I'm originally from Crestview but I live in the Tampa Bay area now so I only get to make it home once or twice a year for the holidays. We visited the store when y'all first opened and another time a few years after that, always a great experience. You channel started popping up for me and I was so glad to see y'all thriving! I'm hoping to make it over again this fall to see what I can score for my vintage collection. Congrats on all your success!

Will never understand taking filthy items in for trade. It's even more degen than taking in stuff without a case. 1. It's like do they not want the maximum from a trade? & 2. Do they really have no shame in letting other people know how disgusting their living space has to be?

As these systems and carts age they will need more surgical pro care in a way. Not that your methods are wrong, just something to keep in mind. The stuff from the 70s and 80s is already falling apart. It's all going geriatric grandpa style. The systems that had the most cost cutting will be the first to go. I've collected a few old computers from work over the years and have noticed this. I've also noticed this with media like floppies for example. The quality of the materials and the equipment used to make them really helped with the longevity of them. Once the cost cutting came into play, the life expectancy drops. With carts I'm starting to be concerned of the traces and contacts lifting off the boards. With any valuable carts that need a cleaning use your phones camera to zoom in and inspect. I like to do this when I inspect the student laptops for damage at where I work. You will see the corrosion and cust so much better and the spots where the board is damaged. It's been a few years since I looked over my systems now so the inspection is over due. Luckly so far nothing is dying. But I did a cleaning of my Trinitron 6 months and had a scare when it wouldn't power on. Since you run a shop you could network with some technicians that could be a service in the future to do some repairs, but I'm not sure if the return in the investment could be worth it. Maybe the education could be enough. I'm subbed and I'll check out your older content. 👍

We will show some of our other more in depth repairs in the future, this was just standard cleaning procedure. We go to great lengths to preserve everything! The phone camera is a great trick in a pitch but we have digital microscopes for the real tiny stuff.
@shawngoral3987
@shawngoral3987 Ай бұрын
@@RadJunk I was just thinking you could capture B roll as the more involved interesting repairs come in as I had your last podcast a month ago running. I know now that Joe has the equipment to repair and do maintenance. Awesome! "Preservation awareness focus" as time goes on. Seems like something that is on everyones mind in the gaming community. We want to keep the treasure horde from disappearing. 🐲🤣 I've lightened up on that over the years. You guys sound busy! A 3 year old and 2 businesses, wow! You two look great and still have time to be young and live life. Don't loose that. I have 3 kids and know what it's like to be busy. They are older than your little one, 7, 9, and 11. Being in IT had gave me access to the older laptops that had no $ value to my employer and I passed them on the the kid. Lots of Roblox and Minecraft. I've grabbed a few retro computers from work that are precious, but I accept that one day they will cease to function. I did pickup consoles before prices went up. It was so easy when people would just dump them for almost free. Boxed copy of Mario Tennis 64 for $5, $20 Wii system and a Sega Saturn with a dozen games for $40 for example. That is in 🇨🇦💰. I also picked up a first model Sega Genesis with games, extra controllers in the box with Altered Beast a few years before 2020, $80. My 9 year old daughter Sam and I play TMNT on the old tube when she's not wanting to do obbies in Roblox. My oldest played alot of N64 and my youngest plays Switch, Wii, and Wii U. But the focus has moved to Roblox, PC, and, VR because that is where their friends are.

I hate that collectors make these prices go up so high. There are games I'd like to play that I never got to when I was younger but they're still so expensive, sometimes even more than they were new. Even broken ones! With anything else you'd see things get cheaper when they're outdated.

I always have a decon process when buying any used games, blu-rays etc. For the plastic cases I use 'Mr Sheen' multi-surface polish + a couple of yellow dusters, one for cleaning then 2nd one for the buffing/polish stage. It's surprising how a crusty, battered case can often clean up really nicely. Obviously with card slipcovers, paper sleeves etc. you have to be more careful, any liquid to a minimum and making sure to leave no trace of it. For cigarette smoke smell, you can sometimes cover it by wiping a little scented fabric softener on/in the case and a tiny amount on the paper covers. But occasionally they are just too far gone. I remember a white DVD sleeve partially exposed from plastic, stained dark yellow. Had to throw out the case & cover, as the smell was so strong.

I get a bunch of old stuff on a regular basis (I run a site about games, so readers sometimes send things to me), and some of it is much, MUCH worse than this. I remember a Mega Drive III (Genesis II in US) that looked like it had been abandoned under the sun and rain, and when I opened it up, it had a lot of DIRT, like a reddish soil inside. It could have a plant if it wasn't dry and dark. I guess the guy was living where dust storms were common, maybe Mars. No ideia how that crap ended up inside the console. And some cartridges look beyond cleaning until I brush the contacts with fine sandpaper. Most of them come back from the dead.
