combat, because you have the ability to fly around any airborne group - blast their undefended airfields while they are flying, and then follow them back and destroy the planes on the ground after they land. But you don't even have to bother with that - you have the ability to sit off the coast of Iceland, and drop Tomahawks on any target in Germany before having to defend against any aircraft besides a Condor - as if that would be a threat - even if all 276 ever made attacked at the same time. I hate to be a wet blanket, but really?
