Great video! Really nice job - you covered all the important issues. A Fieldmaster or Huntsman might have been a better comparison since it has a saw and the Roxon doesn't have pliers. When you do, that point goes to Victorinox. Even though the Vic saw does not lock, it is 30% longer meaning 30% shorter cut times or 30% larger limb capacity. I agree with you, the Roxon takes the point easily on main blade, scissors, screwdriver and awl. Not only are the Phillips and awl in line, but mine came with a bit kit included in the $38 price. The bottle opener and can opener are a toss up for me. Victorinox might be a tad better as separate tools but it doesn't lock. The tweezers are a toss up. Victorinox wins by default on toothpick, small blade and hook. Roxon has the clip and slightly lower price. Victorinox 0.8 oz lighter and has the edge on proven durability and warranty. It's really close. You can't go wrong either way. Which is saying a lot. I go with Roxon because the saw is my least used tool, and I love the D2 one hand blade, scissors, in line awl, in line Phillips and locking tools. In a 100 years, Victorinox has never made a 91mm or 93mm knife with an in line awl AND an in line 3D Phillips. To me, the Roxon innovations are worth more than the Victorinox proven durability, warranty and weight difference.

Hey Parker. Beautifully written. I agree with all your points. I didn't mention the bit kit because I'm not carrying in my pocket but maybe I should've. As for the price funnily enough starting today I found the Super Tinker on sale on Amazon at 32 which complicates things a bit but I gave the value point to Victorinox anyway. Your conclusion is right on and overall I think it's a very pleasant addition to the world of EDC and I see them innovating in the plier tools as well which is desperately needed in the ecosystem. I'm happy they're around.

For similar dimensions and weight, compare the KS2E against the Victorinox Ranger. They can be found for similar prices too. The Ranger blows the KS2E out of the water though. Nearly double the amount of functions and much better quality. I got the KS2 and ended up giving it away. I love Roxon’s innovation but they’re light years away from Victorinox. A lot of the other tools could easily give Leatherman a run for their money, especially the Flex. They’re much more similar in style and target market (steel grades, locking blades) to Leatherman than Victorinox.

@@AboutThings_byTarif Agreed. The best multitool scissors I have found. FWIW I tested a bunch of small scissors for a pocket EDC "Leatherman/Victorinox killer" kit I put together. I wanted scissors better than the Roxon KS2E and smaller but close to as good as my Klein 2100 electrician snips. I must have tested a dozen. The best scissors, hands down, were the Kai 7100 4" coming in at 25g, or less than 1/3 the weight of the Kleins. Better than Roxon in my testing.

@@AboutThings_byTarif OK - here are the gory details if you want them. The pouch is a Viperade VE18-S small. It's passport sized at 5x3.5 and easily fits in a back pocket. On the velcro side, I have Cobra XS pliers in the outer pocket with LeverGear Edge XT pry bar/exacto blade and Uncle Bill Silver Gripper tweezers in the inner pocket. On the other side, I have the Kai scissors in the large back pocket. The top pockets and straps hold a 3 Swords Germany sapphire file, 711L Lollipop screwdriver (easily the best pocket screwdriver available) and my Steinwhale bit kit. In the large center zipper pocket, I keep a couple of bit extenders, a 711L hex end ratchet and a "cheat" item. It's a Swiss Army 7 Alox which gives me a saw, in line awl and hook blade. All told it's about 13 oz and doesn't seem to drag me down in the back pocket. YMMV. If I need to save weight, I ditch the Swiss Army 7 which brings it to 10 oz. When using this kit, I clip a one handed folder (Pyrite Lite or Civivi Sendy) in my front pocket. The Sendy has a toothpick and tweezers built in. If I want even smaller carry, I'd ditch the kit altogether and go with the Roxon or a one of two custom Victorinox (Cyber Companion or Compact Lite).

WO! Thanks a lot for the details. That sounds like an awesome setup. I love the VE18, was considering it when I got the Alpaka Zip Pouch Pro. I have the Cobra 5 inch in my EDC pouch I keep in my backpack. Amazing tools. I love the 711L tools. Very well made and well designed. I have a Steinwhale kit as well, carried in that same pouch along with their tiny stubby driver. The 7 is great if you need a saw. I used to use one a lot more when I lived in the countryside for a couple of years, but in my more urban existence now I haven't used one for the past year and a half. I have one in my backpack of course but not on my pocket EDC. I'll check out all the things I don't know here (the Kai scissors seem great when I looked). There seems to have been a great deal of thought put into your kit and I appreciate that you took the time to share it.

