My dad had a 2018 Ford pickup. The truck lacked a touchscreen and had a basic setup. Yet the truck could still be locked from being turned on if he missed a monthly payment. I saw that first hand, but read an article today that Ford submitted a patent to be able to lock doors, turn off vehicles, make unpleasant noises in the cabin if inside, and a bunch of other things that will help with repossession of a vehicle.

So no, they can't stop the car once started. Why the police should have access to a security system is a mystery. If the owner reports the car stolen the security company should disable it for the customer, not law enforcement.

That's what happens. The victim calls police and the police contact the security company and give the owners' information + official police report information so the security company knows the request is legit and then they lock the vehicle's ignition and help the police locate it.

@paulgabel202929 күн бұрын
For the record....OnStar would never do that without an extensive process. It would have to be established in a court of law that the company is REQUIRED to cooperate by law, and it would still take a court issued warrant before they would even consider interfering with a customers vehicle. What OnStar CAN do and what they WILL do are two different things. They are currently under no obligation to tamper with your car just because the police want them to.
@JoeyGray-u5k29 күн бұрын
On some older cars where they don’t have an electric ignition they use these things in the disrubuter called points and what happens is when you turn it over the distributor spins and the points create spark which fires and turns over the engine this is way older cars are better than newer ones and the cops can only shut off the power source to the ignition which is the battery so the car will still run unless the driver kills the engine
@j2ko572 ай бұрын
Just for clarification that is true. Onstar can not only disable ignition but they can also straight up turn the car off. Thing is I’ve only heard about that happening if the car is stolen and the owner makes the call. Question is can the cops use it? Probably not. Even if there was some type of subpoena that would grant a police department that access, they would most likely have to get it signed by a judge. During the middle of a chase that’s just not feasible

The road piracy and bureaucracy is the crime. The invasion of privacy is the crime. You're suffering from severe Stockholm Syndrome. Every vehicle should have a mandatory chip that authorities can use to disable it. That's not to say the police can just go around stopping cars, I'm referring to instances such as vehicle theft or suspected active drunk drivers or emergencies such as a driver passed out or having a seizure or an emergency situation that it would prevent injuries or death's.
@mrkoolio44752 ай бұрын
Well that sounds great in theory. But the question is how does OnStar connect with the vehicle… That’s right via satellite or the Internet and that connection is contained in your rearview mirror so guess what’s the first thing they do when they steal your car that’s right they disconnect your rearview mirror….. The best way to prevent car theft is to pull your starter fuse out… It’s a pain in the neck but it’s affective

If you have any smart connectivity to your car (such as remote start), it is possible to shut the car off remotely. Infiniti can be accessed remotely from another country, let alone from your local law enforcement, for example. Hackers worked out how to remotely control Jeep Cherokee computers remotely several years ago by hacking the smart infotainment remotely and then accessing the Engine and braking computers from there...
