Jocko Willink puts it pretty well... Gi will absolutely help your defense since it’s not as easy to slip out. No Gi will ridiculously help your offense since you have less to get a hold of

For me I do nogi/MMA 5 days a week and gi once a week. Coming from an MMA background, the gi is so much fun, its a hobby to me where I dont have to worry about medals or belts, I just come into learn. Since starting gi, my nogi passing as gotten A LOT better too while my subs and movement from nogi still apply well in gi. Just train homies

I started training Muay Thai and BJJ a few months ago. Muay Thai is the main focus with 3 to 5 sessions per week. I have been adding in 2 or 3 BJJ classes (gi and no gi) but there is an obvious limit to my time and I don't want to over train to the point of injury. So.....I'm likely going to add 1 or 2 no gi classes to my Muay Thai. If I back off on the Muay Thai a bit later on, then I'll add some gi classes. Definitely need a sense of balance regardless of what you're doing. Also, if you enjoy gi, do more gi. If you enjoy no gi, do more no gi. 😀

you misunderstand his point, with the gi there is much more grips and just much more friction with movements. In my experience i have to work harder with the gi to get a position as people can just get annoying grips to prevent certain positions. With no gi u can slip into positions much more easily.

Gi and no Gi are very different. I did no Gi before I started Gi. The Gi is more difficult than No Gi because the Gi provides handles that people use to control you. But that works both ways. I wrote this comment and after I submitted it Chewy said the exact same thing lol.

I definitely can appreciate your opinion on this because I started in the Gracie no gi program and everybody just laughed when I asked what the difference between gi and no gi was. They told me if I want to roll around in pajamas to go do it on somebody else's time. 4 years later my bjj gym closed and most of the ones around me were gi gyms one of my old training partners had me come out and try class. I hated the first one because everyone smashed me using my gi against me. But I was so intrigued by itthen I went and ordered a gi when I got home that night and paid up front for 6 months so I knew I wouldn't quit until I gave it a fair shake. I don't do no gi anymore except for every once in awhile we'll take our gi top and roll for fun.

About the leg locks, I think John Danaher (on JRE podcast) was saying that leg locks were discouraged because they were only used when you were left with no other option during a roll. In other words, a leg lock was sort of like a "bitch move". If all systems failed and you couldn't tap the person out then the leg lock was like an emergency escape but not your everyday go to move. That's why people just stayed away from leg locks back then.

Hi chew I've been training for almost 8 months and really find your videos helpful I'm and use your advice every class. But this weekend I was. In my 3rd Competition I won my first match but in the second match I had a guy in my guard and we were hand fighting and my shoulder popped out of its socket pretty badly... I'm 6'3 and 80kg kinda built like chad and my opponent was a lot more of your size with bigger arms than me... I want to keep training when I heal my shoulder in a few weeks although I'm worried it could happen again with a similar style opponent ... do you have any advice for someone with weak shoulders .....? and do you have tips for hand fighting against a stronger opponent? (If you want to see the video I can send you it lol it's not pretty)

I REALLY think everyone should train both. The ratio is up to you. Mine is 2:1 two days with gi one day no gi, and I actually think that's a little too much no gi training. A friend of mine trains 3:1 they do last week of the month no gi But really, it's visible how people improve faster when they do both.

I'm a white belt so my experience is trash but I majored in math. I like to see jujitsu as planes, balance in weight shifts and game theory. We try to exploit each others joints mechanical weakness in range and power in order to non verbally say, I win. A win in this brief contest of non verbal communication isn't subjective. we know at the end of the roll who is the better practitioner of their own game theory of BJJ :) I'm ranting... I love the videos your and I'm sure my perspective will change. I've only been doing BJJ for a little under a month.

I'm in a similar boat as you, about 4 months in to BJJ. I only used the gi for the last month and I've found it to be really good . The gi gives you options for gi chokes which are easier for me than non-gi chokes. It's still hard for me to get into an armbar or triangle, but I find I can get sleeve or lapel chokes a lot easier. Basically it's more fun and you'll be more likely to enjoy and stick with it if you've got some extra tools

Hi! Im pretty new here, gonna try out bjj for the first time this thursday and im super exited since it looks like so much fun! I do, however, wonder about the difference between "gi" and "no gi"? Like are there any big differences or just the clothes you wear?
@27walker27
@27walker27 6 жыл бұрын
its just what you wear....but that IS the big difference, its all about the grips, in no gi you cant grab the clothes because they effectively aren't there. with the gi you can grab the collar/lapel/sleeves/pant legs which helps you manipulate your opponent. for example grabbing the sleeve is a lot stronger than just having hold of your opponents wrist. also in the gi you have a lot of chokes using your opponents collar etc. the gi also allows the use of different positions because of the grips which aren't really possible or effective in no gi. this also makes no gi kind of faster paced and a little bit more wrestling. the grips in gi tend to slow things down a little bit

2+2 is doing sums and not a really good example for math. in my experience (math student) and talking to a buddy of mine who is currently doing his PhD in math, BJJ is a lot like math. it is about problem solving, about repetitions, about attention to small details, about being stuck in a problem and the problem says "nope, not gonna happen". I totaly get your idea but I think calling BJJ an art is a worse comparison than calling it math :D

No you’re wrong. The amount of colours are very limited when painting a certain given image. You have to know precisely which color to blend to get the perfect shadow shade for instance. Bob Ross is not just calling out odd color names like phthalate blue to make you buy more specialized tubes of paint. Unless you’re inventing a new style of martial arts/acrylic style, you’re better off following convention.

Unless your attacker in real life is attacking you in Spandex a la the 1980's, I think Gi training gives you a better sense of what it is to fend off someone wearing clothing.

WAIT????!!!!! wait just a minute...are you saying there's no objective truth in this???? the gi is a weapon, if you rely on it for grips odds are (unless you're a suuuper talent) you gonna have problems knowing hot to tie up and grip without that weapon, that's the objective truth here

As a cop Gi grips translate really well grappling with people on the street, gripping a shirt or especially a hoody and gripping their jeans works just like a Gi. I think you should train both though

I prefer no gi but it is just as strange as pajama fighting. No gi guys like to find the slipperiest tightest clothes they can find. Especially the smaller guys. The gi is a lot of fun but I was shocked at how hot I got in it the first time I rolled. I too found that there are things I got away with in no gi that does not translate in the pajamas. I think the gi is probably really good for people to start in because it is slower and allows you to think things through. No gi is usually very fast paced and newer people with no grappling experience tend to either freeze up or spaz out because everything happens so quickly.

Slower? No way, different, but not slower. Maybe it's who you're rolling with.

100% disagree. For one, don’t insult it with “pajamas”. I started no gi, with no wrestling experience and did great. I transitioned to gi because it difficult and takes more technique.

Gi training is traditional and can be considered obsolete. Why? Because think how the japanese used to dress back then. Since we wear tighter clothes nowadays, no gi is adviseable. Imho do both.

LOL I train both but even a world championship gi match is usually snails pace with little action. There really isn't an argument that gi is a slower sport. Kind of the whole point of the gi is to slow things down and make you concentrate on technique.

you know a ton more about grappling than i do chewie and you probably have a ton more talent, but what you say here is just bullshit, can you imagine going to elite wrestling guys and tell them they should grapple in a bathrobe to get better???? it's silly

Dont train gi if you're a mma fighter, it makes no sense to spend energy learning all these gi techniques, you have enough things to learn in mma already, gi is waste of time