The main steel used by both Roxon and Victorinox is virtually the same- Din 1.4114 (X50CrMov15). But the D2 steel in the Roxon KS2E's main blade will last a lot longer before needing sharpening (see 'Cedric and Ada Gear and Outdoors'). All tools lock on the Roxon is a big win in my opinion. The SAK (Victorinox) scissors has a pointy, thin tip which is the only scissors that can cut off a messed-up fingernail that has an edge split. So I suggest carrying a Victorinox Classic as well as any other knife, including the Roxon KS2E or their 804 Flex model, which is amazing (hint hint)!
@AboutThings_byTarif3 ай бұрын
Thanks a lot for the info! The locking is definitely a huge plus. I miss the finesse of Victorinox scissors honestly. Love your review and clear explanation on the comparison. May be a Fieldmaster a better candidate to compare with KS2 apple to apple. To me, Roxon is really a new player in the market that EDC guys should need to know and try. The quality of all Roxon products is always in good, although still not excellent, standard with many new idea such as the modular design and quick swap of the tools. I got my KS2 (not elite version) for more than 1 year and all tools are performed as expected. my overall mark is 8 over 10 but I should need to complain on the bit kit it comes with. The bit adaptor is loosely connected to the tool and it easily detached when using. The quality of the bits is also below standard. So, i can say, the bundled bit kit not only can't help to sales but also pull down the impression of Roxon as a quality multitools. All in all, KS2 is a very good tool but it will not replace my Victorinox and actually I used my super tinker for more than 20 years and the condition is still excellent. As EDCer, I will suggest to collect both and hope the new design from competitors can push Swiss Army to have more new products. Thank again for review and looking forwarding for your future videos.

I think you didn't compare some things well, i.e. put them in the correct category. To begin with, a knife that has a lock, in most of the West (EU and USA) belongs to the category of weapons (regardless of the length of the blade), and you may have problems carrying it if the police find you. A blade about 8 cm long without a locking mechanism can be classified as a multitool. By that criterion it is not comparable because it was deliberately made without a locking mechanism. Another thing about scissors, it all depends on what you use them for. I often use it for nails and cuticles, small cuts, and these big ones are of no use to me. Maybe if they are in a camping set, but for my urban EDC, victorinox is the ultimate no1 :)
@AboutThings_byTarif4 ай бұрын
For most people these two are multitools and their use cases are comparable. Of course if you're in a place that doesn't allow locking blades then I should lose you at about the one minute mark here and the whole thing is moot 🙂. But for those who can, it's a valid choice. And was a very real one for me personally, hence the video. The scissors are indeed not suitable for grooming or precision tasks so you're right, I actually also carry a small victorinox Nail Clip 580 for grooming. That doesn't mean they're not for urban use though! In my rather urban experience they've outperformed all other scissors at everything except cutting hang nails. Which to me was enough to carry them.
@yasulongАй бұрын
The Victorinox will last longer because you use them much less frequently LOL. Another point for KS2E is its G10 scale. Have you seen 3rd party G10 scales price for Victorinox?. Roxon win it for me mainly down to the ease of use. I wouldn't dream of one-hand open Victorinox's main blade, while KS2E 's only need a swipe.
@AboutThings_byTarifАй бұрын
The ease of use is a huge point in favor of the Roxon. I don't see it lasting for as long as the Victorinox but it's by no means flimsy in any way. There are definitely G10 scales out there but for some odd reason I really dislike modded Swiss Army knives 🙂

I have the Victorinox compact and the deluxe tinker mostly for the pliers ( and many others) and just got this Roxon Elite. I really like it. I’m trying to decide what will be my EDC at this point. As far as the scissors, if you don’t need precision then the Roxon is just as sharp and has more power. However, when it comes to small precision cuts at the tip of the tool, Vic wins. So I say the scissors are a draw. It depends on the application.
@AboutThings_byTarif3 ай бұрын
I think the best test is to carry it for a few months and see if you find yourself needing the other scissors more. Victorinox definitely makes the more diverse scissors. Carrying both I'd agree with you that it's pretty much a draw. What I miss when I'm not carrying the Roxon is the easy one handed deployment of the blade. Lockable is a plus but not a must for most of my uses. I'm currently giving the Cybertool a try and I'm missing the blade more than the scissors.

I would say that Roxon is a classic young and agressive company. Victorinox, Lethermann, Gerber etc have their reputation but the Innovation is at the moment with Roxon. The Roxon flex is a upcoming multi tool that is like lego, you configurate the tools yourself. They have 30 tools at the moment, tendecy rising, witch are freelly interchangeble. This is the only company that has such a system and that I know of.
@AboutThings_byTarif4 ай бұрын
Spot on analysis. I just watched Max Lvl EDC's guide on the Flex. Great tool and a great video. I don't think major brands should get to sit on their laurels and watch other companies do great work. I think Leatherman tried something with the Free system but that's not enough and the Arc's pricing is a crime if that's the cost of innovation. I think Victorinox should be ashamed honestly. I don't think they're likely to go the way of Nokia but there are many lessons to be learned from other industries. Hope they wake up.

The screwdriver on the Super Tinker is almost brilliant. But I really hate the location of it. Having said that, I'd still rather have it over a corkscrew. I think corkscrews ruin a lot of multitools for me. They make handles less comfortable. And I don't think I have ever had an unexpected bottle of corked wine that needed opening immediately when I wasn't in range of a kitchen.
@AboutThings_byTarif4 ай бұрын
The driver itself is great. And I like the leverage. But it's just so awkward to use and completely useless in tight situations. I've used a SAK corkscrew once in my life. I 100% prefer having the driver hence my choice of Super Tinker as my daily carry.

