You should really reach out to Cogg Hill Farms. Jason, Brooke and Mary Carl know EVERYTHING about chickens and I mean EVERYTHING! They're selling their eggs like hotcakes. They used to raise meat chickens as well. They know all about the various breeds and who are the best layers. They have an amazing coop and their farm is so clean and organized. Very humane. Their chickens are beautiful and very docile.

You've discovered it! The best way to get any child to develop a new habit (Like Mr. Brown!) is to give even the tiniest lean toward that new habit--POSITIVE ATTENTION! Great work!!!!!! He even walks differently, and it is obvious that he is loving being the wingman.

@@ernieh3860 He caught it by the neck, which is very different from picking it up by the neck! Like a snake, you control the dangerous part first, the head!!! A goose has a serrated beak and hurts!!! IF you watch Jason on Cog Hill Farm, he also catches his goose (they had many geese) by the neck and you pick them up with your arm while holding that neck!! Don't just assume you know when you surely don't.

Yes, he is! I've noticed he's less argumentative when being asked to do things and seems to want to genuinely help more than he seemed to in the past. He's growing up a little, which can be good or bad but in this case it's great. :) Bringing him along as the wingman may be what has done it, but it might also be him watching how his oldest brother is struggling and it may be him making a conscious decision to be more helpful because he doesn't want Jonah hurt any more than he already is. I don't know for sure but that can be a motivator for younger siblings.

@@ernieh3860 YOU need to look again. The scene did NOT show him lift the darned goose at all! It showed him grab the goose by the neck, which IS the smart way to do it. Then it shows him reaching his OTHER HAND toward the goose. THEN it jumps to the NEXT scene, which is him putting the goose DOWN into the next enclosure.

Have raised chickens for 60 years. Currently my flock of 35 hens have been free ranging in the fields and woods. Layers are black jersey giants and auracanas. Predators leave them alone because they look like crows. They are also good Layers. The auracana are 3 to 4 years old. I have two Australian hens which are 6 years old and lay every day. Have already put up 1000 eggs for winter. If feed is hard to come by, I can feed the eggs back to the chickens and for dog food. Hens that have a dry leathery vent are nolonger laying.

Thanks for your honesty about the truths of homesteading!! It's REAL out here 🤣🤣 We got hawks after 2 years.....we were raising our chickens how you taught us in the mobile coop (eglu) and premier one net. A friend suggested criss crossing hay string across the top of the net like a spider web. That way ariel predators can't swoop. So far this has worked well. We just re string when we move the net.

My grandpa's crow repellent works. Secure a tall slender pole in the ground near the chickens. About 8 to 10 ft up that pole, use twine to suspend a dead crow. Crows will discover it, fly & swoop the area near the dead crow, cawing. After a day or two, they leave never to return. Leave the crow in place until nothing left of it. In my grandpa's home state, it was legal to kill things that killed your livestock.

That Tube Man is a great scarecrow and you can use it for advertising like Josiah suggested - that's a win win. You all sure use a lot of eggs. My husband and I used to get fresh eggs from a woman who free-ranged her chickens. They were the best! But we eat very few eggs anymore. I have a question. Is it true that if you wash eggs, you have to refrigerate them? Gideon is doing so much better helping with chores. Poor Jonah, hope to hear more about his hip surgery soon.

If you wash eggs you have to refrigerate them if you buy them from a farm locally you can just ask if they need to in the fridge or not. We usually let ours sit on the counter for a week or 2 before we'll put them in the fridge if we haven't given them to neighbors or family.

@JustinRhodes to keep track of the chickens and their age, simply buy a bunch of colored legbands. The 2023 chicks will all get one color of band. Write it down somewhere. The 2024 chicks will get a different color and so on. The older ones you have now can get a 3rd color and you will know that they can be processed or sold in the Fall of 2024. Do it now, before the new ones get as big as the old ones by the end of the Summer.

One 1-1,5 old chickens molt on head, older molt whole or at least wings and bottom, plus they are more light and slim/triangle shaped...older ones usually get heavier and square shaped. Today I'm going for young layers as my 2,5-3 year olds get soft shells even with a lot of calcium source.

your goose is small. I have an Emden goose, he is huge, and I have not had a single loss to predators. Emdens are not especially aggressive, so easy to be around, but they are very alert and their size keeps the hawks, crows, and smaller 4 legged predators away.

I find a fishing net with a telescoping handle works great for catching chickens.

My Egg quantities dropped off completely over winter, 6 x chickens that were 2 and 3 years old and I was getting 1 egg a day. 4 of the old girls became ill and I had to dispatch them, unfortunately two of them were the younger birds. I now have 2 x 3 year old chickens and 2 x 20 month chickens and I get 3 eggs per day on average.
