The HiWatt tone stack is an unusual and complex one. The mid dip can't be eliminated as on a Marshall, but it is more versatile. Leave the Bass at ~5.5. Try turning the Treble down to 1, and listen to the upper-mid peak shift from 5~2kHz by adjusting the Middle from 4-10. Then leave the Middle between there somewhere and hear the upper-mid to high balance completely change while adjusting the Treble from 0-2. It's very scooped otherwise. I'd try using it with those kinds of settings and balance the channels levels, increase the Presence and maybe reduce the Bass just a bit as needed.

I like how this pedal can be set up in such a way it sounds like it'll blow if you crank it up even more. Hendrix and friends would have loved that back in the day. Would have saved them a lot of amps. 😅

Great demo as always Pete! This pedal encapsulates one of my favourite hard rock pedal combos. I love to use a 4 knob Colorsound Overdriver circuit into a really nice preamp pedal. Is it a FET based preamp? My own setup which would be similar would be running the Overdriver into a Catalinbread RAH but I really love it into just about all of the FET preamp pedals I have. The two band EQ on the Overdriver means you can take it from a treble boost kind of thing to really fat and fuzzy. Then with the gain/level you can go from a mild bit of overdrive to that wonderful, saggy, blooming fuzz like thing that's so awesome. You can get something almost like the type of distortion you get in early tweed or brownface or like 'budget' amps like Supro and Magnatone where you crank them up and they collapse into a nearly square wave distortion. You run the Overdriver then into something high headroom like a Hi-Watt and you've instantly got 70-80s hard rock metal tone for days. Love it!

Adding that Colorsound overdrive to the pedal is a masterstroke imo. Hiwatt drive sounds are pretty hard to duplicate, and aren't as smooth and sustaining as in other amps. I don't understand the engineering aspect of it, but the amps have such high headroom that you have to really fckn crank them to get a really good sounding drive, but that makes the amp super loud and hard to tame in a live situation for playing clubs etc. I used a Hiwatt 50 in my old band (late 70's- mid 80's) and sound guys ALWAYS told me to turn down to the point to where the amp was rarely in its sweet spot. So I was forced to use pedals for drive, which worked well. Incorporating the Colorsound pedal into this pedal makes total sense to me, and it sounds great too!

Ive always thought that Hiwatts have no timbre signature... meaning there is no harmonic foldover in a particular area of the spectrum. The drive harmonics are evenly spread and not loaded up in say the low mids like an Orange. Or, the high mids on a Marshall. This is different than eq. That being said, it highlights the timbre of the guitar. Hiwatts sound like a PA or HiFI tube stereo .

Question, just watched your reviews on the boss 200's. I am looking for something that will give me more versatility so that I don't have to go and buy 2 more guitars or another amp. I want to get one of these pedals so that I can play more songs (I cover a lot of different worship songs) without compromising too much tone/high end or sounding digital like the line 6 effects. I have a vox ac handwired blue celestion with tele and 3 od's- the jhs 808/moonshine, jhs angry charlie, and a clean 3 knob booster/cleanup MY QUESTION- with this in context ^ , should I get the boss 200eq, the boss 200od, or the boss 200 ir? I was thinking eq because i already have 3 overdrives, but then i saw the ir 200... im also not sure if eq is enough to manipulate the drive on the OD's or if I need a 200 od or ir for that.

Finally something different. The pedal world is full of Plexi, Vox AC30 and Fender Deluxe Reverb '65 simulation pedals. Now this combination of 2 Hiwatt Amps and the Colorsound Power Boost is awesome! How I wish someone would create a pedal that emulates the Orange sound. Is there anything like that out there? Does somebody have any recommendations? Thanks a lot in advance!

I wanna hear how it sounds played with a 60s sg special with p90s. Also, how well does it clean up when you roll off the volume? This pedal seems to try and emulate pete townhends set during the late 60s and early 70s. In the late 60s he played p90 sgs and, if im not mistaken, could go from clean to diety by adjusting the volume/pickup selection on his guitar. This can be heard on the live at leeds album. Can you do the same with thia pedal?

I wish this pedal was out several years ago. I’m one of those Gilmour tone nerds, and this thing seems to be almost a “Wish You Were Here” in a box pedal. I have two part for part clones, one of the Catlinbread WIIO and one of the ColorSound PowerBoost, which do a great job of getting the tones of Gilmour’s rig. But this thing has the cool options (such as the linked Hiwatt, which I think is how Gilmour had his amp wired internally), and the 9 and 18 volt options on the PowerBoost. What really sells me though is the effects loop, something that is missing from other “Gilmour in a Box” pedals, like the Keeley Darkside (a great pedal on its own as well). Having the option of throwing a phaser/univibe/flanger/chorus in the loop is great, but you can also throw a Fuzz Face or Big Muff in there as well (Gilmour went back and forth with his placement of the PowerBoost and the Fuzz Face, and later the Muff, but he like to stack gain pedals and compressors). Again, I wish this was around about 5 years ago, before I built my board to get those tones.

Great demo Pete. I got an email from Sinvertek. Wu has a new MGAT-1 Golden Era pedal. Do you think you’ll be demo-ing it? He’s claiming to 99% authenticity on the sound now. I have the N5 MGAT-1 and love it but just bought a Lion 68 two days before I got the email about the pre-order for the MGAT-1 Golden Era so I can’t pre-order. Lion 68 is a new favorite though. They’ve done it with that pedal. It’s just like my plexi. Running mine into SS power pushing my cabs and can’t really tell the difference to real Plexi.

And the moral of this story is: buy a DR103. 🤠 The CTC pedal sounds pretty damn good but there's no substitute for the real thing (unless you have to carry it and a couple of 4x12s around). And if you wouldn't mind, tell me more about that explorer.....