@@AboutThings_byTarif I'll probably never be able to replace the Nail Clip 580. It has absolutely no right to be as useful as it is. I would consider replacing a finger with it if I could do that and and still have it be detachable. Alox SAKs are just beautiful and are lovely to carry. My Grandad carried a thoroughly weathered one for at least as long as he was alive. And seeing he always have it handy when he needed to cut or tighten something is probably part of the reason I've always felt like I needed to keep some tools nearby. I'd really love Victorinox to come up with something that feels like an Alox but has all of the function of a KS2E. That's the dream.

Regarding the screwdriver comparison. You can't compare a perpendicular with an inline one. Victorinox has the same model with an inline screwdriver. So it's unfair to disadvantage the Victorinox based on that. Unless you want to make a very precise comparison between these 2 specific models… but I don't think that's useful (at least for that kind of objects). PS: That said, you're still doing great videos, that's just details for improvement 😉

@AboutThings_byTarif4 ай бұрын
First off thanks for the disclaimer at the end :-) You've supported this since the beginning so any and all comments are welcome! I'm comparing what you'd typically find on a SAK at this price point and thinking about the main question, which tool would I rather carry in my pocket everyday. In this case I'd rather have an inline screwdriver than a perpendicular one. There are some applications where I would wish for the Victorinox one I know, but in day to day uses (and I've used one actual recent example) I'd rather have the Roxon one. As for the comparison, I am sharing an actual choice that I have between two comparable tools that I own (versus going out and buying a set of tools specifically for a comparison). It's a real decision that I think can be related to someone thinking of buying or changing a tool they have. I believe there's some usefulness to that. These are videos that I do find useful myself but I can imaging them not being useful to others as well.

I also have another SAK with an inline driver that's actually better than Roxon. But that's a $140 tool. Most cheap SAKs have a perpendicular driver as far as I know.

@AboutThings_byTarif True, I have the Super Tinker as well, but is it possible you could've used the can opener end for the door screw? From what I've heard, it's a flat that works for #2 Phillips and possibly smaller screws.

You make me nervous when you open those knifes with them shaky hands 😂

Hahahaha. You get used to it. The shaking is worse on camera than it is in reality.

You can't make negative comments about the only true Swiss Army knife dude. It's blasfemy.
@AboutThings_byTarif4 ай бұрын
Lol. I know. But technically I didn't make negative comments on SAK, I merely made positive comments on a competitor 🙂 In all seriousness though, the default multitool had been the Swiss army knife for decades. They're not innovating much for decades as well. There are companies out there that are doing interesting work. I love Victorinox and so it matters to me that they get their innovative act together.

Check out Jon Gadget's video on innovation in Victorinox. After it their CEO invited him for a visit.

🤔 Are that kind of comparisons really useful? Or is there a better way? (This is not about you in particular but I'll use "you" in a generic sense as "the person who's doing the comparison", same with "me" = "the viewer") You present the facts and a quick analysis then you share a your point of view according to your preferences and use case(s), and finally you give points (based on you). On my side: The facts are the facts (unless they are false). I can understand your analysis based on the facts. But for your preferences and use cases, it can match mine completely, partially or not at all. So, if I'm "smart", I can see beyond what you say and get something valuable for me out of your comparison even if we don't agree or match on preferences & use cases. If I'm "dumb", I take your conclusions while in fact my use cases are completely different or I reject your conclusions while in fact it's just a matter of preferences. That's why I think that it's better to stay neutral, more focused on facts, and talk about the different use cases (and preferences). Meaning, you don't provide any answer, you simply guide the viewer through a thinking process and lead them to their own conclusion. What do you think? 🤔 But… is it easy to do? Or at least feasible for an unknown and potentially very wide audience?

This a very relevant discussion and something that's not necessarily that easy to figure out when trying to make content. For me, the only thing I bring to the table is my experience and my point of view. There are hundreds of reviewers out there who have already made detailed reviews of the products I'm talking about. The best I can do is to walk you through my experience, share my commentary, and yes to sometimes reach a certain conclusion. In the case of today's video, I'm sharing a real decision about my actual EDC and wanted to share with people how I went about making that assessment. I don't see it as smart or dumb, I see it as someone who has seen, held, and ideally used a tool and someone who's still considering it. Two, there's value in sharing and discussing products in my opinion and brands see and follow and that's a net good for everyone involved. I understand the value of neutral presentation, but you only need to see one neutral review and you got all the info. It's a conscious decision for me to be more personal even if that narrows down my audience. I'm a viewer first and foremost, and as a viewer I gravitate to creators with a point of view that I even disagree with sometimes but at least I know it's real and not just a review mill churning out generic info about hundreds of products. I ironically watch those too by the way :-) I have a review of an uber popular bag that I hated. My review was all about how I hated that bag. To me that makes me more useful to a smaller group of people who would care about the things I hated. I didn't even go through all the details of the bag because I don't assume that I'm the only or the first video prospective buyers watch, the only thing I bring to the table is my own experience and point of view.

Ugly is subjective. But it certainly doesn't look or feel cheaply made to me.
