Get to know how a healthy marine ecosystem functions, and what creates the lethal conditions that lead to dead zones.
--
For most of the year, the Gulf of Mexico is teeming with marine life, from tiny crustaceans to massive whales. But every summer, disaster strikes. Around May, animals begin to flee the area. And soon, creatures that can’t swim or can’t swim fast enough begin to suffocate and die off in massive numbers. What's going on? Kate Slabosky dives into the lethal conditions that create dead zones.
Lesson by Kate Slabosky, directed by Mette Ilene Holmriis.

but they missed the biggest point that is that most of the agricultural contamination is by the gigantic volume of crops that goes to livestock, so when you think about it the biggest step one can make as an individual is eat plants directly and not animals, message that you'll rarely see promoted unforutnately :(

5:42 In Japan a man did this in the 70's to 90's to promote a healthy relation with the industries upriver and downriver which impacted fishermen and those with oyster farms. At first he struggled due to the science of his research were still new and untested. After many years his study and research helped his oyster farm, and the business up river. It made the ecosystem in land healthy to those to the sea as well, and everywhere in between. Decaying leaves and run off from the river gave ample amounts of nutriets not only supplying food for plankton but the oysters. It affected the quality and the flavor of the oysters.

They haven't given the name of the process that is caused by drainage of chemical waste into the water bodies. It is not called eutrophication, it is called accelerated eutrophication. There is difference, eutrophication is not only caused by excessive rain, it is also caused by excessive deposition of the minerals into rivers from the mountains. It is a completely natural process that occurs over a thousands of years but the activities such as draining chemicals into and disrupting the marine ecosystem and accelerated this process.

My dad is a small-time farmer and he says essentially the same. Even for big farm, the profit margin is low, so they're not going to overfertilize and waste money! Individual home owners, though, who want to fertilize a small lawn, may buy a bag of fertilizer and dump the whole thing on the lawn, even if it's too much for the space, just because they don't want to store it!

Umm... Without technology, most people on earth will die. We are too many to live a "natural" stone age lifestyle. What we need is more technology and research instead of less. More technology will make agriculture more efficient, requiring less water, less space, and less fertiliser. Our and the world's future depends on the development of more and better technology, but unfortunately, many influential people and groups think like you, causing the earth even more harm.
@Inside.Frame1

You guys didn’t get what I'm saying here. I'm not saying that we don’t need technology. We need it, it's essential. What I'm saying is, we need to focus more on creating better environment instead of competing over adding new features to phones. We need to find a way to not to harm the nature.
