A bit of fun with the Quansheng UVK58, testing out its microwave RX capabilities with some sensitivity tests thrown in for good measure too!
For more information on the great work done by Cambridgeshire repeater group, check out their website.

The one thing you don’t mention Andy is the cost of this little radio. I paid £15 for mine delivered and I have heard of others getting this same radio for a tenner! So everything in perspective, whatever this radio does within 2m and 70cm is outrageous value - so the rest is a big bonus!

it may not just be a sensitivity problem... wideband rigs can also get "desensed" in the presence of strong signals when something swamps the whole front-end & the whole thing goes deaf.... you go up to many a transmission site & many rigs chuck in the towel in their vicinity.

Very probably. I guess there is no bandpass filters in the frontend, as in more expensive rigs. The input stage can be saturated by undesired frequencies.

Nice review. The really impressive thing about the Quansheng, is that you can pick one up for £20 or even less. You won't get the Kenwood or the ICOM for that. So if you just want to experiment, the quansheng is a no-brainer, then upgrade to a more expensive better performing radio if you're enjoying it.

Hi Andy. I don't understand why almost everyone are excited, when trying to make HF radio (rather only receiver) from VHF/UHF handy. Without filters it's only a toy. For me, real goal will be if someone is gonna modify 70cm band filters section for 23cm band. I don't know is it possibile, because there are 2 microstripes on pcb in 70cm band filters. It's harder to eventually avoid them, then just replace inductors with other ones. What i know, there is a modification for 2m band, which allow you to change it to 4m band. That's realy something for me, because 4m handy's cost minimum 6 times more then Quansheng. In future I'm going to make 4m band mod. I'm very happy that are few firmware releases, that expand a lot functions of this radio. 4m band modification is possible now. If someone's gonna make possible to modify 70cm band to 23cm band, it's gonna be awesome. There are no any new 23cm band handy's, and the older, used ones are rare and prices are high. But that's only my opinion. I'm curious on what things about this radio, You are working on with other friends. 😉 73!

Those radios made from chinesium have terrible front ends. They are easily deafened by strong out of band signals. So, test sensitivity again, but generate another signal out of band that is strong and try again. You will find it to be terrible. Modulated morse on 1.2 GHz.??!! What is that for? Is that just the repeater IDing itself? Or is that a transmission of some kind?

Well the UV-K5 comes with TX enabled for the US ham bands and rx on 50 mhz, FM AM airband, VHF, UHF and even 470-600Mhz(RX only). But with firmware modifications you can receive from 18mhz to 1300mhz. With more modifications you can even transmit but the harmonics are not good and you transmit very low power. Also highly illegal.
