You have the cleanest boat shop I have ever seen. Makes mine look so dirty. Love the skipper 20, I have a 1983 Montego 20 and I love it. It’s a 2300 lb boat and sails Lake Michigan beautifully. I’m currently building a 20 ft Paul Gartside designed cutter. I sail out of Holland and love the Great Lakes. Sailing is therapeutic, not a hurry and get there activity. If you have never sailed and like to go boating, I strongly suggest finding someone to sail with. I’m always happy to take people out. ❤

Welcome Aboard Randall! I hope you subscribe 😁 what a great little boat! Have you ever considered sailing your boat across Lake Michigan for some big water fun? I was thinking this might be a great challenge for the Skipper 20 once restored. And I’ve often thought someday there should be a Small Sailboat Adventure Challenge in the Great Lakes. Just like Water Tribe in a Florida.

Please keep the boat a sail boat,that is if you are a sailor. Many people are not. And so sailing is slowly becoming a thing of the past. It is not how fast you are, or how you need to get to your destination asap. It's the love of learning new things and adventure. You also learn patience. Whatever you do give olive oil love. All the best greg.

The wife doesn't appreciate that under sail is a journey experience, much like train travel, hiking, exclusions are high-speed trains. You don't go well, go from A to B, in a set time frame. It's a travel that will unfold at the universe's pleasure, not yours. And the pleasure lies there, even if, hours overdue. Sailing is true freedom.

Great little boat. My advice is to keep it as a sailboat no matter what you decide. Adding the pilothouse top or hard dodger would be sweet, especially if you connected a bimini with side curtains for a full cockpit coverage. I can think of many great little adventure with a boat like that in New England where we sail our boat.
@motorcityboatwerks Жыл бұрын
Sounds great! Thank you for your vote
@ĶČXXĻ-ĀxÐ Жыл бұрын
@@motorcityboatwerksI vote on keeping her as a sailboat also. Maybe a hard dodger depending upon where and how you plan to sail her. Also think about a breakdown tent type enclosure for the cockpit for staying overnight at anchor or close to shore on lakes or lake island camp spots. She has an abundance of character, it would be a shame to lose it. Especially if adding height and weight that would make her tender on the water. *Second idea as an addendum to my vote: Go big! Start a new business venture! Make a complete mold of her, both top and bottom shells. Then bring her model back to the market as a trailer sailor/ pocket cruiser. Sell completely finished boats. In addition to offering just the bare hulls with the topsides, (decks, cockpit, and cabin top.) Basically all molded In features that would allow the purchasers to then finish themselves to a standard and budget they can afford. Next step, achieve success. Now talk to James Baldwin (Atom Voyager), about bringing a new design to the market. With a small sailboat similar and comparable to the ones he refits. Incorporating all of his design ideas, innovations, and refit improvements. Which results in a tremendously capable blue water, adventure sailboat. That is comfortable,and easy to sail single-handed. Then disrupt the market by bringing an attainable, affordable, and capable sailboat. One that does not price out the majority of the market. Those ooking to find an affordable and safe new boat to go cruising. However far or close that may be. So that’s my vote. Do all of the above or something like that. Lol 😂

What a fabulous little boat. I would love that project. I did a Victory 18 that had the hull pierced on both sides of the bow. It was pulled out of the water on a makeshift trailer. It was filled with water when recovered. The trailer supports up front pierced the hull as it settled on the trailer. Sailed it several times after i repaired it. The problem was launching and retrieving. It required a twenty foot chain between the trailer hitch and the trailer in order to get it far enough down the ramp so it could float.

I used to have a English built 17 ft LEISURE double bilge keel sloop....it was massively fibreglass built with good sitting headroom. In the earlier boats manufactured of fibreglass, they were overbuilt because it was a new product and they were built strong. I was told that my model crossed the Atlantic single-handedly by a German sailor. Due to the lack of head room in your boat, I could see building it up with a pilot house. I wouldn’t like to live in the cabin overnight, crouched down.....but that’s only me...otherwise, she has beautiful lines....cheers🍷🇨🇦

Love seeing old boats brought back to life... My "Exwife" found a better "Deal" or another "D" word. So I Located a 1969 Mako 19' (same year I hatched...)We are same age. I pulled the cap and removed all the saturated floatation foam, Monster re-built the rotten Transom, 2-1/2" thick, and beefing up the stringers. A few years into the project,. I'm getting back to working on it. I shattered both bones in ankle so a set back for more than a year. My plans are too much to even start to describe but it's a Full Resto. But twin outboards is the 1st. on the agenda. I have twin 60 gallon fuel tanks that I am fitting under the floor and adding a few extra stringers to corral the tanks. I have float tested it with the mock up of the weights listed, but it will be a 1-2 people boat rather than 4-6 as original. Also, in the recent year I obtained a saw mill, So I'm kicking around milling Eastern Red Cedar from my property that has died and still standing for the rest of the project. Another 1 of a kind build from 50+ year old boat. Will enjoy following your Build. It's your ball of wax... make the candle that "YOU" want. Cheers.

