Before my grandmother died she gave me a cookie tin that had crochet swatches of patterns for lace edgings and motifs that an older lady gave her. This was how they used to share patterns with those who couldn’t read pattern directions. I framed them and hung them on the wall

Hearing you ponder as you decipher these patterns is so reassuring. Its not just me! I think this would make a sweet cushion cover front, with the casing made of a soft dove grey or even lilac for a more floral look, imagination being the only limit.😊

I love your interpretations of these patterns. These patterns didn't have many instructions because EVERY young lady was taught the basics of crochet, knitting, beading and netting because you made your home decorations, they were not bought! The only change I would make would be to make the triples (doubles) in the chain spaces rather than the actual chains. This would be lovely in #10, #5 or #3 cotton. Would make lovely antimacassars for the backs of your chairs!! Please keep going with this series. These are a ture "blast from the past".

I freaking love this series! My mom has a bunch of these doilies, made in the same/extremely similar pattern. My great grandma made them so I guess they were made sometime between 1920 and the 1950s or 60s. Seeing your intricate little mandala swatch next to it, it made me wonder how very recent these more complex pattens are. And also just how long they were using the kind of patterns from your book.

Thank you so much :) , yes I know , these are UK antique Patterns , the st terms are different from US terms, and in the UK a Treble is a US double and so on, in fact they dont use the words " Single Crochet" , they call it a double crochet , I have been studying antique and vintage crochet from the US and UK for a while , and I have been crochet for over 20 years :) ... I really appreciate your feedback though

Following the pattern, for R7 mine worked out so that for the skip 3, I skipped the last st, the sc, and the first st of the next set of chains, it worked out perfectly. It just made more sense as there are 10 ch's and we're only working in 8 of them, so leaving the 1st and the last st empty plus the sc (the 3 skipped chains), it worked out more evenly and balanced. I also went off the rails on R10 and put all 3 sc's in the same st, lol. Turns out R11 ended up a tiny bit ruffled (which was a pleasant surprise that I loved) due to the extra ch6 spaces doing it this way created. I also left off R12 because I felt it was finished. That R12 made yours look too utilitarian and not delicate, I'm glad you opted to take it off. I can only imagine what this one would look like using the thinner #10 thread and corresponding hook. Something I'm not even considering doing cuz all these patterns using that thread/hook is killing my hands, lolol! Another great job and looking forward to the next one I can swear a whole lot at, LOLOL!

I LOVE that you used worsted weight yarn for this! I could see making more of them (perhaps in different colors?) and turning them into a 'lacy' Afghan or bedspread! That size, it wouldn't take a lot of them to make a coverlet for bed! I would leave off that last filet round, myself... I think the flower motif!!!