Definitely a protected water boat. That foam is likely there to limit the amount of water that can flood up through the motor well in certain sailing conditions. It is a known problem for that hull design. The fiberglass around the keel is also thin and failures from water freezing are out there on the forums. Curious to see what you think once you really get into it.

You may be right in several points. But I always marvel at the keyboard commandos who repeat opinions from Internet forums. This has happened with my Alberg 30, the Mustang 22, the Albin 27 pocket trawler. Misinformation and vox populi….

I sailed around the world on a 43ft sailboat. We spent a year in St Augustine Florida getting ready to leave. There was a boat that came into the marina one day called little boat. It was an old wooden 20 something foot sailboat that looked like it was sinking just sitting still. It had barely any freeboard (distance from deck to the water line). It was tiny inside. We later saw them in New Zealand and i have no idea how they actually made it there in that boat. So you could cross oceans in almost anything but i wouldn't recommend crossing oceans in a 20ft boat. We encountered a massive storm on our way from Bermuda to Nova Scotia Canada. 30+ foot waves and over 55knots of wind for 3 days while sailing over the Grand Banks. The waves were breaking over the stern constantly and we were survival mode with a tiny storm jib up and surfing waves up to 14knots and then smashing into the back of the next wave making the boat want to broach. I cannot imagine getting through that in a 20ft boat.

I'd vote for a pilot house and keep it sail-able. Thats the kind of boat a person could sail solo and bop around from port to port for very little money. Would love to take it down to the keys.

I just subscribed so I could follow your project. My vote is to leave it original. This also means get rid of the swim ladder. No "character". Looking forward to your videos.
@motorcityboatwerks Жыл бұрын
If you get rid of the swim ladder how do you get back in the boat when you fall over board or go skinny dipping?
@time.5316 Жыл бұрын
@@motorcityboatwerks I think that the person that sails that kind of a boat isn't interested in skinny dipping. That's why I recommended that. For falling overboard, if single-handed, you're supposed to be trailing a safety line. The swim ladder will be long gone (and useless) before you realize what happened.

Raise the whole cabin roof by 8 inches, put in some forward facing portholes. Put in a mini galley, with small gimballed stove, fold out table and 2 good berths. Extend the engine compartment, put in a small diesel with generator and prop-shaft. Make an awning for the cockpit from 2 solar panels. Put in navigation systems and sounder, a shower, head and water-maker. Then actually cross an ocean as the title suggests it might.
@motorcityboatwerks Жыл бұрын
I think if I was going to cross oceans, I’d stick with a sailboat. But your description of the micro trawler idea is interesting 😁
@jonkwin9620 Жыл бұрын
I would still keep the sails, as well as have a little diesel engine. If you had furlers on jib and main sails it would be a great one man off shore cruiser@@motorcityboatwerks

If rowboats have crossed vast ocean expanses, then there is no reason the Skipper 20 can't.

I like the pocket trawler ides but it might make docking very difficult when it comes to the boat handling. I'm thinking about a pilothpuse build on a J/24 of all things. It's wide and fast and cheap. Perfect for that, imo.

@motorcityboatwerks Thank you, I saw it after I posted. Another thing I was thinking about, the Compac 23 Pilothouse looks like they literally just cut the cabin house on a regular Compac 23 and used the piece they cut out as the hardtop for the pilothouse. It just has me thinking about easy solutions and being able to keep the OEM looking sliding hatch. It seems that would be pretty easy on certain applications.

Check out my video on building the Compac 16 pilothouse conversion. That’s exactly one of the steps in my build. Not quite as simple as you think but it is the top sliding hatch repurposed. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iIHcpGyKgcuqp9Esi=cFGTZCymA9Wo2sSY

Permission to come aboard sir? New to your channel. I think I would shy away from a trawler build. The over riding factor being center of gravity. But the pilot house concept turned my head, very tasty possibilities there. Nice little boat!

Robin Lee Graham sailed around the world in his 24ft sail boat 'Dove' back in the 70's. With lots of skill and even more good luck a person could sail a fitted cargo container across an ocean. Having been to sea many times, that person would not be me. Lol

I would keep the boat original, the cabin is a cuddly cabin and designed for sleeping, not lounging in. I had a S.F. T.I Sloop that had a similar again and it was nice and cozy to sleep in. Otherwise, as a day sailer you are going to spend your time out in the cockpit, and the odd weekend aboard. A boom ten could be rigged for days of light rain, when at anchor. Cheers

First I've seen one of these and instantly fell in love with them, like a mini version of my Hans Christian...please for the love of god don't bastardize it and kill the lines with a pilot house or worse.

Pilothouse conversions if done properly are not dis-pleasing to the eye. The problem lies in the fact that most pilothouse conversions are hideously ugly. We will be discussing this further….
